Appendix Document: Equal Employment Opportunity Definitions Effective Date: 02-01-2021 Revisions: 1 Pages: 2 Policies Referenced: B-4, B-5, B-9, G-4, H-2, H-10, I-1 It is the policy of the City of Greensboro to attract and retain the most suitable individual for each position. To this end, no person shall be refused employment, denied promotion or assignment, discharged or otherwise discriminated against or given preference in any aspect of the employment relationship on the basis of age, color, ethnicity, familial status, gender or sex, gender expression, gender identity, genetic information, hair texture and hairstyle commonly associated with national origin or race, marital status, mental or physical disability, military status, national origin, political affiliation, race, religion, sexual orientation or any other non-job related factor, except when certain physical and mental requirements are Bona-fide Occupational Qualifications (BFOQ). 1. Age - The City prohibits treating individuals who are age forty (40) or older less favorably because of age. 2. Color - The City prohibits treating individuals less favorably because of skin color complexion. 3. Ethnicity - The City prohibits treating individuals less favorably because of membership in a social group that shares a common and distinctive culture, history, religion or language. 4. Familial Status - The City prohibits treating individuals less favorably who are the parent or guardian to one or more persons who have not attained the age of eighteen (18) years. 5. Gender or Sex - The City prohibits treating individuals less favorably because of the individuals’ status as female, male, transgender or other designation. 6. Gender Expression - The City prohibits treating individuals less favorably because of the expression of the individuals’ gender identity. Gender is expressed through one’s clothing, hair style, voice or body characteristics. An individual’s gender expression may or may not conform to the birth-assigned gender or sex. 7. Gender Identity - The City prohibits treating individuals less favorably because of the individual’s personal sense of gender or sex.
