On the Cover The 36-foot Kitty Hawk belongs to Gene Robinson and was built of oak and cedar by his brother Mike in 1986. Gene has replaced the engine five times, most recently this spring. The Kitty Hawk has all the latest electronics and a hydraulic hauler. Gene and his stern man, Morgan Kuntz, have 800 traps in. Gene started lobstering in 1965 and has been out every year since, except for the four years he spent in the United States Coast Guard. He says that the best part of lobstering is getting done in the fall! About the Calendar The Calendar is published monthly by the Chebeague Island Council. The Calendar welcomes submissions from its readers, including letters and thank you notes, but it cannot publish anything that is political in nature, libelous, or obscene. All submissions should include the author’s name and contact information. Without exception, the deadline for submission is noon on the 20th day of the month preceding publication. Transfer Station Closings

Summer is flying by! The 4 th of July Road Race and Parade were wonderful, and over 100 folks came to the second annual CICC Brunch. Thanks to everyone who worked so hard. There are so many fun things going on this summer—lots of music, ice cream socials, plays, poetry, camps, cruises, the House Tour. bake sales, yard sales, the Red Studio Resale Shop, and Schoolhouse Seconds, to name just a few. It is great to see so many on the golf course, on the tennis courts and at the Rec Center. Chebeague is an amazing community any time of the year, but summer is when it really comes to life. Enjoy!

The transfer station is closed during all graveside burials. This is done to eliminate the traffic and compactor noise, out of respect for the deceased, family, and friends. Before a service, a sign will be placed at the bottom of the transfer station drive indicating when a closing will occur.

Pending Experimental Aquaculture Lease— Great Ledge Cove Seafood, LLC has applied to the Department of Marine Resources for a limited-purpose (experimental) aquaculture lease to grow sugar kelp, horsetail kelp, and winged kelp using suspended culture on a 3.96-acre site located northeast of Little Chebeague Island, Western Chandlers Cove, Casco Bay, Chebeague Island. Other compatible uses of the area would be permitted. The application is posted on the DMR website at www.maine.gov/ dmr/aquaculture , under “Pending Aquaculture Lease Applications.” The Commissioner announces a public comment period for this application. A public hearing is required only if requested in writing by five (5) or more interested persons prior to the comment deadline. The deadline for comments and hearing requests is August 14, 2017. Mail written comments or hearing requests to the Department of Marine Resources, Attn: Aquaculture Administrator, 21 State House Station, Augusta, Maine 04333-0021. Please remember that this is a pay-as-you-throw facility . We don’t charge for household trash, but we do charge for bulky waste that has to be transported in our construction and demolition containers. Fees are posted at the Transfer Station. There is free non- commercial disposal during Bulky Waste weekend (August 5 and 6). Bulky Trash and Hazardous Waste Weekend— We will hold our Bulky Trash and Hazardous Waste Weekend on August 5 and 6 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Please watch for posters that describe what you can bring to the Town Garage for disposal. Volunteer Opportunities— We have one vacancy on the Planning Board and one vacancy on the Road Plan Committee . Wellness Matters: Safe Drug Disposal by Jenny Hackel

W e used to believe that it was better to flush medicine you no longer needed down the toilet, to keep it from the reach of children and pets or being shared inappropriately with others. Yet, a 2002 study by the U.S. Geological Service found groundwater contaminated with 82 different prescription drugs owing to flushing of old medications or landfill runoff resulting from disposal of drugs in regular trash. In the 15 years since that study, prescription use has increased, while funding for environmental protection has decreased. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has found antibiotics, hormones, and other drugs in both municipal water and rural groundwater systems that are potentially dangerous to the community’s health. Drug contaminants in the water—even in bottled or filtered water—include chemicals that lower blood pressure and heart rate, affect the brain and nervous system, and alter the reproductive hormones. While the average person thinks of antibiotics as drugs that make people well, when they are not

specifically tailored to cure a particular infection, they can alter the body’s natural defense mechanisms and make a person sick, allergic, or resistant to the drugs should an infection arise. Similarly, hormones that treat a deficiency in one person may cause cancer in another. The best advice is to talk with your health care provider about the safest way to treat your health conditions with the fewest number of drugs at the lowest doses, never share your prescriptions drugs with others, and always safely dispose of drugs no longer needed. The EPA details a safer disposal method on their website. Better yet, you can bring the drugs you no longer need to a drug takeback programcosponsoredby the EPAandMainepharmacy associations. The next collection on Chebeague will be Saturday August 19 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 pm. at the Public Safety Building . Last year, several trash bags full of unwanted prescriptions were kept out of Chebeague groundwater with this program, making our groundwater safer not only for humans but also for the entire ecosystem of the island.

Marty’s Memories: Getting to Chebeague by Marty Trower

The best part about going to and being on Chebeague is boats and, of course, the water. Yet after twice spotting a small helicopter parked on the lawn of the inn this summer, I couldn’t help but feel a huge loss of our way of life on the island. My memories go back to the 1950s when the Nellie G the third took us over, leaving from Handy Boat Service on Falmouth Foreside and stopping at Cousins and Littlejohn islands. There was enough parking at Handy Boat for all, and you could get a ride into Portland in a bus driven by Jimmy Millinger, who was also a deckhand. Handy Boat was abuzz with boats of all kinds and talk about boats, but my focus was on the tiny restaurant at the end of the dock where the most wonderful butterscotch brownies awaited me under a clear dome cover. At the Stone Pier, my best friend, Maggie, would meet me, her hair in pigtails and her bare feet already toughened up. Clyde and Geneva Bowen would be there in their taxi to take the family and our stuff to our cottage on Hamilton Beach. I would opt to run up the hill with my exuberant friend, who would make me remove my shoes immediately. She’d have to throw me onto her back, though, when she’d insist on running through their fields of thorny vegetation. We were heartbroken when Casco Bay Lines replaced the Nellie G , but we were rescued by Jasper (Smitty) Smith’s starting a water taxi service with his lobster boat the Polly-Lin . An entirely different flavor

of camaraderie developed as we negotiated this new, unscheduled trip passage over. Smitty was devoted and accommodating to us all. I remember agonizing about how to get to and from my first summer job in Portland when I had to work past the time when Smitty would do his trips. He offered to lend me his punt with a small outboard motor to get over and back! That was the kindest gesture, but oh, I had an awful time at first with the outboard. Every time I touched the handle of it, I got an electric shock! I must’ve looked silly, zigzagging across the water. Who knew I was merely trying to avoid the painful zapping that traveled up my arm to my teeth! Now, we have the Islander and a hardworking company that strives to meet all our transportation and parking needs. In the off season, we pass through crazy weather insults just to board the boat, but that topic becomes the start of all sorts of fun conversations with fellow travelers who in turn become friends. For all of us, whether summer people or year-rounders, the island and all it takes to make it our home is the common denominator. Lately though, with masses of strangers filling the parking lots to overflowing, the ferry jammed with luggage and other “necessities,” new homeowners putting up their own piers, and helicopters bringing guests to the inn, I fear we are losing a way of life that is unique and compelling. But perhaps that cannot really happen if we maintain that loving relationship with each other, our boats, and the sea. CHEBEAGUE TRANSPORTATION COMPANY What’s New at CTC? CTC Annual Members’ Meeting The 4th Annual Member Meeting held on 7/15 was well attended. Following are the highlights:  President Mike Conroy called the meeting to order and started the meeting by recognizing current and past directors. Mike also recog- nized the contribution of CTC employees and their commitment to cus- tomer service and safety.  Carol Sabasteanski presented the Treasurer’s Report. 2016 was a banner year for CTC with net income approaching $169,000. Revenue and ridership were at all time highs.  In the President’s Report, Mike discussed the highlights of 2016: - Strong financial performance - crediting the volume of business and a proactive maintenance plan. - Focus on safety. CTC far exceeds the required safety drills, holds quarterly “all hands” drills, and received an excellent Coast Guard inspection. - Plan for building a new ferry. Mike gave an overview of the plans for a new ferry, sharing some drawings developed by Washburn and Doughty. The new ferry will be slight- ly bigger than the Islander in order to increase allowed passenger count to 119 (plus 3 crew). (This was the passenger count allowed on the Islander until 2012 when new regulations were effective). - The implementation of Strategic Plan goals from 2015. Mike reported progress on two goals Revisit the restrictions under which we operate . Mike described efforts by CTC to improve relations with Harmony Hill including better signage, fence improvements, and reduction of nighttime light pollution. CTC has been an active participant in discussions with the joint standing committee of Chebeague and Yarmouth. The improved relations were reflected earlier this year when the Yarmouth Town Council approved continuing the two extra school boats during the school year. Decision on new vessel . Mike reported that after an extensive ( but unsuccessful) search to find a used vessel, the company began working with Washburn and Doughty in late 2016 to explore the possibility of building a ferry. Plans are nearly final and the estimated build cost is $1.1 million. A community meeting will be held in August to review the plans and receive community input. * In the General Manager’s Report Carol provided an update on 2016 goals, a service report, customer service program statistics, and other 2016 activities. The sale of the Pied Piper in February 2016 was a major accomplishment.  After the election of directors and the clerk of the corporation, the meet- ing was adjourned.

The Recompense Fund Board invites you to join us at our Community Pizza Picnic on Sunday August 6 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Chebeague Island School. We’ll be firing up the school’s famous outdoor wood oven to churn out delicious pizzas for all who come. Invite family, friends, and guests to join you. The fund is stoking the oven and providing the picnic. Just bring along your lawn chair or picnic blanket. We’ll be celebrating the fund’s 2017 awards to Chebeague nonprofits, honoring the accomplishments of our 2016 grantees, and recognizing the fund’s dedicated donors.
