2001 TORERO SOFTBALL OUTLOOK

Wells portrays an an-ay of talent and athletic ism. Wells has the ability to play any position on the field. This season, she is expected to strengthen the pitching staff and outfield. We ll s is also a strong hitter, posting a .333 batting average in 2000. The sophomore class consists of two talented ath letes. Lora McBay and Desiree Collo return for their second season ofTorero softba ll . McBay posted a .260 batting average and .968 fielding percentage in her freshman campaign. She is once aga in expected to be a utility player and strong hitter for USD. Collo w ill play first base for the Toreros after posting an impressive .970 fielding percentage in 2000. Seven talented newcomers join the 200 I squad. Allison Williams , Anna Russell and Jennifer Delpit wi ll add depth to San Diego 's pitching staff. Russell and Delpit wi ll also play infield and provide offensive power. Freshman Kirsten Adair is a powerful switch hitter and is expected to play middle infield for USD. Olaya Salazar is a strong hitter and reli ab le defensive player. Salaza r w ill see time in the ou tfi eld and behind the plate for the Toreros. Freshmen Ashley Miller and Cindy McGee w ill provide strength at the plate and speed in the ou tfi eld . Miller will also add depth to the Torero infield. The 200 I schedul e is full of fierce competiti on and excitement. Early in the season, the Toreros wi ll face Pac- I0 foes and national powerhouses, UCLA and Arizona. USD wi ll also host two cha ll enging tournaments at the USD Softball Complex. March 9- 11 th , the Torero Invitational C lassic wi 11 host Tulsa, BYU, Boston College, Northern Iowa and Portland State. The USD Round Robin will be held March 16th and 17th and w ill feature USD, Michigan State Univers ity and San Diego State. The first round of the Western Intercollegiate Softball League Champ ionship will be help at the USD Softball Comp lex. The Toreros will host the Loyola Marymount Lions on Wednesday, May 9th before travelling to LMU for the remainder of the tournament.

"FIRED UP FOR 2001!" The 200 l season marks Head Coach Lin Adams' 8th season guiding the Torero softba ll fortunes. Adams returns 11 letterwinners from last year's 3 1-28 squad , including seven experi enced veteran starters. She also welcomes seven very promising newcomers to the 200 l squad . Adams wi ll rely on four seniors to lead her 2001 ballclub. Three-year letterwinner Jade Quentin w ill lead the Toreros from the pitching circle and at the plate. Quentin is a dominating pitcher and powerful hitter. Last season, she recorded an 11-7 overall record from the mound and a 2. 11 earned run average. Quentin has also been impressive from the plate; she batted .27 l last season and holds a career batting average of .3 15. Jennifer Bridges w ill complete the sen ior battery from behind the plate. The sen ior catcher batted .272 and posted a .964 fielding percentage in her junior campaign while appearing in 54 games. Senior Anne Skidmore is expected to start at second base in 200 I. Last season, she batted .272 and posted an impressive .962 fielding percentage. Skidmore also supplies the Toreros with speed on the basepaths, stealing 7-of-9 bases in 2000. Sen ior Cristina Byrne w ill once agai n provide USD with consistent offense and defense. In her junior campaign , she batted .257 and posted a .945 fieldi ng percentage from center fie ld. Byrne was nearly perfect on the basepaths, recording a team high l 8-of-20 sto len bases. The Toreros also return five va luab le juniors to this year's club. Juniors Kristy Clarke and Nicky Geis will return to the left side of the infield. Last season, Clarke posted a ste ll ar .3 16 batting average while providing solid defense at third base . This season, Geis is expected to lead the Toreros middle infi eld, provide power at the plate and speed on the bases. Last season, she posted a .933 fielding percentage at shortstop. Juni ors Stephanie Bisera and Charlie Smith wi ll display speed and strong an11s in the outfield . Both are talented left-handed hitters w ith base stealing potential. Junior Liz
