The deadline for submissions for the October issue is noon on September 20. Advertising rates are as follows: full page, $70, ½ page, $35; ¼ page, $20; 4-line classified, $5; 6 to 8 line classified, $10. ISLAND HANDYMAN “No Job is Too Small” Jeff Wescott Cover Thanks to all the non-profit organization volunteers who helped during their “Chedemption Week”. Here Jenny Hackle is taking a turn helping out in support of Kids Place. The Council divides the year-round earnings equally among all the non- profits who are willing to do a week. The other 43 weeks of the year are covered by the Council with Annie Thaxter and her volunteer team doing this huge job! Getting the returnables out of the waste stream is so important. Everyone can help. Please talk with Annie and offer to help with this important, community, effort. About the Calendar The Calendar is published monthly by the Chebeague Island Council. It is available on-line at Chebeague Island News (www.chebeague.org) or www. chebeagueislandcalendar.com and mailed to every occupied residence on the island. The Calendar welcomes submissions from its readers, including letters and thank you notes, but it cannot publish anything that is political in nature, libelous, or obscene. All submissions should include the author’s name and contact information. Without exception, the deadline for submissions is noon on the 20 th day of the month preceding publication. Submissions and ad copy may be mailed (PO Box 12), left at the Council office (247 South Road) or emailed (cheabeagueislandcouncil@gmail.com) and sent as attachments (.doc; no pdfs) or included in the body of the text. Images and photographs should be sent in a .jpg, .jpeg, or .rtf format. Please do not use the old email address at as this is an inactive account. As a courtesy and space permitting, island nonprofits are given up to a free half page each month to publish their news. Any such submissions exceeding a half page will be charged at the usual rate. All submissions become the property of the Chebeague Island Council, which reserves the right to edit them for length and clarity. Submissions that are not time sensitive may be held until there is enough space to publish them. Additional information about submissions is available at www.chebeagueislandcalendar.com.

You don’t have to move to the Commons to enjoy the top-notch care of our team of pros…they’ll come to you! The Chebeague Cares team, all of whom are licensed caregivers, is under the direction of Stephanie Smith. We call her our “Navigator,” because she is charting new territory for the Commons’ in-home programs. The list of her fans is rapidly growing. (Meet Stephanie and it’s hard not to immediately like her.) Just ask islander Sylvia Ross, shown above with Stephanie. Like most of you, Syl loves being in her own home and that’s where she wants to stay. Perfectly capable of most everyday tasks, what she really missed was the independence of her own wheels and the easy companionship of friends a short drive away. Stephanie was just a phone call away, and now they’re on the move three days a week, exploring the island, enjoying a picnic lunch, visiting with friends and family. As Sylvia recently said, “I suppose I could ask Stephanie to tidy up and mop the floor, but what fun would that be? I’d much rather head to the beach or enjoy my gardens…and she’s such good company!” What would make your life easier? We may be able to make it happen! Reach out to our care navigator, Stephanie Smith, and start the conversation. Call 207-846-5610 or email navigator@islandcommons.com. We’re 0n the Move! Event Update: We were so looking forward to seeing you all at our Harvest Party this September, but once again we’ve had to cancel this event in order to keep our staff and residents safe. Thanks for understanding! In Memory: The staff and residents of the Commons mourn the death of Ginny Ballard , whose care began when our doors opened, and whose compassion was unceasing for more than two decades. Gin was our PA, friend and guardian angel, and for that we will be forever grateful. Book Group returning to weekly format on September 12, 2021 In person at the Library and via Zoom at 6 PM We’ll begin with a deeper dive into one of our summer books: Dancing in God’s Earthquake: The Coming Transformation of Religion by Rabbi Arthur Ocean Waskow

Here is a book of deep wisdom from a prophetic rabbi who has for fifty years worked to promote a progressive spirit of renewal that connects Jews, Christians, and people of other faiths. We all experience earthquakes in our lives--social, personal, religious. From those earthquakes renewal and new life can come forth if we learn to dance in the midst of the earthquake. –Amazon September 12 th , 6 PM in person at the Library and Via Zoom: meeting # 899 7984 6008 / password: 20152020 EVERYONE IS INVITED TO ATTEND FMI: gjbrown58a@gmail.com

CHEBEAGUE TRANSPORTATION COMPANY News from CTC!

Summer Office Hours Monday - Friday 9am - 4pm

What to expect when travelling with CTC

Why are masks re- quired when board- ing the ferry? With mandates requir- ing masks no longer in effect in many situa- tions, our ferry and bus crews have been getting a lot of questions (and, unfortunately, some hostility) about our mask policies. Why we are requiring masks when boarding the fer- ry, when inside the ferry, and aboard the bus? Federal law continues to re- quire all people, re- gardless of vaccination status, to wear masks on public transporta- tion and at transporta- tion hubs. Refusing to comply constitutes a violation of the law. Once onboard the ferry, when in open spaces such as the bow, stern and upper deck, people may remove their masks. When disembarking, however, passengers must again wear masks. Please contact our office with questions about these policies.

parking available on a space-available basis. Day parkers must leave the lot before 5:30 p.m. or they will be towed. At the Wharf —Once the bus has parked, passengers should unload their belongings and carry items to the float. Carts are available. Please don’t block the travel lane on the wharf with freight or large groups. Arriving pas- sengers will need space to exit. Our boat crew will load your freight on the ferry. Form a line along the wharf rail- ing and wait for a deckhand to start ticket collection for boarding. Our fer- ries have capacities in excess of 100 passengers, so we rarely have to make two trips. On the Ferry —Tickets must be pur- chased in advance, either at our online store or through our office. Passengers with tickets in hand may board the ferry upon the deckhand’s instructions. Online purchases will be confirmed by the deckhand before boarding. Wheth- er you’ve lived here and used our ferry for 90 years, or this is your first time travelling with us, the expectation is the same… you need a ticket before boarding. (We no longer collect tickets while underway.) The faster we can board, the sooner you will reach your destination!

While many of our seasonal passengers know the drill by heart (parking lot, baggage, bus, unloading, float, tickets, ferry, arrival), some first-time travelers (as well as those returning after an absence) might find this a useful re- minder about this curious routine. Route 1/Bus service —This satellite lot is where seasonal or short-term visitors to Chebeague park and is ser- viced by a shuttle bus to the Cousins Island Wharf. CTC busses leave one half-hour prior to the scheduled ferry departure time. Passengers should arrive at least 15 minutes before the bus departs to allow time to purchase parking tickets and load freight on the bus. Our drivers are there to help facili- tate loading and unloading of freight. They are not baggage handlers and may not lift anything over 50 pounds. Capacity for luggage and freight on our buses is very limited, especially during peak travel times. Travelers with mul- tiple bags or freight are encouraged to use Casco Bay Lines’ excellent service to Chebeague, or arrive early enough to deposit gear at the wharf on Cousins Island and return to park at Route 1. Cousins Island lot —Our “lower lot” is strictly reserved for year-round parking pass holders with very limited day

Job Opportunities CTC has openings for part time bus driv- ers and parking lot attendants ! Contact our office for more details and to apply. and will run dur- ing school holi- days and school cancellation days (weather permit- ting). The CTC bus does not meet the school boats. Weekday School Boats Start 9/1 CTC will begin its service to carry school children on 9/1—the first day of school. The morning boat will leave Chebeague at 7:05 AM. The afternoon boat will leave Cousins Island at 3:05 PM. The service is weekdays only

Did you Know…

CTC is one of a very few privately-run ferry companies in the US. Except for emergency grants such as the PPP loans, we do not qualify for most transporta- tion assistance and receive no subsidies from any local, state or federal govern- ment. Most ferry companies receive up to 50% of funding for operations from federal and state grants and up to 100% for capital projects, such as new boat construction! CTC continues to provide emergency transport on and off of the Island at no cost to the Town or patients, just as we’ve done for decades. The cost to CTC to pro- vide this service to our community averages around $25,000 per year. CTC works with the Chebeague Island Council to provide free transportation to people receiving on-going medical treatment, such as physical therapy or chemo- therapy. Please contact the Council for more information. CTC provides free parking and ferry transportation when funerals or memorial services are held on Chebeague or elsewhere for someone who is to be interred on Chebeague.

Thank You I’d like to add my thanks to that of so many others for the incredible emergency care we are fortunate to have on the island. After a fall by one of my houseguests this week, the response by the Rescue Team was swift, professional and caring. My friend is doing well and very grateful to the team. As most of us know, and as I now do firsthand, we are in good hands here on the island. Many thanks to the whole team, Joanie Dayton

Raymond Family Foundation Matching Grant

In August, we announced that the Raymond Family Foundation has awarded the Chebeague Island Historical Society, founded in 1984, a $10,000 matching grant to further its mission. This matching grant is in addition to a very generous grant from the Foundation that was used to upgrade our heating sys- tems and make structural improvements to the building. The cost of the improve- ments needed exceeded the original grant amount. We

hope to use funds from the matching grant to cover the balance. Our target date for raising the matching funds is Sep- tember 30th. As of August 20th, we have raised $3,500 toward our $10,000 goal.
