Eat the colours of a everyday Brightly coloured fruits and vegetables are rich in a wide variety of antioxidants that have a host of health benefits. The body produces its own antioxidants, but some people can become deficient. Eat these foods every day to ensure that you are getting everything you need for optimum health and wellbeing.

Red & Pink

Yellow & Orange

The main antioxidants found in orange fruits and vegetables are carotenoids which are also found in leafy green vegetables; these are a precursor to vitamin A, which is essential for healthy skin, eyes and mucous membranes which line the urinary, digestive and respiratory tracts. Diets rich in beta-carotene which gives this food their orange colour have been linked with a reduced risk of certain cancers and heart disease and play a role in immunity, bone health and age-related dementia.

Almost all red fruit and vegetables contain lycopene, which reduces the risk of prostate cancer, and promotes colon health. Berries are rich in ellagic acid, which supports the immune system, and have antiviral and antibacterial

qualities; so they also contain anthocyanins, which can help slow down the degenerative processes of ageing, providing protection against a number of cancers and cardiovascular disease, as well as showing antiviral and antibacterial properties.

White

Green

The flavanoids found in red grapes known as resveratrol promote a healthy heart and circulatory system, while blueberries and Purple & Blue

Lutein, found in all dark green plant foods as well as yellow and orange fruits and vegetables, is important for healthy vision, and helps to prevent degeneration of the eyes, as well as the development of cataracts. Dark, leafy green vegetables are rich in carotenoids as well as zeaxanthin which may help to reduce the risk of certain types of cancer, such as breast and lung cancer, and may contribute to the prevention of heart disease and stroke. They also contain quercetin which can act as an anti-inflammatory.

Onions and garlic contain protective phytonutrients (plant nutrients) that can reduce the risk of cancer; these include quercetin and allicin, which are known to kill harmful bacteria and protect the capillaries. Mushrooms are high in antioxidant polyphenols, which are known to reduce the risk of heart disease, while cauliflower contains compounds such as glucosinolates and thiocyanates that can protect against heart disease, cancer, digestive disorders and obesity. Oats and flaxseed contain lignin, which is known to lower cholesterol, prevent kidney disease and balance hormones during menopause, while nuts

blackberries contain ellagic acid and catechins, which can help to prevent cancer. Rich in anthocyanins, purple and blue foods can also reduce the risk of cancer, improve the health of your urinary tract and encourage healthy memory and ageing. Blueberries, in particular, have been proven to reduce mental health decline including Alzheimer’s and protect against inflammation.

and seeds contain anti-inflammatory compounds.

Home Lifestyle Central Coast

Editor’s Note... Welcome to the Spring edition of Central Coast Home & Lifestyle Magazine. For many of us, each new season marks a chance for renewal, and spring is no exception. We want our magazine to be entertaining and informative, but above all useful. Inside this issue you will find a great mixture of different topics for local readers which are relevant to the whole family and visitors to the Central Coast. Inspiring you to focus on healthy lifestyles to preserve our independence as we grow old, making improvements to make each and every room of your home a special space where you look forward to spending your time, exposing places to stay and places to go, to enjoy tasty food with attractive and comfortable surrounds and caring for our beloved pets, and much more. There is so much sadness and tragedy in our world and I often reflect on how good it feels to help others in need and expect nothing in return. Whenever possible I try and show people that they are not alone and someone cares by doing something for them that will help them, and make a difference to their day or lives. Some people make this their full time commitment in life, by offering their services to those in need, and they do not get paid for their time nor expect to. They are rewarded by the joy and fulfilment others feel from their good deeds. Our Rotary Groups are just one of many organisations that are giving their time and love to people less fortunate than them, that have met with misfortune and despair in their lives. What good people they are, those who show they care about others and put themselves last, and I hope that they are shown the same compassion in return if they ever need support. Be sure to read about their story on page 45 about some of the great accomplishments they have achieved. A special congratulations, to our two lucky winners of the Duoetto MK2 Water Heaters. Rosanne Poole of Kincumber and Phil Reynolds of Bensville, and thank you to all of our readers who entered the competition. I hope you enjoy our Spring issue. Stay safe and happy reading...

Warm Regards,

Rock fishing safety tips Rock fishing is one of the most dangerous sports in Australia DO NOT rock fish when the conditions are dangerous. Stay alert to the weather conditions. Check the weather and the tide conditions before you leave home and monitor them while you’re out fishing. • Never turn your back on the ocean. • High tides can cover your rock fishing spot with water. Rising tides and high tides make waves break onto rock fishing locations. You might get trapped or swept off your rock fishing spot by a high tide. • Large seas or swell waves can be hazardous. • Strong winds can create hazardous waves or push you off wet, slippery rocks. •If you are fishing in an exposed area during rough seas, find a calmer spot.•Monitor the weather and tidal conditions while you’re out fishing and be alert to any changes. • Check for severe weather warnings. Check the Central Coast waters forecast on the Bureau of Meteorology website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 218. •Always watch the waves. •Always wear a lifejacket. •Wear light clothing and appropriate footwear. •Never fish alone. •If you need help, call Triple Zero (000) Police.

There are many benefits to planting hedges A striking, well-manicured yard helps to frame the exterior of your home. An added benefit of planting shrubs and hedges is that they can help define or shape a property. They offer privacy, shade, and noise reduction by providing shelter around a house and garden, tender plants are protected from damaging winds and they will grow twice as fast. Hedges and shrubs can add height and create unique perspectives and dimensions for a property, creating interesting focal points, accents and backdrops. Additionally, they can be trimmed to specific shapes for added beauty and curb appeal. Strategically planted hedges and shrubs can help disguise problem areas of property or hide secure areas of the property. One of the best benefits of shrubs and hedges is that they can often be very low maintenance. Many varieties are easy to maintain and keep healthy, with little pruning or trimming needed throughout the year. There are also a wide variety of shrubs and hedges to choose from, depending on owner preferences regarding leaf size, future growth patterns, shapes, flowering options, and colours. In addition, most shrubs and hedges are evergreen so the property owner can enjoy lush green colour throughout the seasons. Tasty Salmon and Spinach parcel

Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 220°C, fan 200°C. Put the salmon on a sheet of baking paper. Season, drizzle over 1 tbsp oil and wrap to seal. Top with the fish and drizzle with a little lemon juice. 4. Fold the unfilled side of pastry over the fish and seal the edges. Crimp the edges and prick the top with a fork. Shape fish from the reserved pastry and stick on top. Brush with egg, then bake for 20-25 mins. Serve with the remaining spinach and lemon wedges.

Planning on installing your own floating floor? by Guy Thornycroft

W hy not! This article will highlight the problems that can occur and what to do to avoid them. “Proper Preparation” will save you time and money. Installing your own floor is both physically and time consuming, so ensure you are up to it with enough time in hand to complete the work. Patience pays! Once old floor coverings have been removed check the levelness of the subfloor. You may have concrete or timber, but place a 2m (+) long level in different places and see how much gap you see between it and the sub-floor. Anything gap more than 3mm deep over a 3m span will need the high points taken off or the valley filled with levelling compound. (Tip: use a marker pen as you go to remind you

Consider if you need an acoustic underlay to reduce noise transfer to rooms below. There are some excellent u-tube videos on installing floors and they are worth watching for tips and short cuts. Most floors ‘click’ together so avoid excessive bashing that will damage the locking mechanism. Your local flooring specialist will give you good advice and can supply the right tools to make the job easier. However good you are, there is always move to learn, so ask! where the high and low areas are) All floating floors need an expansion gap between the floor and any vertical surface like a wall. Consider what skirting or scotia you want to cover that gap. If taking off the existing skirting to re-fit after the floor is laid, number the bits as they come off for easier refitting. Consider what trims you need before starting as they may need base tracks installed before you lay the floor. Every flooring type has advantages and disadvantages. Pick one that matches your lifestyle or the purpose of the room. Your best friend does not need to like it, you do. Floating floors need an underlay that helps remove irregularities (so your new floor lies flat and firm) and provides a water barrier.

As you drift off to sleep, your body begins healing damaged cells, boosting your immune system, recovering from the day’s activities, recharging your heart and cardiovascular system for the next day. Many of us are not getting the quality 7 to 8 hours sleep our body needs to perform these func- tions. If your body doesn’t get a chance to re- charge you will be feeling drowsy or moody, struggling to take in new information, re- member things, make decisions and crave unhealthy foods. If this happens regularly, you can imagine the strain it would place on your nervous system, body and overall health. If you’re not sleeping well or not feeling your best, consult your doctor. During the night, our bodies cycle through two recurring phases of sleep: REM (rapid eye movement) and NREM (non-rapid eye move- ment). Both phases are important for differ- ent functions in our bodies. A hormone that is essential for growth and development is only released in the last stage of NREM sleep. If the REM and NREM cycles are interrupted multiple times at night then we miss out on vital body processes, which can affect our health and well-being. THE EXPERT

By Geoff Garlinge

Q: Just wondering what is the best natural remedy for cold sores? They’re taking ages to go away using the chemical stuff I’ve been recommended. It’s not only painful, but extremely embarrassing and stressful. Please help. A: The indisputable answer is Propolis, an aromatic resin harvested by honeybees. Boasting an impressive array of benefits including anti-bacterial, anti-septic, anti- viral, anti-microbial, plus immune boosting properties along with powerful bio-flavonoids & a host of Vitamins & Minerals, amino acids and much more...Propolis is quite possibly the most versatilte Natural medicine there is. And it works to treat & control herpes type 1 & 2. In fact, it’s used extensively by many patients in the battle against cancer to effectively strengthen & support the immune system, while mitigating side-effects of conventional therapies such as chemo & radiation... delivering dynamic results. In your case, if your immune system is strong & your lifestyle is balanced, the cold sores won’t be happening. They are a sign your body is basically not coping with the stresses of everyday life. When Propolis tincture is applied topically during an outbreak, cold sores rapidly disappear, as do mouth ulcers. Cuts or abrasions should be quickly coated with Propolis to form a protective seal & stimulate wound healing. Fungal infections such as Candida Albicans, as well as many other conditions associated with bacterial invasion also respond well to Propolis. For prevention which is always the wisest way to go, capsules or tablets are the preferred options... IF theycontainastandardisedextract from a trusted reputable source. Integrity is absolutely crucial, so beware of cheap brands offering higher dosages that in reality don’t equate to the same potency, nor will supply greater or even close to equal effectiveness. After 30+ years working with my good friend & colleague Dr George Kowalski, I can unequivocally guarantee Nature’s Goodness Propolis is the genuine article that you can trust in the midst of an array of seemingly more potent yet substandard alternatives. Put simply it works, and by implementing a daily morning & night oral regimen that includes additional Vitamin C (Sodium Ascorbate), it facilitates a super immune boost. So Propolis is an integral part of your solution & a must have for every medicine cabinet.

Q: Having never been a winter person, whenever I’m not working I fall for the trap of snuggling up with a bunch of DVDs and food I shouldn’t really be eating, that I really know just stacks on the weight and brings me undone. This wreaks absolute havoc with my skin too. To make things worse, I’ve battled acne since I was a teenager and other skin problems that are definitely affected by what I eat. So are my bowels which are all over the shop too. I’m aware you need to know about this and when my motions aren’t loose & watery, I experience bouts of constipation where I don’t actually go at all for up to 2 full days in a row. This makes me feel more sluggish and often irritable. I drag out of bed in the morning feeling terrible, just make it to work and back then retreat back to my lounge room, only to repeat the same cycle over and over. So you could say I’m really my own worst enemy. By earlySpring I usuallymakeacomebackandam swimming in the local pool, but am struggling to get going at all now. The extra weight I’m carrying and yucky condition of my skin are making me not want to even try squeezing back into a cozzie or to be seen in public. This worries me heaps as I know unless I get going again soon I’ll get depressed, go nowhere and end up twice my size. I know you’ve helped many people including another local lady who lost over 50kgs. She’s kept it off and looks great, so seeing as I only need to lose about 15 (feels like 30) I’m confident you’ll have a solution and appreciate any natural tips you can offer me. A: Don’t despair... SPRING is the in the air & it’s the perfect time to reboot your system. You can break free from the typical winter hibernation that’s happening more than ever in our high-tech comfy couch culture. This vicious cycle has now become the winter “norm” & is typically perpetuated via comfort eating high-carb, sugar laden foods in the process. Not that all carbohydrates such as those delivered in natural wholefoods are intrinsically bad, being indeed a crucial positive component of a sustainable healthy lifestyle in conjunction with frequent exercise. These are best consumed mostly earlier in the day & certainly not late at night. Conversely, the never ending avalanche of processed foods & pathetic snacks purporting to be healthy options that you need to run away from... are actually not really food at all. Neither is the body able to

fully discern these unnatural substances or process them in order to provide required stamina & cognitive function. The result is always the same i.e. substantial weight gain, depleted energy & brain fog. If the pattern is continued, this eventually leads to a depressed state. Nevertheless, the good news is that you don’t need to go there & it’s all reversible by simply making the right choices. Time to get energised & moving again, tone your muscles, strip off the winter weight, get your acne clear...& most importantly to find the motivation to head to the beach. While the pool may be cool, it can’t confer all the advantages found at the seashore. There’s nothing quite like basking in the sunshine when the warm Spring weather arrives as you enjoy exercising by the sea. Breathe deeply as you briskly walk barefoot on the sand. Ocean swimming is the ultimate multifunctional exercise & with minimal impact on the joints, running either in or out of the water is ideal as your energy returns. As lung function & circulation improves, your overall outlook will quickly brighten & with consistency you’ll soon be fitter & stronger than before. On top of all these great benefits, you’ll also receive a natural dose of invigorating negative ions (higher concentration where waves crash on rocks). Though not visible to the naked eye, these supercharged microscopic babies are scientifically proven to give you both a physical & mental boost. They’re also in abundance after rain or around a waterfall too. Best of all, God gives them free of charge, so anyone can enjoy them anytime. Finally, don’t be concerned about any potential onlookers or let them hinder your recovery. The world is full of many shapes & sizes of radically different & imperfect bodies. So just go for it, enjoy & get well! Here’s a list to help kick-start your daily regeneration program: • Real wholefoods (no exceptions) incl. Organic fruit & veg & fresh local fish • FRJ & WA BP blended with Jarrah 30+ Honey M&N on an empty gut (call for qty) • M&N shake consisting of HOG Org Sprouted Brown Rice Protein, Pure Cinnamon, Org MAQUI Berry (not Acai′), Green Fusion + Fibretone in Nutty Bruce Almond Milk • 2 x Acne Clear Caps after meals • Red Clover tea & add Coco Probiotic Conc. to minimum 2 Litres filtered water

What can I do to prevent osteoporosis?

Y ou can take action to maintain and improve your bone health at every stage of life. Adequate calcium intake, proper vitamin D levels (to help absorb calcium) and specific exercises are all important for healthy bones. For people with low bone density or osteoporosis these 3 factors are very important. For most Australians, the main source of vitamin D is from exposure to sunlight. Vitamin D is produced when our skin is exposed to ultraviolet B (UVB) light from the sun. The amount of sun exposure required to produce adequate levels of vitamin D is relatively low. However many people do not have adequate vitamin D levels, especially during winter. Sun exposure times will vary based on the season, location and skin type and amount of skin exposed. Calcium is essential for building and maintaining bone. Almost 99% of the body’s calciumisfoundinthebones.Calciumcombines with other minerals to form hard crystals that give your bones strength and structure. A small amount of calcium is absorbed into the blood; this calcium is essential for the healthy functioning of the heart, muscles, blood and nerves. Bones act like a calcium bank, if you do not take in enough calcium from your diet, the body will withdraw calcium from your ‘bone bank’ for use in other parts of the body. If your body withdraws more calcium than it deposits, your bone density (bone strength)

milk powder to soups or casseroles, try soy based products and tofu that contain calcium, include broccoli, mustard cabbage, bok choy, silverbeet, cucumber, celery and chick peas in your regular diet, eat more almonds, dried figs and dried apricots, products fortified with calcium (e.g some breakfast cereals) can help Exercise must be regular (at least 3 times per week). Exercise should progress over time (amount of weight used, degree of exercise difficulty, height of jumps...must increase or vary over time to challenge bones and muscles). Exercise routines should be varied (variety in routines is better than repetition) Exercise should be performed in short, intensive bursts improve your calcium intake. Get themost out of exercise

will gradually decline and you may be at risk of developing osteoporosis. The best way to get the recommended level of calcium intake for your age is to eat a diet rich in calcium. Calcium content in food varies significantly, so it is important to consume ‘calcium rich’ foods. Recommended: 3-5 serves of calcium rich food daily (number of serves depends on the level of calcium in each food) Tips for increasing calcium intake Dairy foods contain a high level of calcium which is easily absorbed – include 3 serves per day in your normal diet eg: glass of milk (250 ml), tub of yoghurt (200 g), slice of cheese (40 g). Low fat options contain similar levels of calcium. Try canned salmon or sardines which contain bones rich in calcium, use yoghurt in soups or salads, add milk or skim

Off the Shelf Blinds Versus CustomMade Australian Blinds

M ake no mistake, off the shelf blinds are cheaper than Custom made Australian blinds. If you are lucky enough to have your window measurements the exact size of the blind, then you may be in luck. You can pop into a hardware store, or fabric store and pick up one if they have your size in stock.

But is it a case of buy cheap and buy twice?

Let’s look at the differences…..

• Choose to put your blind inside the window reveal or outside. • Unlimited range of colours, textures and designs. • Fabrics that are anti mould, and fire retardant available. • Can mix and match blinds in same colours but different styles. • Longer warranty. • Parts and serving available to extend the life of the blind. • Made to Australian standards for quality and safety. • Made by Australian workers on Australian wages. • Measured correctly and installed by a professional tradesman. • Advice on Style, colour and what is the most practical and stylish solution for your home • Fabric and Material swatches brought to your home to match your décor. Something you use every day. After the walls in your home, the windows and window furnishings cover the biggest space in your home, but more importantly you use your blinds every day.

For outside blinds they are exposed to the harsh weather and a cheaper blind can look shabby pretty quickly and ruin your street appeal. Most of the Australian custom-made outside blinds have anti mould and have fire retardant treatments in them. The Australian made blind manufacturers have access to leadfree fabrics and fabrics that do not emit any harmful VOCs when warmed up in the hot Australian sun. There are fabrics available now in Australia that are made with equilibrium , which offers a renewable alternative that is lead phthalate free and lowers greenhouse gas emissions as much as 40% The Future is Greener There is a move in Australia for more sustainability and less waste. Its now more relevant than ever to buy things that are built to last and create less landfill. It appears even the blinds you choose could be part of that decision. Off the Shelf Blinds • Cheaper • Limited Colour range and styles • Made only to certain sizes. • Limited advice in store on colour, design, fitting advice. • You install yourself. Do you know what you are doing before you start drilling into your house? • Make overseas and shipped to Australia, so shipping cost included in that cheap price. • Made by overseas workers on overseas wages. • Often not made from scratch but made as one long blind and sliced into lengths. • Short and limited warranty. • Parts and servicing not available. When it breaks its finished. CustomMade in Australia Blinds • Custom made to your exact window measurements. • Can do really long windows or unusual situations. • Ultimate unique and customised decorating look just for your home. • Ability to motorise and connect to home automation systems.
