During the 1960s, a group called the South West African People’s Organization (SWAPO) began carrying out guerrilla -style raids, fighting against South Africa for independence. The violence increased, and in 1966, the United Nations finally stepped in to manage the situation. The first step the United Nations took was to end the South African mandate on South West Africa and to add the territory to the Non-Self-Governing Territories list. Then a number of UNmember countries—such as the United States,Britain,France,Canada, andWest Germany—began pressuring South Africa toagree tohelpSouthWestAfrica take steps toward self-determination. South Africa agreed to accept SWAPO as the official representatives of South West Africa and to begin negotiations with them.
