G o 10 or 15 minutes in any direction from Portland and you’ll doubt you’re anywhere near Maine’s largest metro area. Both surrounding, and right within Portland, parks and preserves let you find tranquility and inspiration. Spend a day at a sandy beach in Cape Elizabeth or Scarborough, or meandering the leafy trails of Wolfe’s NeckWoods State Park in Freeport. Fly a kite on the open fields of Fort Williams Park—home to the region’s best know landmark, Portland Head Light—while surf crashes on the rocky shore. Identify birds and native plants as you navigate a canoe through an immense salt marsh. Let the ocean tickle your senses on a ferry ride to explore one of the nearby Casco Bay islands by bike. In all seasons you can enjoy Maine’s great outdoors. From the top of Pownal’s Bradbury Mountain, you can gaze over Farms in New Gloucester provide terrific cross-country skiing, as do golf courses blanketed in snow. Local farms let you pick your own apples, pumpkins, and berries and lose yourself in intricate corn mazes. Want to interact with wildlife? From bird-watching at Audubon sanctuaries in Falmouth and Freeport, to whale-watching out of Portland or Boothbay Harbor, there’s plenty of close encounters to be had. And while you’re not likely to catch a glimpse of a moose in Portland, you can meet one at the MaineWildlife Park in Gray, as well as bear, mountain lions and other species. Best of all, you can do all these things and still be back in town in time to enjoy dinner and take in an evening of entertainment! Whether you’re out for a day of shopping, visiting museums and galleries, or touring historic sites, you’re never far from places of pure, scenic beauty.
