Table of Contents A B C D E F H I J K L List of Appendices G 6.0 PROCEDURES ELEVATED TEMPERATURE AND HUMIDITY ENVIRONMENTS PROCEDURES 6.1 All supervisors and employees shall do the following to the extent practicable: A. Ensure effective communication by voice, observation, or electronic means is maintained so that employees at the work site can contact their supervisor when necessary. B. Hold pre-shift meetings before the commencement of work to review the high-heat procedures, encourage employees to drink plenty of water, and remind employees of their right to take a cool-down rest when necessary. C. Observe employees for alertness and signs or symptoms of heat-related illness. The supervisor or designee shall observe/monitor their employees/co-workers D. Utilize a buddy system when practicable. E. Maintain regular communication with employee working alone (e.g. radio or cellular phone). F. Remind employees throughout the work shift to drink plenty of water. 6.2 Drinking Water Sufficient quantity of potable drinking water will be provided and made accessible to employees. At least one quart of water per employee per hour will be available. Water can be found at the following locations: Service Center Patton Ave (Water, Ice and Electrolytes) Water Resources Operation Center (Water, Ice and Electrolytes) 6.3 Procedures for Responding to a Heat-Related Illness A. Supervisors will respond to heat-related illness in a quick and safe manner. The table below outlines the potential types of heat-related illnesses, signs and symptoms and specific first aid and emergency procedures. The information should be present at all work sites where work activities are conducted. B. Employees experiencing signs and symptoms of a heat-related illness are to cease work and report their condition to their supervisor. Employees showing signs or demonstrating symptoms of heat-related illness are to be relieved from duty and provided sufficient means to reduce body temperature. Employees experiencing sunburn, heat rash or heat cramps will be
