Two-year residency requirement for first year students

UC Merced requires ALL incoming first year undergraduate students to live on campus for two academic years, unless they qualify for a residency exemption waiver. For a complete list of residency exemptions, visit housing.ucmerced.edu/housing-requirement .

A Living Learning Community

The mission of Housing and Residence Life at UC Merced is to provide clean, safe, student-centered residential communities. We cultivate our living learning experience to support academic accomplishment, diversity and respect for human dignity and student success. Living on campus offers more than just a place to eat and sleep. In fact, a significant amount of experiential learning occurs in the residence halls. Students living on campus will be presented with opportunities to further develop valuable skills as they transition to the University and prepare for life thereafter. By living on campus as a first year student, you will transition more smoothly from high school to college and reside in living learning communities that will allow you to develop social connections with your peers and interact with faculty outside of the classroom. In your second year, you will have the opportunity to participate in structured programs focused on academic success, career exploration, community engagement and life skill development.
