Travis Dellinger returns for his fourth and final year with the Toreros ... a starter at invert in 1997, he was the team's third leading tackler with 76 (36 unassisted) ... led team in tackles vs. Azusa (11) and Drake (13) ... his 11 yard interception return for a touchdown versus Drake gave Toreros its first lead of game at 25-24 in 4th quarter -- USD went on to win 39-30; Dellinger earned PFL Defensive Player of the Week honors for his play ... in season finale, came up with two interceptions ... a steady performer, Travis gives the defense a lot of experience ... during the 1996 season he totaled 55 tackles (24 solos) to go with 5 tackles for loss, 4 pass deflections and 2 interceptions ... he led team in win over California Lutheran with 11 tackles ... he posted a team-best 14 tackles (4 solo) at Drake ... he came up with a big interception in season-finale against Dayton ... was recruited by Colorado, San Diego State and Fresno State ... from nearby Oceanside, California, he prepped at University of San Diego High School where they were league and CIF champs in 1994 ... senior year was selected 1st Team All-CIF and 1st Team All-Western League. Dan Hamann , a three-year letterman on the USD football team, returns for his fourth and final season with the Toreros ... a projected starter in 1998, he will see considerable playing time on the defensive line ... in 1997 he appeared in 7 games with starts in four contests ... he posted 3 tackles in opening win against Azusa Pacific and tallied 2 against Wagner ... missed four contests due to injury ... chose USD for its location, academics and football program ... from nearby Poway, California, Dan prepped at Rancho Bernardo High School where he lettered in football and track & field ... he was a member of the 1995 squad that went 12-1, won the Palomar League championship, and the CIF title. Mike Hartshorne enters his fourth and final season with the Toreros ... a 1997 starter on the defensive front, Mike also saw considerable playing time his first two seasons with Toreros ... a 1997 PFL All-Academic selection on defense, Mike tallied 11 tackles, 3 for losses, 1 forced fumble and 1 fumble recovery ... a key returner on defense who will add to the team's depth and experience ... very strong with excellent lower-body strength ... started two games in 1996 and finished the season with 5 tackles (3 solo), two quarterback sacks (-12 yards), two tackles for loss (-12 yards) ... in '96 opener at Chico State, Mike totaled 3 tackles and combined for 1 1/2 sacks ... he prepped at Salpointe Catholic High School in Tucson, Arizona ... he ~ttered in football all four years ... his senior team went 9-2 and were co-champs in the 5A Southern League ... he was selected First Team All-League and 2nd Team All-State ... junior year was All-Conference and the recipient of the school's student-athlete award. Kevin Hawes returns for his senior season after starting at inside linebacker in 1997 ... he started 10 contests and finished with 43 tackles (6 tackles for losses) and 1 interception (vs. Redlands) ... posted a career-best 8 tackles versus Butler, and notched 6 tackles in four other games ... his first two seasons he was slowed by injuries, first getting knocked out his freshman year with a knee injury; and in ' 96 was slowed by a stress fracture he suffered during camp ... a versatile player who can play up or down ... during his freshman campaign he appeared in four contests with 7 tackles and 1 quarterback sack ... he prepped at Jesuit High School in Sacramento, California where he earned All-City and All-League honors at linebacker ... senior year team went 12-1 and won the league championship ... he also lettered in wrestling ... was also recruited by Saint Mary's and Montana ... his father, Michael, played football at Xavier University. Matt Hawkins enters his fourth and final campaign where he will be counted on to anchor the offensive line at center ... is one of three returning starters from the 1997 squad where he saw most of his action at the guard position ... had his most consistent summer of strength & conditioning training in 1998 -- improved his squat by 50 pounds (415) during summer; increased 46% in three years ... in 1996 he started at both guard positions and even played some at center ... from Orange, California, Matt prepped at Servite College Preparatory ... in his senior year the football team went 11-4, won the Goldenwest League title and were CIF runner-ups for Division 5 schools ... he lettered both his junior and senior campaigns, also earning the Angelus Award his senior year ... his brother Jon played football at Claremont McKenna, while his brother Tom played baseball at the University of .North Carolina ... enjoys fishing as a hobby.
