PRESIDENT’S WELCOME

In the Guinness PRO12, the Ulster team are now up to fifth in the table with a game in hand. Following the excellent bonus point victories over Edinburgh and Glasgow, the team made it three bonus point wins in a row with a victory over Zebre in Italy last weekend. This good run of form must continue if the Ulster team are to secure a top four finish and a play-off spot. Last weekend also saw Tommy Bowe gain his 150th Ulster Cap – a tremendous achievement for this great Monaghan player! The Ireland team are to be congratulated on their hard fought win over France in what was an extremely physical game last weekend. Indeed, it was a good weekend for all the Ireland teams with the U20s and Women’s sides all securing wins over France. Next up is Wales and we wish all three teams well in their matches. On the domestic front, the RiverRock Towns Cup has reached the semi- final stage where Enniskillen will play Armagh 2nds and Clogher Valley will play either Carrick or Ballynahinch 2nds. The McCrea Cup is also at the semi-final stage where Cooke will play CIYMS and Malone 2nds will play Queen’s 2nds. In the Danske Bank Schools’ Cup, RBAI are through to their third final in a row after defeating Ballymena Academy in the semi-finals. In the Final, they will meet old rivals Methody who defeated BRA in the other semi-final. In the Danske Bank Medallion Shield Final, Friends' School will meet The Royal School Armagh. Congratulations to all four sides on getting through to these show piece finals. On a sadder note, Ulster Rugby was sorry to hear of the passing of Gary Wilson who was a loyal Ulster supporter and Season Ticket Holder. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends at this difficult time. Finally, our supporters have been really getting behind the team in recent matches, which has been a great source of inspiration for the team – let’s keep it going tonight! I hope everyone enjoys the game as well as the great facilities we have here at Kingspan Stadium and remember - “Stand Up For The Ulstermen.” John McKibbin President IRFU (Ulster Branch) It gives me great pleasure as President of the IRFU Ulster Branch to welcome everyone to Kingspan Stadium for today’s round 17 match in the Guinness PRO12 Championship. In particular, I am very pleased to welcome the Treviso team along with their officials and supporters. PRESIDENT’S WELCOME

Managing Director, PRO12 Rugby Welcome

Unpredictability is what sport is all about and just when it looked like Munster Rugby were in full control at the top of the Championship table, along came Scarlets to Thomond Park to grab a remarkable victory. That result in Thomond Park last Friday reset the current order in the Guinness PRO12 and tightened up the competition for the Semi-Finals, not to mention the top six and the Champions Cup play-off positions. Fifth-placed Ulster Rugby have a match in hand and by the time they’re level on games played the gap between first and fifth could be just eight points! There were also key wins for Leinster Rugby, Ospreys Rugby, Cardiff Blues and Connacht Rugby in Round 16 and with only six weekends of action left every team is fighting for any match points they can get their hands on. Of course, the pinnacle for all of our clubs is to reach the Guinness PRO12 Final which will be held in Dublin on May 27 and if that game lives up to the action we’ve seen so far this season, then it’s going to be a classic. Attacking play has long been the hallmark of the Guinness PRO12 but this year it’s gone on to such a new level that we’re in danger of burning out our scoreboards. Last weekend Glasgow Warriors’ Peter Murchie was responsible for try number 500 and by the time the final whistle had been blown on Round 16 we stood at 503 tries. That is a staggering total and one that took us until Round 20 to achieve last season. What it means is that in every Guinness PRO12 match you’re likely to see at least five tries and 43 points scored, which is as good a reason as any to watch the action in person. That attacking intent has been backed up by a positive approach by our teams. Out of the 4049 points scored so far only 18 per cent have come from penalties which indicates that our clubs are more interested in kicking to the corner than pointing to the posts. Our fans certainly seem to be enjoying it, too, because we’ve seen a significant rise in attendances this season with over three quarters of a million supporters coming through the gates in the first 16 Rounds. This weekend Scarlets will return to Irish soil to take on Leinster in a bid to see if they can repeat their heroics of Thomond Park – that’s just one of the eight remaining Championship games between the top six this season. Beyond that there is still a fierce contest to claim those precious Champions Cup places whether by automatic qualification or through one of the two play-off berths. The competition to claim the Championship title ramping up with intensity every week but you still have time to guarantee your place at the Guinness PRO12 Final at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium on May 27. It promises to be an unmissable event and prices start at just €35. Ticket sales have been incredibly strong so far and you can avoid missing out by logging onto www.ticketmaster.ie to get yours. Enjoy the game, Martin Anayi

TOMMY BOWE LOOKS BACK ON 150 CAPS FOR ULSTER

Tommy Bowe celebrated his 150th cap with a 17-40 win over Zebre on Sunday:

Since Tommy’s debut the Province has experienced a huge amount of change… “So much has changed at Ulster and in rugby in general from my first cap but at the end of the day, the craic, the hard work that goes in behind the scenes and the camaraderie is still the same as when I started and I think that’s what makes this game so special. The surroundings of course are a lot more modern now, the support has increased, the use of sports science, technology and video analysis is integral and players are getting bigger and faster and stronger but at the end of the day it’s 15 people on a pitch and it’s still a great sport steeped in tradition.” There is plenty more to come from the Monaghan man as he aims

“It was brilliant to continue the momentum that we had gathered in the two weeks leading up to last weekend in Parma,” he says. “To go over there and get maximum points and keep us in the hunt towards the end of the season was great. I was delighted to reach 150 caps, it seems like a long time ago since it was my first cap, but it’s great to reach that milestone.” It was 13 years ago that Bowe made his senior debut and he remembers it well: “My first cap was in April 2004 against Connacht, I remember running out onto the pitch behind Andy Ward, who was captain at the time and the hairs standing up on the back of my neck. Jonny Bell put me in for a try that day, so it’s one game that will stay with me for a long time.” Having racked up 59 tries and 295 points, the fan-favourite has had many outstanding moments for the men in white: “I have a lot of amazing memories in an Ulster jersey and I hope that many more great memories are to come, but the top 3 at the minute would have to be: » » Beating Toulouse 38-0 at home in 2015 » » When David Humphreys kicked a drop goal against Ospreys to win the league in 2006 » » Most recently, beating Clermont at home in December was a great day, the supporters were amazing and we played some great rugby” Along with the many ups that his 150 cap career has seen to date, there has been one significant disappointment: “The toughest game I have played in has to be in the 2013 PRO12 Final against Leinster at the RDS, it was Johann’s last game. We had gone so well that season and to lose that game was really disappointing, especially when we were the better team on the day. To come away with nothing was heart-breaking.”

TOMMY BOWE

to catch up with Ulster’s most-capped player Roger Wilson, and his eyes are firmly set on silverware:

“My goal this season is to keep pushing for a place in the team, and for everyone in the squad it’s just pushing on to win the PRO12. We are not going to shy away from that, it’s something we are all focused on - the team, the supporters, the management - we are all pushing hard to go on and win the Championship. “The pursuit of that goal continues this weekend, it’s essential that we get maximum points, meaning all games between now and the end of the season are must-wins. It’s a great way to be, we certainly have the squad to do it and we are all excited by the challenge.”

RBAI AND METHODY SET FOR SCHOOLS’ CUP SHOWDOWN

The Royal Belfast Academical Institution and Methodist College Belfast will meet in the 2017 Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup Final, following semi-final wins over Ballymena Academy and Belfast Royal Academy respectively earlier this week. ROYAL BELFAST ACADEMICAL INSTITUTION 41-8 BALLYMENA ACADEMY

The Royal Belfast Academical Institution continued their hunt for three Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup titles in a row, with an emphatic 41-8 victory over Ballymena Academy at Kingspan Stadium on Monday afternoon. Ballymena Academy started the game in bright fashion and took the game to their Belfast opponents, forcing them back inside their 22 with some powerful drives. However, it was RBAI who opened the scoring on 9 minutes when an Academy attack broke down and winger Zak Davidson picked up possession before sprinting in from 60 metres. Ballymena responded brightly, again forcing their way deep into opposition territory but the RBAI defence held firm, thwarting several drives for the line before eventually forcing Ballymena into touch. RBAI got their second try on 20 minutes after some good work brought them up to the Ballymena 22. The Ballymena defence temporarily stood up with some huge tackles, but a well worked scrum move released RBAI winger Niall Armstrong who darted over. James Hume knocked over the conversion to make it 12-0. Shortly before the interval Ballymena scuppered a great scoring opportunity, when a quick lineout opened up the RBAI defence. With the defence scrambling, the ball was spread from right to left but was knocked forward on the final pass with the try line beckoning. RBAI got off to a flying start in the second half with a try from their very first attack; Armstrong squeezing over in the left corner for his second try just ninety seconds after the restart. Ballymena’s endeavour was eventually rewarded on 40 minutes when out-half Bruce Houston slotted over a penalty from 25 metres. On 44 minutes, RBAI touched down again when flanker David McCann broke through before releasing number 8 Yasser Omar to finish it off. Five minutes later RBAI captain Michael Lowry got in on the act with a superb individual effort. The out-half jinked his way past a couple of would-be defenders in midfield before running in from half-way. Full back Joseph Finnegan had now assumed place-kicking

the left following good initial breaks by Stewart Moore and Alexander Clarke. Armstrong completed his hat-trick on 61 minutes when some excellent fast hands released the winger who had the easy task of dotting down under the posts. Finnegan nudged the simplest of conversions to extend the lead to 36-8. While the result was beyond doubt, RBAI remained relentless in attack and several phases of pressure opened space for prop Callum Reid to bustle over form close range with just seconds remaining to seal the win for the reigning champions.

On Tuesday afternoon, also at Kingspan Stadium, Methody got their semi-final off to a dream start when centre James McConnell burst through before releasing his midfield partner Paul Kerr who fended off the last defender to slide over inside the left corner flag after just 3 minutes. BRA responded on 11 minutes through a penalty from captain Conor McAuley. On 15 minutes Kerr got his and his team’s second try of the game when he was on hand to finish off a break by full back Connor Scollan. Kerr added the conversion himself plus a penalty four minutes later to make it 15-3. BRA began to enjoy several phases of possession inside the opposition 22 and opted for quick taps on two occasions as they sought out their first try, but were forced into touch. On 26 minutes Methody were penalised under the pressure of the BRA attack and McAuley knocked over the resulting goal kick. Two minutes later Methody celebrated another try as a well worked play off a 22m scrum released McConnell to score under the posts. Kerr added the elementary conversion to extend the lead to 22-6. On the half-hour mark McAuley gratefully accepted another simple penalty as the Methody defence was penalised at the breakdown inside their own 22, having initially forced the turnover, leaving the score 22-9 at the interval. Methody got the first try of the second half through Johnny Jordan following great work by number 8 Thomas Gallagher who broke off the narrow side of a ruck before off-loading to the scrum-half. BRA did touch down for their first try on 49 minutes when several phases of heavy carries were eventually rewarded when lock Bradley Luney barged over to reduce the deficit to 27-14. On 62 minutes Gallagher pounced to touch down another Methody try, making the most of a mix-up in the BRA defence as they tried to exit from a lineout ball close to their own try line.

Kerr completed his hat-trick on 68 minutes with a fantastic line through the middle before beating the defensive cover to touch down in the left corner. While the result was beyond doubt, BRA flanker Matthew Dalton capped off a fine individual performance with a consolation try as the clock edged towards 70 minutes . DAVID BUSBY DISCUSSES...

Senior debut on Sunday – what was that like?

games as they can, so the competition brings out the best in players. As a young player, what’s it like to play alongside the likes of Charles Piutau and Tommy Bowe? I used to watch Tommy on TV when I was kid, so playing alongside him is surreal at times. Playing with Charles is brilliant, as he makes everyone else's job a lot easier by some of things he can do on the pitch. Also, JP has been great to play with as his rugby knowledge is second to none. It’s great that the coaches also have faith in us young guys - they mix the more experienced players, with players coming through the ranks. Which shows that if your putting in the work and producing good performances you will be rewarded with a chance. What are your goals for the rest of this season? Keep working hard and trying to put my hand up for selection. Also from a team point of view, our goal is to push on and win the PRO12.

It was a dream come true for me, I have been waiting a long time to be given a chance and I’m really glad it came on Sunday in Parma. At the time, I was just happy to get on the field, then luckily I got the bounce of the ball off a great kick from JP (Jared Payne) and was able to get the try, which was an added bonus. How do you feel you have progressed this season? I feel that I have progressed well, it's been great training with the seniors full time, I am trying to learn as much as I can from them. I feel that playing with the Ulster A team has really helped my progression especially as we have secured a British & Irish Cup quarter-final and we’ve had some strong performances as a team. There is fierce competition in the squad, does that motivate you? Yes definitely, everyone wants to be on the match day 23 come Friday nights and play as many

Votes are being counted, candidates hoping for success, but there’s still some way to go before a winner can be firmly revealed. PLAYING TO THE MAXIMUM

Yes, the chase for the Guinness PRO12 title is well-and-truly ‘on’, some expected challengers have dropped off the radar, others – many of them familiar – are navigating the demands of the Six Nations to keep their hopes alive. Ulster, for so long the leading side, finds itself in a position where it must hunt down the teams at the moment in pole position for a place in the play-offs. Recent results have been very satisfactory, players have responded to the task of claiming a top four place by the end of the regular season when current table-toppers Leinster visit Kingspan Stadium on Saturday, 6th May. That fixture could have even more at stake than is commonplace when these two fierce, historic Irish rivals meet. But in the coming weeks, just how important that game will be to Ulster will be decided by its performances and results against others, and tonight’s encounter in Belfast is one which might appear less formidable but it is certainly no less critical to any trophy aspirations. The trio of games in a fortnight against Italy’s best continues tonight with the visit of Treviso, and for understandable reasons supporters believe that given the ‘maximums’ registered against Edinburgh and Glasgow, and again away to Zebre on Sunday last, there is the prospect of edging closer to the Top Four in the PRO12 Championship with another try-bonus win. The immediate target of the coaches and the players will be a win and four crucial points, but such is the fierce competition for play-off places in May they all realise that only a sound forward platform can release a free-scoring backline to pluck those precious ‘extras’! Last weekend Les Kiss, Ulster’s Director of Rugby, described the 40-17 win in Parma against Zebre as ‘mission accomplished’, and he was admirably candid about the frustrating nature of the team’s performance despite, ultimately, registering six tries. A great start, with Ruan Pienaar and Tommy Bowe to the fore in Chris Henry’s very early touchdown promised much, and when Pienaar scored shortly after it did augur well for an Ulster display of ruthless, attacking consistency.

Kiss said there were ‘some choice’ words in the dressing room at the interval in Italy with the bottom-of-the-table opposition just four points adrift, and certainly there was a sharper edge to individual and collective application in the second period. Against Treviso this evening the players and staff know that the errors and poor decision-making at times in Parma will be more robustly punished. The visitors to Kingspan will hope to have some of their internationals released by Italy coach Conor O’Shea to strengthen a team which has invariably posed Ulster some problems in PRO12 history. Seven of the Italian squad was in the Italy panel on duty at Twickenham last weekend, and it’s unlikely that classy backs such as Tomasso Allen and Luke McLean, and influential forwards like Marco Fuser will be in Belfast, but the home side will have looked at Treviso’s defeat at home to Connacht in some detail, and will have identified some of the areas which – particularly early on - gave the men from the West real problems. The fans on the terraces and in the seats at Kingspan will surely be in good voice after three consecutive games yielding 15 league points and the pursuit of Leinster, Ospreys, Munster and the Scarlets - perhaps the surprise packets of this year’s campaign – demands another big return this evening. The focus will be solely on getting the desired result but everyone knows that a swift return encounter is in prospect against Zebre next weekend here in Belfast. The leading sides, those occupying the four play- off spots currently, are setting a hot pace, but the fixture list for the next month or so pitches all of them against each other, and Ulster must be in a position to capitalise – and be in the sort of form and determined to come out on top when sides like Leinster come calling, and when the games in Swansea, Limerick and Cardiff arrive. One of the very definite ‘plusses’ of the trip to Parma was the sight of Jared Payne returning to the team, and his impact was almost instant, that calm authority and eye for space and the right pass or kick producing an important try to settle a wobbly Ulster psyche.

ARTICLE BY ROD NAWN FREELANCE JOURNALIST AND SPORTS ENTHUSIAST @RODNAWN1

David Busby marked his debut with a try against Zebre, and after overcoming a lot of injuries it was due reward for a player who has come through the Academy and has always been earmarked for a fine future in the game. Jacob Stockdale’s try-scoring run continued, and he’s now an established member of the squad. A view of Ulster’s future has to be encouraged by the youngsters developing here. That generation has a part to play, especially during the Six Nations period, but it challenges the experienced to hone their skills and mental approach for what is a demanding three months. Treviso could derail all Ulster’s ambitions if its renowned Kiwi Head Coach Kieran Crowley harnesses his remaining troops as he would intend, but though renowned as attack-minded – wingers David Odiete and Andrea Buondonno and full-back David Sperandio crossed for tries against Connacht five days ago – the Italian club has conceded heavily far too frequently. It’s not being disrespectful to believe that Ulster’s scrum – if it ‘ups’ its game from last weekend – and the array of talented and imaginative players behind will be just too powerful and dominant to allow the Treviso side to flourish. Ulster is ‘cashing in’ at the moment, and though also weakened by international calls it couldn’t claim that Glasgow, Edinburgh, Zebre and Treviso have been less diluted, so it’s absolutely key that the right psychological mood is retained for the next week, and then again when the league resumes at the end of the month at Rodney Parade where the Dragons have too often sunk Ulster’s hopes below the waterline. When that game comes around, expect and insist that Ulster be in the frame of mind, and armed with the tools, to wipe recent history aside and add further momentum to the charge towards a play-off place in May. With a full complement from which Les Kiss and Head Coach Neil Doak can select for the last group of four PRO12 games, everyone must be strong and positive in every way. While taking each game on its own merits the commitment

to realising the potential of this squad, and of offering genuine reward to fans whose loyalty has been spectacular and who only fitfully have expressed frustration, must be complete and thoroughly professional. But this evening, what is needed is a decisive win, a clear mandate for the players, management and supporters to pursue and realise a vision for Ulster which rewards all. Now there’s a rugby slogan to which we can all rally!
