American Pharoah ran the fastest final quarter-mile (24.32 seconds, or 24⅕ when converted to the traditional fifths of a second for comparison purposes) of any Triple Crown-winning Belmont Stakes. The next two fastest final quarters were 24⅗ each (Gallant Fox in 1930 and Count Fleet, who won the Belmont by 25 lengths, in 1943). Secretariat’s legendary 31-length win in the 1973 Belmont recorded the fourth fastest final quarter, 25 flat. Thoroughbred Racing Commentary

as American Pharoah bounded into the stretch amid a deafening roar, the memories of the gritty Affirmed, the speedy Seattle Slew (1977) and that tremendous machine Secretariat (1973) were summoned from backside to grandstand, and rightfully so. ~ ~ Nytimes.com , June 6, after the Belmont Stakes

“ Raise your hand if you had scat daddy in your pool to become the next coming of storm cat or a.p. indy in the breeding world. It’s unbelievable how versatile and prolific his winning offspring have become ” DRF.com

i will admit to having a soft spot for scat daddy-- andmy liking for him isn’t just sentimental. i believe he has a very bright future, based on his established ability to upgrade his mares. the blood-horse lists his average earnings index as 1.77, with his mares’ comparable index lagging behind at 1.54. ...it is going to be fascinating to see whether he can do even better over the next few years, when he will be represented by crops sired at $30,000 and $35,000. i’ll be disappointed if he doesn’t.
