Engelberg Abbey and Grafenort manor

The value of loyalty

Engelberg’s Ta l Museum is located in the Wappenhaus (a farm- house built in 1786/87) and gives v isitors a fascinating glimpse into the ever yday life of v illagers in the late 18th centur y. Home shrines and devotiona l images bear witness to the inf luence of Catholicism on loca l cu lture, while basic kitchen uten- sils, blankets stuf fed with fa llen leaves, and nailed clogs give a sense of the hard-working, modest lives led by the v illagers in those bygone days. The permanent exhibition “Von Berg- und anderen Ku lissen” (Mountains and other backdrops) is dedicated to Engelberg’s luxur y hotels, taking a look at their out- ward appearance and inner work- ings, and high lighting the role they played in the histor y of Engelberg. A longside the Ta l Museum’s historica l liv ing spaces is a modern annexe that hosts temporar y exhi- bitions. This year’s summer exhibi- tion is dedicated to Lucerne ar tist Marie-Theres Amici. Her drawings and pastels created especia lly for the exhibition feature Engelberg mountain landscapes a longside images of the Got thard region and of her one-month stay on the Swed- ish island of Öland in autumn 2013. Opening hours: Wednes- day to Sunday, 2 to 6 p.m.

The Benedic tine abbey in Engelberg was founded in 1120 by monks f rom Muri Abbey and f unded by Conrad von Sellenbüren.
