Notes from the Council

DR. O’DONNELL IS RETURNING TO THE WELLNESS CENTER THIS SUMMER!

The island is beginning to hum with all the activities, return of the summer natives, and many visitors. Traffic has picked up significantly. Please be extra careful and extra considerate when driving, walking, biking, or jogging on our narrow island roads. Chebeague is a special place, but all the usual rules of the road apply: obey the speed limit, ride single file on bikes when cars are passing, allow three feet between your car and the bike when passing a bike, walk and jog on the correct side of the road (facing the traffic), and walk or jog single file when cars are trying to pass. Dogs should be on a leash. Please remind your children to follow the rules of the road as well. It seems as though every summer there are more and more cars, pedestrians, dogs, and bikes— sometimes more than these narrow roads and sharp turns can safely handle without everyone making safety a priority. Thank you.

Island Commons Notes from the Hall

Martha KomLosy Hamilton was a lifelong lover and promoter of the arts and handcrafting, whether it was taking Girl Scouts to a play in Portland, serving as the town librarian, assembling a vast collection of costumes and props for island plays, singing in the Whalers, or creating her own art through numerous mediums. Martha was also involved in many of the nonprofits on the island—always willing to roll up her sleeves and get to work. As a way of honoring her memory, the Hall is once again sponsoring Martha Hamilton Arts for the Island Extravaganza to promote and help sustain many of the things she loved. A cover charge of $5 will gain you entrance to this fabulous array of arts and crafts material, where—for instance— you can gather up the pieces needed to make a sweater, carve a spoon, paint an island scene, make sea glass jewelry, or hook a rug. Have you ever wanted to dabble in watercolors, design a quilt, or make a dollhouse? Here is your chance to do it! There is no limit to the items you may take, but please leave a few things for others! And don’t forget to bring your own bags! Let’s carry on Martha’s work on the island. Date: July 27, 2018 Time: 10:00 a.m. to noon

Location: The Hall Admission: $5, with children under 16 years of age admitted free DONATIONS NEEDED: Please contact Sam McLean (846- 0510 or samhidval@gmail.com ) if you have items you would like to donate for the swap. Marty’s Memories: Joan Robinson by Marty Trower

Trying to imagine July on Chebeague without Joan Robinson in our midst is difficult. There will be lots of people around and a lot going on, but Joan’s appearance at and involvement in all of it will be missed. Sally Capps Tubbesing, Barbara Hamilton, and Althea Dugliss will not be with us either; their absence in our vibrant and complicated life on the island is so noticeable, it hurts. Joan was, to me, always, Chebeague. In my childhood, summers, she was the Toohey family’s babysitter and, since they were our best friends, we all spent time a lot of time together on Hamilton beach. When I got to know her as an adult, Joan often commented on her memory of that time, which was simply our tiny, doll- sized wet bathing suits all lined up, dripping on the clothesline. I remember only that Joan had a boyfriend, a handsome man named Bud, and that was the first time I became aware that girls and boys dated and sometimes became husband and wife. Joan was present everywhere in the community; always walking or biking or driving “shut-ins” around the island; she didn’t miss an event, and she participated in all of it. She sang in church and with the Whalers, she “acted” in plays (remember her as the back end of a horse?), she knit for the Ladies Aid, and she always brought her orange ambrosia salad to all public eating venues. When my mother was sick and could no longer make meals for my father, Joan came and cooked noontime meals for them. When

the visiting nurse sat us down that day to tell us that my mother would not be with us much longer, Joan was with my father and I on the couch. I leaned over and took my father’s hand. Joan, on the other side of me, in turn took my other hand and squeezed it. How can you forget a moment like that? When I moved to the island full time, Joan and I worked together at the golf club as clubhouse attendants. Nothing bonds people together tighter than the agonizing process of reconciling the “books” at the close of a stint at the cash register. Joan could always see the humor in situations. At the pool, traveling in Jordan, speaking at memorial services, Joan chuckled as she related a situation that was “quite comical, really.” I will remember Joan as a strong and always hopeful woman. Before her final illness and her time in rehab facilities and at the Commons, I was in the habit of stopping by while walking my dog and visiting with Joan on her porch in the early morning. One time, she greeted me by saying, “You know, an amazing thing just happened. I heard a crow up in that tree just now. When I looked up at it, I heard it say, ‘Hi, Gram.’ What do you make of that?” I said that I believed her, and I did. As much as Joan enjoyed life with us here, I know she believed and looked forward to being with her adored grandson William again and being surrounded by enduring love. Community Matters: Pitch in at Chedemption

Wow!! In 2017, volunteers from 13 island nonprofits packed and shipped off 40,951 glass bottles, 74,860 cans, and 16,310 plastic bottles. Impressive as those numbers sound, this task is never ending, and we need your help to keep this Chebeague Island Council program running. The Chedemption schedule for each nonprofit is listed to the right and posted on the back wall of the Chedemption shed under the roll of plastic bags. Your participation benefits each participating nonprofit, keeps several tons of trash from our waste stream, and helps ensure that our roadsides are free from bottle and can litter. So please call your favorite nonprofit and sign up for a slot or two! The Chedemption “Baggettes” could also use your help with the weekly task of loading boxes and bags for transport to Chandlers Wharf every Thursday at 7:45 a.m. Meet us at the transfer station. J uly is the height of summer, and all island visitors hit the wharf planning to cram as many summer memories as possible into their vacation time. The Islander crosses so loaded that it floats lower in the water. Barges bring SUVs stuffed with the essentials of summer recreation. The official kick-off event is the Fourth of July, and on Chebeague, it is a spectacular event. Forty years ago, before there was a Rec Center with its pool, we ran picnics at the school and set up games including a tug of war between fishermen and firemen. We had teams of six racing on the long boards donated by Thick and Thin Lumber—proprietor Don Munsey. One year Brother Ross donated little crabs for the races held on a blue tarp down at Chandlers Cove. Jonathan Komlosy, a teenager, won the beautiful legs contest (Banu was the judge). There will be countless new memories forged this year. Given the turmoil of our present government, it is good to remember that the Fourth of July honors the Declaration of Independence, the radical foundation document of our nation. Every citizen should read that document annually. We will be celebrating our first Fourth out at the farm and hope to create memories there that

In June, the voters of Chebeague Island approved funding for renovating our island school and we lost another of the great bedrock mothers of our community: Joan Robinson. Unfortunately, we have lost a steady flow of these wonderful mothers in the past few months. Once again we propose the one percent for art in school construction be used to construct a tribute to all the wonderful mothers in our community who have made the Chebeague Community School the core of family on our island. match our cherished memories here on Chebeague. Paula’s mother, Mary Mason, the island’s oldest year- round resident, will be spending the Fourth at the Island Commons as she recuperates from her recent fall. First, we want to thank the wonderful Chebeague Rescue and CTC crew who responded and transported Mary to the hospital. Next, we are forever grateful to Amy and Vicky for helping us make Mary’s transitional move to the farm easier. Let us join the chorus that appreciates the wonderful social services here on Chebeague. Ginny Ballard had been a constant support for our family as we cope with aging.
