My second year as your Publications Director found me busy working to get your Roster finished in time. The pages used in the front of the book have been passed down from one Roster maker to another for some time and the copy/paste process in the pages was causing a LOT of trouble for me. Soooo this year I made all new pages for most of the government, First Mates and some other pages. I hope you like them. Best of all, I now have all the source files from which the .pdf files for the Roster come from. This will aid me and future Publications Directors for years to come. Feels good to be back in the Great Lakes State and the Sweet Water Seas, comforting to know I’m not on the menu when I’m in the water here. Transparent Burgee & Anchor along with any other images I have are available to any of you who make Flyers, Fan-Outs, or any other NCYC document where you may want an NCYC image on something other than a white background. Drop me an email to bearhooks@comcast.net and I’ll send the files to you for your own use. I finally got around to making an NCYC Burgee & Wheel Logo with a Transparent background, it’s on the Cover of this Beacon. This is a Logo that can be put on backgrounds that aren’t white and it’ll look good. For a visual, I made the cover of this Beacon with the old Burgee & Wheel shown here to the right so you can see the difference. Sadly, I didn’t get this done in time for this years Roster, it has the Transparent Burgee I made last year. This new

We are now in the month of May and it appears we are looking like we may have a little Spring weather. Our last two (2) Elite Brigade work parties were well attended and we are starting to get some things accomplished. The new siding is starting to make good headway thanks to Don Shepperson’s leadership. The new floor in the kitchen area in front of the ice makers is also taking shape thanks to the leadership of John Mantyk with the help of Dennis Pomeroy and Steve Murray (who is a new member). We still have a list of duties that are still required to make the island come alive. So please plan on coming out and lending a hand. We have had several new members attend the Elite Brigade weekends so far and their work efforts are truly appreciated by the Club. Exciting news……..P/C Denise Huntley along with P/C Bill Bauer are bringing back our Steer Roast for our “Fitting Out” weekend starting May 26 th . The First mates will be hosting an appetizer patio party before the General membership meeting. We then have our General Membership meeting which starts at 1:00 PM, where you will get a chance to meet our new members, followed by the Steer Roast. We have entertainment planned that evening. On Sunday we will continue with our opening Flag raising ceremonies with a complementary luncheon to follow. Please mark your calendars for Ladies Week. It will be starting Sunday June 10 th at 6:00 PM thru Thursday, June 14 th after lunch. Look for future Fan Outs for further information. We still need 2 weekday managers to fill our missing slots in September. Please try to get some member friends together to fill those two missing weeks and let Vicky or Dick Raymond know. (810-794-4850). Regards, Commodore Randy

Welcome to Spring! Hopefully Mother Nature receives the memo so that she can turn up the heat and shut off the water sprinkler. The first Elite Brigade was a little soggy, but there were still a number of members in attendance working on the interior of the Club House. The second Elite Brigade had sunshine and an amazing turn out of members. It is truly impressive how much work can get accomplished in four short hours. Please come out for the remaining work parties, it’s a great way to reconnect with friends and meet the new members. Coming up on May 6 th is the First Mates Fashion show. The lucky ladies in attendance will be able to see the newest line of NCYC clothing. It’s a great event to pick up presents for your loved ones. Memorial Day weekend is just around the corner. This is a very special weekend at NCYC. It kicks off Friday night with welcoming our new caterer who will be serving our Friday night dinners. Saturday morning starts with a First Mates General Membership Meeting and their Annual Patio Party hosted by NCYC First Mates for all NCYC membership to attend. Shortly afterwards the General Membership Meeting is held, and the new members of NCYC are introduced. The day continues into the evening with the Fitting Out Dinner and live entertainment. Sunday, the Pride of Michigan arrives and the Official Flag Raising Ceremony - paying honor and remembrance to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Ceremonies are followed by the Commodore’s luncheon and Blessing of the NCYC fleet. Along with being steeped in tradition, this is a fun packed weekend. As the Club events start up on the Memorial Day weekend, so do our weekend work hours. Please ensure that you know what weekend you are working. If you are not sure, please reach out to the Club Secretary, Glenn Nixon. By doing our part we can remain a “working club”, which is also part of our tradition. See you on the Island, V/C Ian Blackburn

1973. Our grandparents went to Cape Cod and all we got was this super great beach house that’s still in the family in 2017.

It’s not easy to leave a lasting legacy. It requires thinking well beyond portfolio strategy to consider longer-term needs, like transferring wealth and minimizing tax implications. With our flag raising ceremony just around the corner, I thought I would cover "Flag Etiquette". I have taken my information out of the 66th Edition of "Chapman Piloting and Seamanship" written by Charles B. Husick (2009) and internet other sites displaying US Flag and during Maritime. The flag pole or mast of a yacht club is considered to represent the mast of a vessel, and the peak of the gaff, if one is used, is the place of honor from which the U.S. ensign is flown, just as it would be on a gaff- rigged boat. The location of the gaff on the pole is opposite to the direction to the water-as if it were on a ship standing out to sea” (p. 859). On a gaff rigged flag pole it is acceptable to fly another flag, such as a yacht club burgee, at the very top of the pole. This is acceptable because the burgee would not be "directly on top of" the U.S. ensign. Even though this does not apply to N.C.Y.C., because we fly our burgee at the very top of our club house, I just wanted to point it out as proper flag etiquette. Looking sea ward towards the flag pole you will see a horizontal pole. This pole is referred to as "the yard arm". Foreign ensigns and other club affiliations may be flown to your right and flag officers would be flown to your left. For further information concerning flag etiquette for both land based or out to sea also piloting and seaman ship refer to your latest edition of Chapman's Piloting and Seamanship.

See you o the Island, R/C Bill

Chapman's Piloting and Seamanship Husick (2009, p 858)

Those who would not respect this Flag, have never been handed a folded one.

To the best of my knowledge our membership all seem to be in good health. Good Job We have received the distressing news about Kim and Jeff Miller, daughter and son in-law of Greg and Yvonne Murray. Kim is going through chemo for cancer while Jeff has suffered multiple strokes. They are having a difficult time so friends and relatives have organized a few ways for us to help. If you any questions regarding these caring plans, contact Yvonne Murray. All prayers and kind thoughts are very much appreciated.

Mom’s Way Author Unknown

She had an answer for everything. She seemed to be able to do about ten things at one time. She had plenty of love but even more patience. No one ever worked harder. She seemed to have eyes in the back of her head. She always had time to watch every little accomplishment. She could tell whenever you were up to something. She could make you feel better when no one else could. She knew the true meaning behind your words. She could turn a simple event into a celebration. She knows you better than anyone. She had a special way of making you feel loved. She is the reason you are here today. Sound like someone you know or remember???? Happy Mother’s Day to all the NCYC Moms, Mothers-In- Law, Grandmothers, Daughters, Sisters, Favorite Aunts and Cousins

NORTH CHANNEL YACHT CLUB FIRST MATES

Hello NCYC Members, For those who missed the last Beacon, again, let me introduce myself for those who do not know me. My name is Leslie Leitch and I have been working with the past three Commodores on organizing the use of our club from other yacht clubs and incoming rendezvous. This year Commodore Randy Pagel has established a position now known as Harbor Master. My duties are to take requests from other clubs and present them to the Board and Bridge for approval. They discuss the dates and incoming clubs by either approving the request or not based on our club’s activities for those days. The focus has been to promote clubs to come during the week more than the weekends, but there have been some approved incoming weekends that should not interfere with our members regarding available wells.. Therefore, my other duty is to notify our members of those approved incoming boats in order for you to note them on your calendar and be aware of these outings. The following are the approved incoming rendezvous for the upcoming 2018 boating season: 6/1-6/3 - ABYA Spring Dinner Dance -Limited to 30 ABYA boats: weekend 6/22 – Antique Boat Poker Run -no wells -just a stop by Saturday 7/16 -7/19 – Sandusky Yacht Club - 8 boats: Mon -Thurs

7/23-7/26 – CYC -12 boats: Mon -Thurs 7/27-7/29 – JBM – 25-30 boats: weekend 7/31 – 8/3 Harbor View Yacht Club – 14 boats: Tues -Fri morn 8/3 – 8/5 Sand Pointe – 15 boats: weekend

In addition to the approved incoming there are three more to add to your calendar: June 27 th Water Warriors Poker Run 2:30 -4pm: Weds Aug 10 th -12 th Power Squadron – 8 boats: weekend Sept 21 st -23 rd Bombay Boat Club – 12 boats: weekend Upcoming Reminder for June: June 1-3 ABYA Spring Dinner Dance-30 boats – this event is open to all NCYC members 6/22 – Antique Boat Poker Run -no wells -just a stop by Saturday

Motion Carried Commodore, Randy Pagel I want to thank all of you for the beautiful flowers and cards you sent the past few weeks on behalf of NCYC for my brother Mark. My family and I truly appreciate the support we received from all of you. We are getting closer to opening the club and have lots planned for the year. We will attempt to visit the island Saturday March 17 th in an attempt to measure up the vinyl siding needed to get the material ordered. Commodore’s Comments

We have the ABYA Midland gathering this weekend and also the Blessing of the Fleet on Sunday at Mariners Church starting at 11:0 am. P/C Carroll will share more details about the Midland trip in his ABYA report. Vice-Commodore’s Comments Vice Commodore, Ian Blackburn Welcome to the March meeting. We have 5 weeks remaining until the first Elite Brigade takes place. If you have projects that need completing during the work parties, now is the time to recruit a team of members to help accomplish these projects. Tonight, Debbie Siwek will be asking for our help to conduct interviews with the perspective members. If you volunteer to conduct an interview, thank-you and please try to have them completed before the next board meeting. So that if appropriate, we can approve them and get them entered into the roster. Rear-Commodore’s Comments Rear Commodore, Bill Calihan Unfortunately, it’s been a tough month for some of our members since we last met. Commodore Randy Pagel’s brother Mark Bumler passed on February 11th, club house manager Dick Raymond’s mother Raietta Jane Ott passed on March 3 rd and our good friend from across the North Channel Billy Befour lost his father William L Belfour II on February 26. For those that did not know, Bill was instrumental in the creation of the Macomb County Marine Division and dive team. Bill served as the division’s Lieutenant for many years before retiring from the division to run and operate his Belfore Marina and gas dock. They will all truly be missed. Keep them in your thoughts and prayers. With the ice clearing out and the majority of the days now seeming to be getting milder, we will be visiting the island before you know it. It is a real bonus to get out there before the Elite Brigades start. It gives you a better perspective after you can assess how the building, harbor and grounds fared the winter weather. Looking forward to seeing you out on the island. Treasurer, Brian Fringer Light this month. Majority of the money coming in from February is from dues. Income is about $95,000. Financial review documents have been sent to auditor – want to have available for BOD meeting in May to be ready for General Membership meeting later that month. Signatures cards from 5th/3rd are done. MOTION: Moved by Tom Altobelli and seconded by Scott Greenfelder to approve the Financial Report. Motion Carried P/C Pat Carroll The guest speaker at the ABYA March meeting was Abby Lane of the Clinton River Watershed Council. Abby presented a slid show that explained what the CRWC does: To study, improve, clean and promote the Clinton River and its surrounding area. The schedule for their 2018 events can be found at crec.org. Also discussed were the North Chanel Lights initiative. Please take the time to fill out the survey found on the ABYA website. The more surveys that are filled out and turned in to the US Coast Guard help to convince the Coast Guard that the lights are truly needed. The Underwater Land lease and Clean Marina Certificate Programs were discussed and can be accessed at the MBIA website. Financial Report ABYA Report

Talked about the Clean Marine Certification Program and whether NCYC should sign up. Cost is $400 and will require someone to take a class. Being we don’t sell gas or have a large garbage disposal, may not be worth it. Scott asked if this certificate might help in our effort to renew the harbor lease coming up? $300 to take the class, $100 fee every 3 years. Scott would like to take the class. P/C Carroll will get more information. Upcoming ABYA Events: • ABYA Spring Rendezvous March 9 th , 10 th and 11 th . • ABYA Millionaires Party at the Winter Gardens Tavern March 28 th -31st and April 11 th – 14 th . • Volunteers are needed for these dates. • ABYA Mac Ray Harbor Educational Series classes March 22th. • Celebrate the Lake June 9 th at Mac Ray Harbor. • MBIA Metro Boar Show this September, • ABYA Commodore’s Ball December 1th, 2018, • Info on all events can be found on the ABYA website. Correspondence All Brian received a letter from Inner Lakes Yachtsman Fund looking for yacht club donations of $1 per member. Has nothing to do with ILYA. Board decided against donating. Our annual dues for ILYA were discussed. Motion to approve renewing by Scott Greenfelder, second Bill Calihan. Motion Carried R/C Bill Calihan suggest we send a sympathy card on behalf of NCYC to Bill Belfore for the passing of his father. Commodore Pagel heard from Judy McHugh who attended the funeral of Dick Raymond’s mother and stated the flowers sent by NCYC were “gorgeous”. PC Whyard’s appreciation award is finished and P/C Pagel will send. P/C Carroll received a call from the son of original Chrysler Yacht Club Commodore P/C Jack Buzard and requested that we hang a picture and biography of his late father in the clubhouse. All agreed this would be very nice and approved. P/C Carroll invited him to visit the club for this event, but physical mobility will prevent him from visiting. Ron suggested he add this picture to the upcoming 2018 roster

in the history section. CURRENT BUSINESS Activities –

Tom Martin

Passed out the spreadsheet of activities for the year. Still changes to be made. Club House – Scott Greenfelder Gas valves for the stove are due in. Also, Mr. James Taylor (not the singer) from Simco gas would like to visit the club as part of Scott’s investigation into replacing the current LP tank gas supply to the clubhouse. After re-inspecting the floor thickness under the icemaker, I need to rethink the floor plan. The floor is not as thick as I thought.

John Mantyk wants to take on the project of taking down the ceiling on second floor hallway as it’s in bad shape. Commodore Pagel asked why not put a lay-in ceiling? Would rather have him take on the project of replacing the floor under the ice machine. Harbor & Grounds Tom Altobelli Talked to Tom Stackpoole and he will continue to handle the club grounds. Made contact with 2 landscapers to replace sprinkler heads in the flower beds. Tom wants to do a Fanout for certain skilled projects needing done this spring – wants to make sure we get the right people on the work party weekends he needs them at. One example is the 50-amp electrical hook-up on D dock. Ron will help with the Fanout. Membership Debbie Siwek We have 229 members, 16 on waiting list. LOA Dave Trendell Resignations: Allison Weishaupt Gerald Snowden Donna Glick Tony Serra Sent letter to Doug Volser to terminate membership. Needs to pay $300 in late fees to remain in good standings. Passed out interview applications and scheduled interviews for all on waiting list. Dale Hall indicated Michael and Teresa Kelly will be getting Debbie an application for membership. Publications – Ron Draper Draft roster ready for board and flag to review in the next weeks. Ad for extra roster is working, got 8 requested. Brian says we need to figure out Club Express bank account. Secretary – Glenn Nixon • Latest weekend OD and worker schedule snapshot full master spreadsheet sent to full board for review 3/8 am. Status of the worker schedule: o Total budget for the season = 2,696 hours, current scheduled = 2560 hours, so short by 136 hours. I have not done a full reconciliation yet so I don't have the list of who should be scheduled but are not yet scheduled. I will have this list and new snapshot for the April meeting. o There are 5 weekends still lacking a full complement of workers - Fringer, Greenfelder, Martin, Nixon and Siwek. As last year, the most critical shortage is Labor Day weekend (Greenfelder) o There are 4 weekends more than 8 hours over budget - Carroll, Carnaghi, McHugh and Draper. If I cannot fill the shortage weekends by end of March, I will be contacting these ODs for ideas who on their weekend could shift to weekends with shortage.

• First draft of 2018 OD Manual sent to board for input on 3/8. Requested responses by end of March. I will then update the documents to send to weekend OD and weekday managers for their input during the month of April. Will then finalize and request board approval on the final version at the May meeting. Packages will be printed and assembled prior to opening weekend.

• Attempting to coordinate with Ken Smith on populating the online calendar. • Debbie needs to email names of resignations so they don’t get scheduled.

• Scanned all the roster sheets to update the schedule. • Talked about working with Ken Smith on POS manual. Supplies –

Dale Hall One thing. An update from last month. Different prices for visitors at the bar. Proposed we have a swipe card and set up one of the registers at a different price. The “party” prices would also become our guest prices. This will require logging on and off for switching between member and party/guest prices. P/C Carroll raised the concern about raising prices for guests. He brought up that one reason people come back to the club is the reasonable bar prices. Lots of discussion took place about the pros and cons of charging higher bar prices for guests and its ability to bring in more revenue by charging higher prices. It was brought up that a number of our members were questioning why we allow guests to get the same bar discount as paying members. Discussed the loss of revenue from cutting back on guests visiting the club. Board agrees with charging higher prices for clubs and organizations that come in for the day vs. people visiting to stay overnight. Also discussed reducing the number of outside rendezvous coming in from other clubs. Do we allow too many? NCYC is a private club. Decision was made to proceed with the second cash register card so changing party prices will be easier (simple swipe). Concerned about the complexity for doing this. Will educating the members who don’t bartend much will be a concern? Not a concern as this won’t have to be done multiple times, just for party events. Transportation – Darryl Campbell Belfore’s canal still has lots of ice preventing Fin launch at this immediate time. Port Supply account used by Darryl to support Fin needs has been closed. May look to Mid-West supply instead. There’s an unmarked watercraft trailer in the club parking lot. Will be taken outside fence. Tom Altobelli asked Darryl to notified the board members once the first Fin gets launched. Commodore Pagel stated the need to communicate when someone takes the Fin to ensure no one needs it and it isn’t there. Fleet Captain – Ken Lipowski No repot.
