THE PHYSICS OF THE ROLLER COASTER
Maximum radius
- This is determined by how much potential energy the ball can gain. More energy gained will allow the ball to circulate a larger loops. - This is measured by the set of radii mentioned above. - Error 0.4 cm (based on error while measuring radii mentioned above)
Controlled variables
Mass of the ball
- Mass = 0.1 kg - This is kept constant because it affects the potential energy and the momentum - It is kept by using the same ball that came with the set.
The distance between the release and the loop
- This is measured by a tape ruler. This is kept constant by using same number of base platforms and constant modifying the position of the track. - Length= 180 cm - The longer the distance the more energy loss can occur hence it would affect the capability of the ball to circulate a loop.
4.1 Apparatus
- 1 x Ball bearing (same mass = 0.1 kg) - 1 x 150 cm tape measure ±0.2 - 2 x 3 meters lines. - A scissor
- 10 plastic platforms - 10 x 30 cm metal rods - 1 x 40 cm metal rods - 2 x 20 cm metal rods - 10 x metal rods holder - 20 x track holders
4.2 Procedure
Part 1: Setting up the track
