NAHUM 3:4

NAHUM 3:19

1412

4 Because of the multitude of the whore- doms of the wellfavoured harlot, the mis- tress of witchcrafts, that selleth nations through her whoredoms, and families through her witchcrafts. 5 Behold, I am against thee, saith the LORD OF HOSTS ; 1 and I will discover thy skirts upon thy face, and I will shew the nations thy nakedness, and the king- doms thy shame. P 6 1 And I will cast abominable filth upon thee, and make thee vile, and will set thee as a gazingstock. P 7 1 And it shall come to pass, that all they that look upon thee shall flee from thee, and say, Nineveh is laid waste: who will bemoan her? whence shall I seek comfort- ers for thee? P 8 Art thou better than populous 2 No, that was situate among the rivers, that had the waters round about it, whose rampart was the sea, and her wall was from the sea? 9 3 Ethiopia and 4 Egypt were her strength, and it was infinite; 5 Put and 6 Lubim were thy helpers. 10 Yet was 2 she carried away, she went into captivity: her young children also were dashed in pieces at the top of all the streets: and they cast lots for her honourable men, and all her great men were bound in chains. 11 1 Thou also shalt be drunken: thou shalt be hid, thou also shalt seek strength because of the enemy. P 12 1 All thy strong holds shall be like fig trees with the firstripe figs: if they be shak- en, they shall even fall into the mouth of the eater. P 13 Behold, thy people in the midst of thee are women: 1 the gates of thy land shall be set wide open unto thine enemies: the fire shall devour thy 7 bars. P 14 1 Draw theewaters for the siege, 8 fortify thy strong holds: go into clay, and tread the morter, make strong the brickkiln. P 15 1 There shall the fire devour thee; the sword shall cut thee off, it shall eat thee up like the cankerworm: make thyself many as the cankerworm, make thyself many as the locusts. P 16 Thou hast multiplied thy merchants above the stars of heaven: 1 the canker- worm spoileth, and fleeth away. P 17 Thy 9 crowned are as the locusts, and thy captains as the great grasshoppers,

which camp in the hedges in the cold day, 1 but when the sun ariseth they flee away, and their place is not known where they are. P 18 Thy 10 shepherds slumber, O 11 king of Assyria: 1 thy nobles shall dwell in the dust: thy people is scattered upon the moun- tains, and no man gathereth them. P 19 1 There is no healing of thy bruise; thy wound is grievous: all that hear the bruit of thee shall clap the hands over thee: for upon whom hath not thy 12 wickedness passed continually? P

3:12 Two historical “ strong holds ” can be identified (with certainty) within the book of Nahum : 1. No (Thebes), which fell to Ashurbanipal (king of Assyria) in 663 BC (vs 8-10) 2. Babylon (Assyria’s strong holds), which fell to Nabopolassar (Prince of Persia) in 625 BC. Because of these two references, most theologians agree that the book of Nahum has a date sometime between 663 and 625 BC.
