1:12 Judah was afflicted by Sennacherib, king of Assyria, in 701 BC (II Ki 18:13-37). 1:15 The term “ good tidings ” has a twofold meaning: 1. It means the destruction of Nineveh (the enemy of God and His people) would be “good tidings” 2. It means the future destruction of Satan (the enemy of God and His people), via the “ GOOD TIDINGS ” of CHRIST (Mt 16:18), which would be “ good tidings. ” 2:6 By 612 BC, Babylon had breached the river gates that led into the city of Nineveh. This caused a sudden rise in the Tigris River, which washed away part of the walls. Then, the newly formed Babylonian empire walked into the city of Nineveh and destroyed it. So complete was Nineveh’s destruction at the hands of Babylon that her identity would remain hidden under rubble for 2,454 years (from 612 BC – AD 1842). 2:11 Lions were used as symbols throughout Assyria. However, this “lion” (Assyria) was about to be captured.
