HOT TOPICS Regional one-day equity labs to assist with Fiscal Year 2019 planning The Ohio Department of Education is continuing to offer a one-day equity lab, Equity Lab 101: Developing Your Plan , at locations across the state to assist districts with their annual local equitable access planning process if they have not yet completed their local plans. This work ensures that poor and minority students are receiving equitable access to excellent educators, as outlined in the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). During the labs, participants can use the Equitable Access Analysis Tool to determine equity gaps, conduct a root-cause analysis, and identify strategies to address gaps while also setting a goal to measure progress. Each participating district should bring a stakeholder team of three to five people, including participants such as the superintendent, principals, teachers, human resources staff, federal programs staff, parents, or community members. Teams are encouraged to bring a computer device, as participants will have an opportunity to submit their FY19 equity plans in the Comprehensive Continuous Improvement Plan (CCIP). The remaining scheduled training dates and locations are: • Feb. 4, Quest, Columbus; and • Feb. 8, Stark County ESC: Advanced Technology Center, Canton. Registration for Equity Lab 101: Developing Your Plan is available in STARS through your SAFE account ; keyword equity. Calling all Military Veteran Superintendents Ohio has received a 1 million dollar, 5-year grant to help military veterans in Ohio enter the teaching profession. Veterans bring unique skill sets including goal oriented, team focused employees. The Troops to Teachers (TTT) advisory committee is searching for all superintendents that have military service to be points of contacts for Veterans Services Offices and returning veterans. As a POC you would be available to connect with these veterans and give them insight into the teaching profession in a language that they can understand. If the veteran decides they would like further information then the POC would refer them to Lt. Col David H. Schklar, TTT program coordinator. This is a chance for veterans to again serve and help our brothers and sisters to find another way to serve our communities through teaching. If you are interested in being part of this mission email Maj. Mike Hebenthal (USAF Retired) Superintendent Centerburg Local at mike.hebenthal@ centerburgschools.org or Lt Col. David Schklar (USA, Retired) at David.Schklar@edcuation. ohio.gov

Cowles was one of the earliest and most noteable female superintendents in the State of Ohio. She was known for her contributions to education, abolitionism and women’s rights in Ohio. She counted among her friends and acquaintances people such as Frederick Douglas, William Lloyd Garrison, Henry C. Wright and Abby Kelley Foster. Ms. Cowles was a risk taker and stood for what she believed. She spoke out against the Black Laws which kept African Americans from voting in Ohio. She actually quit her teaching job when the school she was working for at the time refused to admit black students. In the 1820’s into the early 1830’s she opened infant schools in northeastern Ohio which were a predecessor to the modern day kindergartens. She earned her teaching degree from Oberlin College in the 1840’s in the third female class to graduate.
