Previewing the '97-98 Season

This year Head Coach Kathy Marpe enters her eighteenth season at the helm of the USO women's basketball program. As she has done the previous 17 years, Marpe is stressing to this year's squad the importance of goals and learning from past experiences. Marpe wants her players to improve upon last year's misfortunes and have more desire this season to get back to the top of the West Coast Confer– ence standings. "Our goal is to build on the effort we put in last year and learn from the experi– ences to strive to make improvements and reach another level of success this sea– son," says Marpe. "We want to continue to play a tenacious defense and keep our quick tempo offense. The key elements to winning games this year will be in how successful we our in forcing other teams to alter their style of basketball." The Toreros will have a young lineup in '97-98 with a total of eight underclassmen and only three seniors. Last year's leading scorer senior Nailah Thompson and sophomore Susie Erpelding are the two main components of this year's team and are a prime example of blending youth with experience. Thompson, who is the most experienced returner, is a two-time All WCC Honorable Mention selection. Though Thompson will be out until January with a foot injury, she should be ready for con– ference play that begins January 9 at San Francisco. Erpelding, in her freshman season last year, was the only player to start in every game in '96-97. She was also the team's second leading scorer and WCC's leading freshman scorer (10.3 ppg). The two other seniors on this year's squad are guard Pat Sencion and center Justine Tuhakaraina. Sencion was a pleasant surprise for the Toreros last year, entering the starting lineup for the final 12 games of the year and averaging 4.7
Susie Erpelding led all wee freshman scorers last season and ranked 13th overall in the wee. points per game. Sencion battled knee injuries through her first three seasons at USO. Tuhakaraina ranked second on the team in blocks and played in 23 games. Bouncing back to rejoin the starting lineup this year will be junior Kari Ambrose, who was injured with stress fractures in both legs last year. Ambrose led the team at the point guard position two seasons ago and averaged 9.3 points and 3.2 assists per game. Another junior, forward Maggie Dixon has only missed one game over the past two years and averaged 3.4 points and 2.7 rebounds per game last season. Three sophomores who saw plenty of action last year are Amanda Bishop, LaKia Alexander, and Jessica Gray. Gray was the
only other player to play in all 27 games and was the team's third leading rebounder (4.9 rpg). Alexander missed just two games in her freshman season and scored in all but three games. Bishop entered the starting lineup last year after the injury to Ambrose and was one of the team's floor leaders. She ranked second on the team in free throw percentage (73%) and assists (43). The Toreros lost six from last year's squad, but Coach Marpe feels she has two gems to step in immediately. Freshmen Jamie Lucia and Jennifer Tuiolosega should see plenty of action in their first years at USO. Tuiolosega was the Los Angeles Times-Orange County Player of the Year last season playing for Ocean View High and also selected to the Orange County Register's All County Team. Tuiolosega aver– aged 20.2 points (ranking her fifth in the county) and 4.5 assists per game while guiding Ocean View to a league title for the fourth straight year. Lucia led Roseburg High in scoring (12.0 ppg), rebounding (10.0 rpg) and blocks (2.0 bpg) during her junior year. She was an All Southern Oregon Confernce selection for two years as well, but is bouncing back from a stress fracture in her ankle suffered during her senior campaign. Marpe will look for her 200th win at the school and 300th win overall this season as the Toreros embark on another tough schedule. USO has 12 non-conference games including road games against Long Beach State, UCLA, and Denver. The Toreros home schedule includes their home opener versus Toledo (Nov. 21) as well as hosting Fairfield, San Jose State, Cal State Fullerton, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and Lehigh. The Toereos open (Jan. 9) and close (Feb. 21) conference play with San Francisco and face three teams back-to-back (Portland - Jan. 17 &22, LMU - Jan. 31 & Feb. 6, St. Mary's - Feb. 11 & Feb. 14). The West Coast Conference Tournament returns to

Head Coach KathyMarpe -18th Season
Kathy Marpe realizes basketball is a game of adjustments. As she embarks on her 18th season at USO and 25th season overall, Marpe continues to redefine her approach to the game. "As a coach, you have to let the players play because they are so much more talented than in the past. It used to be whenever our teams were on the break we would look to setup for the jump shot or power layup inside. Now the key is to be less controlling, to let the players create shots for themselves. " A veteran of the coaching profession for over two decades, Marpe has made changes to the Torero program to utilize the team's speed and athleticism. The past few seasons USO has found success by playing a full-court game which has strengthened their defensive effort. This season, Marpe will imple– ment a more balanced attack that combines the team's shooting ability from the outside with their strength from the inside.
The WCC's "Dean"
As the "dean" ofWest Coast Conference coaches, Marpe knows the league better than anyone. Marpe is the active leader in victories with 198 at USO and ranks third amongst conference coaches in WCC wins. In 1993, Marpe was voted WCC Co-Coach of the Year by her peers after leading the Toreros to the WCC Postseason Tournament title and their only NCAA Tournament appearance. In 11 WCC seasons, Marpe has produced 12 All-WCC per– formers, 12 WCC All-Academic selections and has placed four players on the WCC All-Freshman teams. Prior To San Diego Prior to arriving at USO, Marpe directed the University of New Mexico to seven seasons of success on and off the court. The Lobos were 51-30 in Marpe's last three seasons, having posted wins over two nationally-ranked teams in the same season. Playing in "The Pit", the UNM women drew over 1,000 a game with crowds reaching the 2,000-3,000 mark on occasion - attendance figures unheard of in the mid-70s. By the time she left the Albu– querque campus, Marpe had led the Lobos to consecutive finishes in the AP Top 20 and six AIAW Regional appearances in seven years.

Marpe broke into the coaching ranks at Spring Lake (MN) High School in 1971 after earning a Bachelor's degree in Physical Education at the University of Min- nesota that same year. The Minnesota native strongly emphasizes comrnu- nity involvement and has stressed it to every team she has ever coached. Marpe feels that "It is very important to remember who you are and where you come from, and also to give back to the people around you or to Marpe also has served as a voting member of the AP Top 20 Poll, the Kodak All-American selection board and the Western Regional seeding committee. In 1990, she was a member of the gold medal-winning East coach- ing staff at the U.S. Olympic Festival. Kathy's family is also involved in the program. Her father, Roland, serves as the team's administrative as- sistant while her mother, Genevieve, assists in the bas- those who aren't as fortunate."

Cheryl Getz ~tCoach
Cincinnati, 1982 (6th season) Cheryl Getz enters her sixth season as chief assistant to USD Head Coach Kathy Marpe. Getz previously served as head coach at Eastern Michigan University for five seasons (1987- 91) prior to her arrival at Alcala Park. Getz's numerous coaching assignments have taken her to all parts of the country. After two seasons as a graduate assistant at Central Michigan, she became the assistant at the University of Dayton (1984-86) before moving on to George Washington University (1986-87) . A native of Cleveland, Getz earned Cum Laude honors at the University of Cincinnati, where she received a Bachelor's degree in Physcial Education in 1982. Getz was team captain for two seasons with the Lady Bearcats basketball team. She currently is working on her doctorate in Educational Leadership at USD. San Diego State, 1996 (2nd season) Lakeysha Wright enters her second season as a member of the USD coaching staff. Wright joined the program after a five-year run with San Diego State; four years as a player and one as a student assistant coach. Wright played with the Aztecs from 1991-95 and made a substantial impact. During her four year career, she helped lead SDSU to three NCAA Tournament appearances and back-to-back WAC titles. The Aztecs had a 87-31 record during her career. Wright ranks fourth all-time in San Diego State history in assists (358) and ninth in steals (153). She was named to the Western Athletic Conference All Defensive Team in 1995 and was an All-WAC Honorable Mention selection that same year. Also during her senior year she dished out 165 assists, a total that ranks seventh on the Aztecs' all-time single season assist chart. Roland (Rollie) Marpe Administrative Assistant
(11th season) Roland Marpe is in his eleventh season with the USD program. For four seasons (1987-91) "Rollie" served as a volunteer assistant coach to his daughter Kathy. Marpe joined the Toreros' staff upon retirement from his automotive sales business, which he operated for 35 years in his native Minnesota. Prior to opening his Ford dealership, Rollie was a two-sport athlete at Louisiana Tech as part of the Navy's V- 12 program. He served as a reserve center on the 1944-45 Bulldog basketball team that competed in the NAIA Tournament in Kansas City, MO and also played end on the Tech football team. He has been married to his wife, Genevieve, for 51 years.
