something that had a low tail swing radius,” he continues. “So this machine really helps us in tight areas. If we’re in alleys, we can configure with our trench boxes, and it’s easy to get around with this style of machine.” The 320E LRR is easy to maneuver, yet powerful enough to handle tough jobs. Lift capacity has been improved by five percent on the standard machine and up to 20 percent on the Heavy Lift configuration. With its 6’7” tail swing, the 320E LRR works efficiently in tight spaces. A lower-emissions engine boosts fuel efficiency, while other new features enhance safety and productivity, cut service time and reduce operating costs. Rio utilizes the 320E LRR excavator for digging to deeper depths — an average depth is 16 feet — and install eight-inch water mains. Operators use a 36-inch bucket to dig trenches for main water lines, and a 24-inch bucket for the smaller water line installations. Schaeffer says there is a lot to like about the 320E LRR excavator. “It comes with a lot of different extras on it,” he says. “The backup camera is something I didn’t think we really needed, but it has been a big asset. And the linkage we added to quickly switch the buckets — that has been a real performance booster for us. “We do a lot of backfilling and use the machine in tight areas, and the tight swing radius has been a big plus for us. “It’s very smooth, but it also has a real quick radius on it, too, so that helps with our operators get in and out of the holes,” Schaeffer adds. “Swing times are critical for us. W orking primarily as a utility subcontractor installing water lines and sanitary drains, Rio LLC often finds itself working in tight quarters. The Brighton, Colo., contractor favors a Cat ® 320E LRR Hydraulic Excavator for confined settings such as alleys, streets and yards. “When we were looking at the 320E excavator, our Contractor favors hydraulic excavator for efficiency, maneuverability

operation, and plenty of power for what we do.” Another plus is the excellent lift capacity, which enables Rio operators to place larger trench boxes, pipe and structures. “We can go as high as 72-inch reinforced concrete pipe, so we just have to position the excavator tighter to the trench,” Schaeffer says. “One of the reasons we went to the larger excavator was that it’s a pretty universal machine for the type of work that we do.”

What he likes about his Cat Dealer “These Cat machines are like Cadillacs. The newer ones can do everything, but you have to know how to operate them,” says Owen Schaeffer, owner of Rio LLC. “So a representative from our Cat dealer comes out and helps our operators if they have questions. “A representative from Wagner Equipment works with them to demonstrate different things that the machine will do. Rather than reading it out of the book, that’s huge for our guys to be able to learn hands on. A lot of times you miss things that you could be using, and Wagner is very helpful in that regard. “ What he likes about Cat equipment “This machine (the 320EL RR Hydraulic Excavator) is a good fit for us, and the fuel consumption is very good for our needs,” Schaeffer says. “It has the capability to operate at the high end or the middle end of the fuel consumption spectrum, so depending on what we are working on, we can adjust it — that’s something the support team from Wagner helped us work out.”

EASY TO TRANSPORT A factor in the selection of the 320E LRR excavator is the ability to transport the machine. Given its size, a special permit isn’t required for transporting from one jobsite to another. “We figured we could get it around town easier,” Schaeffer says. “We still have curfews and other restrictions in Colorado, but one of the things we looked at was the weight of the machine and the ease of getting it in and out of jobsites — so that’s a big plus for us.” When it comes to buying equipment, Rio prefers to lease new Cat machines and purchase them at the end of the lease period. “We went through Cat Financial on this one,” Schaeffer says of the 320E LRR excavator. “We’ve typically started with new machines for

a couple reasons. One, you know they stand up. We know that they have good warranties on them. That keeps them in good running shape, and we’re also looking at the financial return at the end of the lease period.” Rio has a Customer Support Agreement with its Cat dealer, Wagner Equipment Co., wherein Wagner technicians perform scheduled maintenance and oil changes. Rio also utilizes Cat Product Link ™ to receive accurate, timely and

useful information about the location, utilization and condition of its equipment. “We can monitor how a particular machine is doing,” Schaefer says. “Over the years, I have found that it’s very important to stay on top of scheduled maintenance in order to prolong machine life. That’s what we are hoping for on this machine (the 320E), and Wagner has been a big plus in that regard.”

Cat ® M-Series Small Wheel Loader Have New Options, Operator Features & Improved Fuel Efficiency

T he new Cat ® M-Series Small Wheel Loaders — 926M, 930M and 938M— build on the success of K-Series predecessor models — 924K, 930K and 938K — with engineering refinements that include new engines meeting Tier 4 Final emission standards and new options and features that further enhance value, operator comfort and safety. Innovative features introduced with the K-Series carry over to the new M-Series family. With the M-Series introduction, the nomenclature for the smallest model in the family changes from 924 to 926, reflecting the increased capabilities of the new model, compared with those of the 924H and 924Hz. All three new models have increased engine power and higher tip loads for improved performance. Efficient Drive Train/Selectable Power Modes A new Cat C7.1 ACERT™ engine powers the three new M-Series wheel loaders and has a clean emissions module designed to require no operator intervention and causing no disruption of work cycles. The module uses a fit-for-life diesel particulate filter (DPF) and a selective catalytic reduction system, which requires only the addition of diesel exhaust fluid. Regeneration of the DPF occurs passively at a low temperature. The stepless, four-range, electronically controlled, intelligent hydrostatic drive system has been further enhanced to include operator selected power train modes including a conventional Hystat mode with aggressive engine braking, refined Torque Converter mode allowing the machine to free wheel down hills and around grades, and an Ice mode setting tuned to maximize control in slippery underfoot conditions. Testing shows that the Torque Converter mode can save up to 5 percent additional fuel in load-and-carry applications and is the factory default setting. M-Series models are efficiently powerful and offer hybrid-type fuel savings by using new power modes, selected via the soft touch button panel: Standard mode offers the same power as K-Series models in ranges 1, 2 and 3 and features a Power-By-Range logic that boosts the available power in range 4 for improved roading speed on uphill grades. In this mode, the engine runs at a lower maximum speed (1,600 rpm versus 1,800-rpm high idle) with no compromise in peak ground speed. The 200-rpm reduction in engine speed is a key enabler to additional fuel savings, compared with K-Series models. Testing shows up to 5 percent fuel savings in composite-work cycles and up to 10 percent fuel savings in specific applications, such as roading, long load-and- carry applications, and snow clearing. The lower 926M Replaces 924K

maximum engine speed also significantly reduces in-cab sound levels. Performance mode boosts engine speed to 1,800 rpm to achieve maximum engine power in all speed ranges. More power is available for multi-function work, and the resulting increases in hydraulic speed and power allow higher production. Cat Product Link™ standard The Caterpillar enterprise telematics solution enables customers, dealers, and enterprise users to determine the location, operation and condition of connected Cat products. Product Link helps lower owning and operating costs, and the system offers daily operations support and information for business decisions. Through the solution’s detailed asset management, customers can see fuel status, work time versus idle time, and upcoming service needs. Included is a three-year subscription to the web-based VisionLink ® interface, via cellular or satellite connection, for generating summary reports that assist in effective fleet management. New Generation II Loader Linkage/Smooth Hydraulics The Caterpillar patented, Generation II Optimized Z-bar loader linkage on the M-Series models delivers the performance and breakout forces of a traditional Z-bar linkage with the parallelism and load-handling capability of a tool carrier. The Generation II lift-arm design, launched with late-model K-Series machines, enhances overall forward visibility, and the redesigned torque tube on standard lift linkages maximizes visibility when the linkage is above the level-arm position. Higher tipping load ratings

for the M-Series small wheel loader models, versus the K-Series, also allow the new models to comfortably handle heavier payloads. Electro-hydraulic controls, combined with independent, dedicated, load-sensing variable- displacement pumps for the implement and the steering circuits carry over from the K-Series. The M-Series hydraulic system enhances multifunction performance and allows features such as fine- mode control for fork and material-handling work, push-button programming of lift, tilt and lower kick-outs, and electronic dampening at cylinder- end stroke and kick out positions. Controls also allow a new feature, Perfect Parallelism, which uses input from rotary sensors in the linkage to provide level lift with ± 2-degree accuracy for improved site lines to fork tips and improved performance in material handling applications. Operator safety and customization The M-Series small wheel loaders also introduce several new optional features designed to enhance productivity, operator safety and serviceability. An available LED light package includes front and rear LED auxiliary work lights,

engine-bay LED lights to illuminate routine service points, such as oil and coolant levels, and lighting to illuminate the fuel area. A new Object Detection System is available that uses radar and provides both visual and audible alarms to warn the operator of objects close to the rear of the machine. The class-leading operator station introduced with K-Series models is further refined to ensure all-day comfort and safety for the operator. Larger external mirrors feature a lower parabolic section that allows visibility to the rear tires at ground level, improving safety when working around trenches and when loading machines on trailers. Operators also can customize M-Series controls by using the new, redesigned secondary display, which is standard on European models. The secondary display is now larger, providing more customization and information. New features available through the secondary display include coded start and operator profiles, application profiles, service-mode and preventive maintenance alerts, independent flow adjustment for third and fourth hydraulic functions, directional-shift response, ride-control activation speed, automatic-lubrication intervals, bucket- float activation, feather-catch mode, rack snubbing, multiple camera inputs, Perfect Parallelism, diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) level and remaining time until fuel fill. Serviceability Servicing the new M-Series small wheel loaders is facilitated with Product Link, which allows Service Mode and Preventive Maintenance Alerts features for tracking scheduled maintenance. An optional Integrated Auto-lube system allows automatic greasing of linkage pin joints, including bucket pins, articulation hitch, steering cylinders and rear axle trunnions. The DEF tank is easily accessible on the right side of the machine. M-Series models also are compatible with bio-fuel blends up to B20. Segment-specific solutions, developed for K-Series models, remain available for the M-Series models to enhance overall versatility. The Aggregate Handler solution includes additional counterweight for greater stability, long-life Performance Series buckets and optional axle- and gear-box breathers for negotiating settling ponds. The Waste Handler incorporates a range of machine guarding and cab filtration options to protect both the machine and operator, along with buckets that are designed for waste- and scrap-handling. direction, as well as its main-fall (fore/aft) direction, eliminating guesswork and allowing operators to grade with assurance. Slope Assist facilitates achieving the required main-fall by automatically maintaining pre- established blade angles. Consistent grades are attained more quickly with the system, fill materials are conserved, and less-experienced operators are more productive. The system is part of the Cat AccuGrade™ Ready attachment, allowing the system to be easily upgraded to 3D capability. Control, comfort, durability The Eco Mode system for the new track-type tractors is designed to improve fuel economy up to 20 percent by reducing engine speed in less- demanding conditions. Two settings — Forward/ Reverse or Reverse Only — are selected via the rotary throttle, and once set, Eco Mode controls engine speed at optimum levels, delivering maximum speed and power when required. The operator-selected Stable Blade feature complements the operator’s blade-control input, resulting in finer control and more consistent grades. Complementing Stable Blade is the available Power Pitch feature that allows the operator to adjust blade pitch hydraulically on the go— more aggressive forward angles for loading the blade, less-severe rearward angles to carry the load. With respective power ratings of 80, 92, and 104 horsepower, the new models all use the Cat C4.4 ACERT™ engine, which meets the most stringent emissions standards with only the Cat NOx Reduction System (cooled exhaust gas recirculation), maintenance-free diesel oxidation catalyst, and selective catalytic reduction system. Precision blade control for grading applications remains a primary design objective for K2 models, which feature new systems that contribute significantly to increased productivity and reduced operator fatigue. Automatic Traction Control, new for the Efficient grading

K2 models, reduces track slippage when the machine encounters maximum load conditions. This feature, which does not require operator interaction as did the previous traction-control system, automatically adjusts machine operating parameters to keep the machine moving steadily and productively through the cut, minimizing the operator’s need to continually adjust the blade to prevent stalling. The net results are more consistent grades, reduced operator fatigue, and substantially improved undercarriage life. Ways to Improve 3 Undercarriage Life

D id you know that undercarriage repair and maintenance can be as much as 50 percent of your machine’s maintenance cost over the life of the machine? While undercarriage maintenance is not complicated, track machines, which have much better flotation than wheel machines, can be managed so that the undercarriage life is optimized and owning and operating costs are reduced.

Three tips can help you manage wear, maximize track life and minimize repair and maintenance costs:

Carefully match the machine to job conditions

Consider operator technique Practicing good operating techniques will increase undercarriage life. In general, it is best to avoid sharp turns, counter rotations, constant side-slope work and high-speed reverse. All of these greatly increase undercarriage wear and should be avoided whenever possible.

Conduct daily inspections Good maintenance practices, along with proper operating techniques, significantly reduce wear and tear on any undercarriage system. Daily machine walk-around inspections are essential for identifying irregularities in machine appearance, possible leaks, loose hardware and improperly tensioned tracks. Proper track tension is critical to all undercarriage styles. In general, tracks that are too tight can accelerate wear and compromise seal integrity; tracks that are too loose can cause unnecessary wear on track frames. The undercarriage should be cleaned out every day, and even more often when material packing is a factor. Additionally, Wagner Equipment Co. can perform a Custom Track Service (CTS) inspection on any Cat track machine.

Compact machine selection and configuration play big roles in the life of an undercarriage system. For example, a track machine configured with a narrow shoe in highly abrasive, wet conditions will not provide adequate flotation. This situation will increase the amount of material circulating through the undercarriage system and accelerate wear on all undercarriage components. In this case, a wider track shoe will provide better system wear life. An example for a rubber track machine would be using a Multi Terrain Loader in an application where the underfoot conditions consist of small aggregate that can get stuck in the undercarriage system, which consists primarily of rubber. In this case, a compact track loader with a steel-embedded rubber track along with steel components would be a better match.

New F2 Series Backhoe Loaders Have Fuel-Efficient U.S. EPA TIER 4 Final ENGINES, New Operator’s Station & Hydraulic Refinements

T he new F2 Series Cat ® Backhoe Loaders include the 416F2, 420F2, 430F2, and a model new to the range, the 415F2. The new F2 Series center-pivot models build on the solid performance, reliability, and durability of their F Series predecessors with engines that meet Tier 4 Final emissions standards, new operator’s station, and added features and options that further enhance performance and operator productivity. The 420F2 and 430F2 continue to be available with both single-tilt and Integrated Tool Carrier (IT) front linkage, and four-wheel drive is standard for the 430F2 and available for other models. The 415F2 uses a Cat C3.4B engine, rated at 68 net horsepower and the 416F2, 420F2, and 430F2 use the Cat C4.4 ACERT™ engine, with net-horsepower ratings of 87, 93, and 108, respectively. The 415F2 does not require diesel exhaust fluid, a convenience for buyers such as rental firms and governmental agencies. All of the new F2 Series models have an extremely powerful implement hydraulic system, which uses a load-sensing, variable- displacement piston pump that provides full

FOPS operator’s station has been modified to accommodate flat glass, which maintains excellent visibility, and a new rear window design improves trench sight lines. An additional third step on the left side facilitates access to the operator’s station. In-cab sound levels have been reduced significantly, from 80 dB(A) to 74 dB(A), and the new HVAC system now has a recirculation control for greater control of the in-cab environment. An added roof cap reduces heat infiltration, and is designed for added visibility with the higher lift heights of the F Series models. Visibility enhancements also include repositioning the exhaust stack to align with the cab structure for improved sight lines to the bucket corners. A new gauge cluster includes a large LCD screen, and a new pantograph windshield wiper

lifting and digging forces at all engine speeds and matches hydraulic flow to work demands for highly efficient operation. Pilot-operated joystick controls with in-cab pattern changers are standard on the 420F2 and 430F2. These controls are optional on the 415F2 and 416F2, which come standard with mechanical controls. All new models can also be equipped with auxiliary hydraulics, including a third-function loader valve, six-function backhoe valve, and related lines. 420F2 IT and 430F2 IT machines have a standard hydraulic loader quick coupler. New for the IT models are twist-to-connect hydraulic quick disconnect fittings that can be connected under pressure. All models feature redesigned hose routing for extendible sticks, adding to overall reliability and durability.

increases coverage by more than 40 percent. Technical enhancements for the new operator’s station include an available keypad security system, hands-free communication system, and the satellite- and cellular-based Product Link™ systems. The optional security system is a self-contained immobilizer type that disables the engine, transmission, and hydraulic system until a valid pass-code is entered on the keypad. Additional design details include a differential-lock control now positioned on the loader control, dual directional-shift controls for IT models (steering column and joystick controller), and larger fenders that keep the cab glass cleaner in muddy conditions. Single Tilt 420F2 and 430F2 machines now have single lever loader controls with an integral roller switch for auxiliary functions like M/P buckets.

420F2/430F2 Features New for the 420F2 and 430F2 is an available six-speed Auto-Shift transmission, which also is available with a lock-up torque converter for direct-drive efficiency in 5th and 6th gears, providing a top speed of 25 mph and optimum fuel economy. These models also feature a standard Economy Mode that adjusts engine speed and hydraulic-pump displacement for optimum performance and fuel efficiency. Up-to-date and accurate records allow machine owners and operators to track progress, which can be used to make adjustments for increased productivity. Additionally, the following loading practices can improve operator efficiency. • Pay attention to the distance between the machine and the material when loading. Traveling longer distances than needed

increases completion time and can accelerate wear on tracks and tires.

• Be aware of loading limits. Overloading the machine could have a negative impact on maintenance intervals, lead to downtime or increase equipment wear.

Get creative with your equipment Work tools improve machine versatility

so operators can complete more jobs with fewer machines. Using machines and attachments for multiple purposes or in unique applications can help optimize the equipment even further. For example, a mulcher can be used to clear shooting lanes in a deer hunting reserve, which opens the paths for hunters and increases equipment productivity. Here are some other examples: • Augers are used for drilling, but they can also be used to screw specialty bits into concrete or asphalt for manholes and valve access. They can drill anchors for a stronger foundation, such as soil stabilization in hill sides. Augers have even been used to power stirring devices for manure and slurry retention ponds. • Hammers can be equipped with plates, instead of pointed tools, for compacting. Stick-mounted hammers can be used overhead for removing rock faces or for scaling ceilings in caverns and tunnels. • Cold planers are used to profile or texture asphalt and concrete roadways, but they can also remove large numbers of stumps in special applications such as Christmas tree farms. In dairy applications, a cold planer mounted to a skid steer loader can texture concrete to keep the cows from slipping and falling in the milk parlors. Analyzing application practices can make a big difference in improving jobsite efficiency across the board. The goal is to apply equipment in unique ways that will allow machine owners and operators to get more out of their fleet, reduce wear and tear and increase overall productivity.

P roductivity is something that can always be improved upon, so it makes sense that machine owners and operators continue to look for ways to get more from their equipment. Being more mindful of how jobsite responsibilities are completed can help operators work more effectively. We’ve identified three areas in which application practices can be evaluated to improve jobsite strategy, extend equipment lifecycles and increase efficiency.

and minimizes wear and tear on the machine. • In agriculture, some job tasks require moving heavier materials like manure. In this case, select a bucket with less capacity to maintain the proper balance of breakout force, bucket loading time and job site travel speed. • In construction, it’s more efficient to incorporate a quick coupler onto a loader arm than to use forks on the front of a bucket. By removing the bucket, and installing a set of forks, construction operators can safely lift a heavier load, improve jobsite visibility and increase machine stability at higher ground speeds. • It’s common for operators to break concrete using the bucket on an excavator or backhoe loader. Adding a hydraulic hammer is much more productive and does less damage to the machine.

Anticipate equipment needs Job requirements can differ by a number of factors including, but not limited to, project type, location, application and industry. It’s important to outline tasks and identify which machine type, size and configuration is needed before starting any work. Each industry generally has a standard set of equipment that’s required, but sometimes, the same machine can be used across a variety of job tasks for improved productivity. Here are some examples: • Landscaping machines, like compact track loaders or multi terrain loaders, can also be used for snow and ice management. Purchasing a set of snow tracks can greatly improve performance because track-tread patterns meant for soil do not work as well in snow. Additionally, a skid steer loader could probably remove a tree stump, but replacing the bucket with a stump grinder makes quick work of the job, does less damage to the site

A Safe Operation Safety tips for agriculture Workers F or the general public, the word “farm” summons images of picturesque scenery and herds of roaming animals, but those who work on farms, ranches, feed lots and dairies understand that the real-life scene isn’t quite that simple, nor nearly as safe, as outsiders might think. In fact, farming can be downright dangerous — something farm safety experts have known for many years. Fortunately, steps can be taken to make the farm scene safer — and closer to the idyllic image in the collective mind of the public. 1 Wear seat belts. Operators of farm machinery are rarely traveling at high speeds, and traffic is limited. There are other working machines, however, and equipment must sometimes use or cross public roads. It’s important to remember — seat belts do much more than protect the operator in the event of a collision. They also keep workers inside the cab’s rollover protection structure (ROPS). Underfoot conditions are often unstable, and the risk of an operator encountering a berm, ravine or a drop- off from a road to a drainage ditch is likely. 2 Properly enter and exit machines. Start by taking the proper approach. Always face the equipment and use the steps and rails provided by the manufacturer. Make sure the area is adequately lit, contact areas are clear and that steps and handrails are properly secured and free from mud and debris. Maintain three points of contact when mounting or dismounting. Either one hand and two feet, or two hands and one foot should be on the steps/handrail. Make sure footwear is clean and hands are free of tools or supplies that could encumber the process. 3 Make the shop safe. Repairing equipment requires caution. Turning off equipment should be obvious, but have you put all safety locks in place? Keep guards and shields on power equipment — they are installed for a reason. Keep the shop clean, too. An organized workplace makes it easy to find the right tools, prevents heavy objects from falling, and a clean

floor helps you avoid slips and falls. Don’t forget – eye protection is a must. 4 Handle grain properly. Automation makes it much easier to work with grain than in the past, but the equipment and storage structures can be hazardous. Make your farm safer by starting simple. Don’t allow workers to wear loose, unbuttoned or torn clothing. Lock entrances to grain handling areas and use labels on grain bins to warn of

entrapment hazards. Install ladders inside bins and notify workers they should not enter bins that are being loaded or unloaded. 5 Beware of the bunker silo. Take steps to ensure bunker silos don’t collapse on machines or workers. Inspect the silo walls for cracks and foundation problems before harvesting. If a problem is ignored, the weight of new materials could lead damaged walls to crumble outward. Just as dangerous are instances when silage props up faulty walls, only to have them collapse inward when material is removed. 6 No free rides. Falls from equipment by operators and farmhands are some of the most frequent causes of injury. Make sure workers who are approved to ride wear slip-resistant shoes or boots. Keep platforms, footplates and steps clear of mud, manure and other debris; make sure the platform is free of tools, gloves and loose objects. Set the brakes once you’ve reached your destination. 7 Wear the proper clothing. When it comes to farming, keep it tight. Loose clothing can get caught in machinery, especially when working around augers or implements. Wear the proper footwear, not only to protect feet from falling objects, but to prevent falls. Farms can be slippery places, and boots with good traction are the first line of defense. Also, make sure the boots are high enough to protect your ankles. Gloves and long pants prevent cuts and scratches. 8 Make safe attachment changes. Understand the warning labels pertaining to the forks, buckets and other work tools on your farm. Know the maximum operating capacities and specifications of the host machine and lift capacity restrictions. Also, make sure you’re aware of work tool clearance when operating near obstacles, including those that are overhead, such as tree branches and power

lines. Before making a work tool change, check the hydraulic hoses and fittings on both the tool and the host machine. 9 Conduct pre-shift walk around inspections These inspections only take a few minutes and they are one of the best ways to detect small problems before they become serious. Follow walk-around guidelines in the OMMs, which should be kept on machines. Supervisors must allow time for a thorough evaluation. Start by making sure the machine is clean, which means no grease, oil or hydraulic fluid on the steps, railings or controls. Keep windows clean inside and out for clear visibility. On the outside, check for accumulating debris — such as hay, straw and grains — that could be susceptible to fire. Besides debris, you’re looking for leaks, cuts, cracks, rubbing or excessive wear. Use your senses: sight, smell, hearing and touch. Have your operators do a walk-around any time they get off the machines and again at the end of a shift. Pass all relevant information to other operators and a supervisor. 10 Establish a culture of safety and a commitment to training. Prepare a safety manual or safety sheet for the specific conditions found in your operation. Ensure all equipment is used for its intended purposes and forbid removal of safety guards or other protective gear. Retain material safety data sheets for fertilizers and chemicals. When appropriate, make sure instructions are translated and clearly understood by all workers. Provide regular safety training and conduct weekly training meetings. Be certain new farmhands have been trained before they start working. Give experienced operators a chance to adjust to new machines and to go through any training necessary to assure proficiency.
