Celebrating our learners’ achievements The School of Oncology

Representatives from our external course providers Damar Training and Total People attended the event, alongside managers and mentoring assessors who came to support their staff members’ achievements. In total, 48 staff members completed a work-based learning programme since the last event in December 2016. This includes, but is not limited to, The Christie Care Certificate, adult apprenticeship qualifications, medical terminology, Chartered Management Institute programmes and NVQs. At the event, the winner of the Learner of the Year Award was announced. This year, 17 nominations were received, covering 12 staff members. The award went to Adrian Ellison, The School of Oncology held its work-based learning celebration event in June.

Adrian was nominated for his Christie Care Certificate achievement by Patricia Kelly, clinical skills training manager in the School of Oncology, and also Sarah Welby and Zoe Gale from radiotherapy, where Adrian was working at the time. Patricia Kelly said: “Adrian embraced the direction, advice, support and guidance from the programme lead and his mentoring assessors and worked extremely hard to achieve all twenty one standards, and attended all the relevant training sessions

Introduction to Julia Owen, head of workforce education and development

The School of Oncology is delighted to welcome Julia Owen to the post of head of workforce education and development. Julia joined The Christie in April 2018. Previously she held the position of education lead for a large NHS community care provider, which involved corporate responsibility for mandatory training and education for all professional groups. She is a registered nurse, has been

a midwife and is a specialist community public health practitioner/health visitor and non-medical prescriber. She has obtained degrees in health studies and public health, a postgraduate diploma in professional education – on NMC register as a practice teacher/lecturer and a masters in education. Julia is passionate about education and believes that it underpins the quality of patient care. Her particular interests are in leadership, human factors and support of staff through clinical supervision, mentoring and coaching. Julia particularly looks forward to working with colleagues in maintaining and enriching The Christie tradition of excellence in education and development.
