M.E.Ch.A. M.E .Ch .A. (Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan): A Chicano/a organiza– tion which was founded at a conference held in Santa Barbara, California in April 1968. Concerned Raza and community members gatheres at this conference to draw attention to the needs and concerns ofChicanos, both in the educational system and in the commu– nity. Although M.E.Ch.A. originated in the southwest, it has quickly spread throughout the United States. The term Chicano asserts our pride and respect for our indigenous roots . We assert ourMexicanidad and commitment to struggle against the forces that keep our people op– pressed. We must accept the challenge to take on racism, sexism, and homophobia, insideand outside of our movement in order to better develop a more meaningful educa– tional plan of action. Our primary goals are: to take part in the direction of the movement towards Chicano self-determination or control over one's own destiny; to socialize and politicize Chicano students on their particular campus, to the ideals of the movement; to educate and mobolize barrio youth towards self-determi– nation and not self-destruction. As a Chicano student movement, we seek to liberate our gente(people) from exploitation. In advocat– ing an educational revolution, we recognize that our bullets are our books and our victo– ries are an increase in Chicano/a graduates committed to our people's progress . BSU

The Black Student Union (BSU) is geared to enhance the educational environment ofall University ofSan Diego students and employees; to provide a program to increase recruitment and retention ofAfrican-American students. They also provide opportunities for the increased sensitiv– ity of the student body towards minority citizens through education and involvment. BSU supports the University Missionand acts as a positive outreach tot he community and minority organizations.
