All copies of the book sold out within the first twenty minutes and many extra orders were placed as a result. Sales Win your own copy of Lucia and Lawrence... I n her debut picture book Lucia and Lawrence, author and illustrator Joanna Francis shares the story of two children who are opposite in their outlook and manner; Lucia is creative, spontaneous and sociable whilst Lawrence is shy, hesitant and logical. The story showcases the realities of friendship between very different people, proving dissimilarities can be celebrated and interests shared through compromise – they are capable of creating magic together when they ‘let each other into their own unique visions of the world’ according to Joanna. Joanna took inspiration for Lucia from her daughter - ‘Illustrating her was easy and fun. Lucia is often surrounded in clouds to represent her dreamy nature’. Lawrence has roots in her son. Her use of a muted colour palette surrounding him highlights the distinction when Lucia introduces ‘colour into his world with her crayons’. Joanna is an artist from Sydney, now living on the Central Coast. Twelve years ago she founded Treehouse Art Studio, a creative space where she runs art classes and workshops. It has been her lifelong ambition to pen a picture book and now her dream has become a reality. Joanna has read to over 2500 school children this month. One preschool set up their reading area to resemble the bedrooms of Lucia and Lawrence. Joanna was informed they had their own ‘Lawrence’ whose classmates would count to him when he was upset.
