Solid Waste

ENVIRONMENTAL  Through the City’s Rethink Waste Program, maintained 70% diversion of curbside waste through the organic waste and recyclable services;  Completed the Implementation of the Rethink Waste at Work Program to all City Facilities;  Sustained the City’s reduction in garbage tonnage by over 40% compared to our previous waste collection system;  Diverted over 59,000 metric tonnes of SOCIO-CULTURAL  Provided education across the City’s multicultural community on reducing contamination within the recyclables waste stream;  Completed a comprehensive review and rewrite of the City’s waste collection services bylaws, given the significant changes that have occurred since the implementation of the Rethink Waste Collection program for single-family households and Apartment Buildings;  Handled close to 17,300 service requests from our curbside customers; organic waste at curbside, far exceeding the initial forecast;

 Introduced the Surrey Apartment Organics Collection Program. This program provides for voluntary participation in weekly organic waste collection services at apartment buildings across the City;  Worked with Surrey’s customer base to reduce residual materials within the organic waste stream; and  Continued to experience a 23% reduction in carbon emissions associated with the use of Compressed Natural Gas waste collection vehicles.  The SurreyReuses.com material trading website received over 60,000 visits, achieved over 700 exchanges and diverted close to 24,000 kilograms of waste away from the landfill in 2015; and  Surrey’s Rethink Mobile App received over 6,600 downloads while our online widget received 97,600 views, 15,500 address searches and sent out over 5,000 active reminders.

FUTURE INITIATIVES

ECONOMIC  Biofuel Project - achieve “Substantial Completion” and commissioning of waste processing by December 2016; and

 Work with our customers to reduce contamination within the curbside recycling waste stream to below the 3% threshold as required by Multi Materials BC.
