RESERVE KNOCKOUT CUP REVIEW: FIRST SUCCESS FOR CORINTHS

There were contrasting fortunes for the 2015 finalists when the current season’s competition kicked off on 5 th September. Holders Bugbrooke made a successful first defence as goals from Adam Roberts and Dan Powell gave them a 2-1 home win over Thrapston. ON Chenecks, beaten by the Badgers in the previous season’s final at Compton Park, were on the wrong end of a drubbing on their return to Cogenhoe who had six players on target in a 7-2 success. Charlie Wixon scored twice with Lee Cotton, Ollie Judge, Kieran Shead, Rhys Taylor and Jermaine Lewin also on the mark. Rothwell Corinthians took their first step towards the final with a 4-1 derby defeat of Harborough with two Callum Plowright goals and one each from Merson Styles and Dan Barker. Tom Martin and Ryan Kalla gave Rushden & Higham a 2-1 win at Irchester while Raunds won 2-1 at Northampton Spencer with goals from Oli Bates and Perry Brown. Peterborough Northern Star beat Whitworth 4-2 with Nick Mason, two goal James Hill- Seekings and Ben Mucklin sharing the goals, but the inclusion of the suspended Dean Giglio saw the Flourmen awarded the tie. Bugbrooke lost their crown in the first quarter final as a lone Rhys Taylor goal gave Cogenhoe a 1-0 success at Birds Close while Raunds won 3-1 at Olney with David Coales, Luke Rivett and Ash Meeks sharing the goals. Reserve Division leaders Rushden & Higham progressed smoothly at Bourne winning 5-0 with two goals from Kris Hall and three from Ryan Kalla. A full set of away wins for the round was completed by a 3-1 Rothwell Corinthians extra time victory at Whitworth. Aaron Lingley scored two and Will Linnett one for Corinths. The semi finals both had surprise outcomes. Three days after losing 8-1 to Rushden & Higham in the League Cogenhoe turned the tables with a 1-0 Compton Park cup success, Charlie Wixon the marksman. Rothwell Corinthians won 2-1 at Raunds with goals from Jordan Ainsworth and Rob Foster. An entertaining final at Thrapston saw Rothwell Corinthians run out 2-1 winners to claim the trophy for the first time. Corinths took the lead after 44 minutes, Chris Clarke converting a penalty awarded for Cooks keeper Kevin Sparkes’ foul on Aaron Lingley. Cogenhoe player-boss Charlie Wixon levelled in the 50 th minute of the first half, heading in after Dan Cotton headed against the crossbar. The decisive goal arrived after 81 minutes, Matt Redding heading the Rothwell winner from Ellary White’s centre from the left.
