LIVING ON CAMPUS

Two-year residency requirement for first year students

UC Merced requires ALL incoming first year undergraduate students to live on campus for two academic years, unless they qualify for a residency exemption waiver. For a complete list of residency exemptions, visit housing.ucmerced.edu/housing-requirement .

A Living Learning Community

The mission of Housing and Residence Life at UC Merced is to provide clean, safe, student-centered residential communities. We cultivate our living learning experience to support academic accomplishment, diversity and respect for human dignity and student success. Living on campus offers more than just a place to eat and sleep. In fact, a significant amount of experiential learning occurs in the residence halls. Students living on campus will be presented with opportunities to further develop valuable skills as they transition to the University and prepare for life thereafter. By living on campus as a first year student, you will transition more smoothly from high school to college and reside in living learning communities that will allow you to develop social connections with your peers and interact with faculty outside of the classroom. In your second year, you will have the opportunity to participate in structured programs focused on academic success, career exploration, community engagement and life skill development. Our themed Living Learning Communities offer an enhanced living experience that integrates an academic field of study and living with similar-minded student scholars. » » Afro Hall » » Fiat Lux Scholars » » Natural Sciences Learning Communities » » Leadership and Service Learning Community » » Social Justice Learning Community » » Gender Inclusive Housing - Inclusive communities for students of varying gender identities.

Housing wings are connected by a centralized hub that contains lounges, game rooms and multipurpose rooms. On the ground floor are classrooms and meeting spaces for campus clubs and organizations.

The Summits Cathedral Hall, Tenaya Hall and Half Dome

The Summits is designed as a traditional corridor-style residence hall experience with five bedrooms sharing a common bathroom. Meal Plans

A meal plan is mandatory, because residence halls do not have kitchen facilities that allow all students to cook meals on a regular basis. What meal plans are provided? Students can select an “All You Care to Eat” meal plan that meets their weekly dietary needs. To learn more about the UC Merced dining plans and select the one that’s right for you, read the residential dining guide at housing.ucmerced.edu for information about costs, and how and where the dining plan works. UC Merced Dining Services provides several options for students who choose to eat a vegetarian, vegan or gluten-sensitive diet, and strives to ensure that students with special dietary needs are able to dine safely in our facilities. If you have any challenges navigating our menu offerings, or need additional support, you can email executive chef Mitch Vanagten at mvanagten@ucmerced.edu to schedule a dining consultation.

Wait 24 hours.

Visit housing.ucmerced.edu and submit your housing preference form application.

Ways to get around Merced

PARKING First year students are not eligible to purchase on-campus parking permits; however, those who meet specific criteria can file a petition.

Campus Safety

Ensuring your safety and security and that of our community is the UC Merced Police Department’s top priority; that is why each officer, public safety dispatcher and Community Service Officer (CSO) is highly trained and focused on customer service to meet your needs.
