Safety at our Beaches is a ‘Shore’ Thing If you’re one of the one million people visiting the City’s beaches across the year, you can count on our Beach Services staff. The City has four full-time professional beach inspectors who keep watch on the City’s beaches seven days a week, year-round and up to 14 professional beach lifeguards that operate between October and the end of April. From July 2017 to June 2018, Beach Services’ staff performed 130 rescues and 11,532 preventative actions, where staff intervened on the sand or in the surf. In addition, volunteer surf life savers from the Scarboro and Trigg Island Surf Life Saving Clubs performed 110 rescues and 4,223 preventative actions during the same period. In total, this represents more than 35 per cent of all rescues around the state and close to 60 per cent of all preventative actions. During the peak summer period – November to the end of March – the City’s professional beach inspectors and beach lifeguards and volunteer surf lifesavers will patrol the City’s beaches daily from 6.00am to 6.00pm. Enjoy your time at the beach and please swim only between the red and yellow flags.
