3rd Grade Math Scope & Sequence

Differentiation in Action

Vocabulary : In preparation for analyzing and comparing shapes, explicitly teach the word attributes at the beginning of the topic so that students are familiar with it when they begin analyzing and comparing shapes. Have the word visible for the entire class to see throughout the topic and reward when the word is used by students. Attributes could be the word of the topic and the teacher can use it as often as possible to model for students. Which One Doesn’t Belong: Pairs of students are provided with sets of four numbers, equations, expressions, graphs, or geometric fgures. They must decide together how to group the sets so that three of the items ft within a category they have created and one does not. Both partners should be prepared to explain to a different group how they agreed on a category and justify which item did not ft. Have students complete Enrichment 15-4 using the routine above. After the sheet is completed the pairs of students would create their own Which One Doesn't Belong sheet.

STEM Project: Forces and Motion

Strand: Force Affects Motion Standard 3.3.1: Plan and carry out investigations that provide evidence of the effects of balanced and unbalanced forces on the motion of an object. Emphasize investigations where only one variable is tested at a time. Examples could include an unbalanced force on one side of a ball causing it to move and balanced forces pushing on a box from both sides producing no movement.
