Tallahassee has more than 78 miles of canopy roads

The old Capitol of Florida

When you think of a true southern city, Tallahassee probably doesn’t come to mind. However, Florida’s capital city will have you thinking differently by the time you leave. Kickstart your visit by getting into the southern spirit with a visit to Mission San Luis, a reconstructed Apalachee-Spanish living history museum and the only reconstructed 17th-century community in the southeast. There are plenty of hands-on activities, including archery, archaeology site tours and historical presentations. Tallahassee is also the place to take in the full beauty of the southern cities. Drive down Centerville Road and get lost in the breathtaking canopy of trees that surround you — one of eight stunning canopy roads that cover more than 78 miles. Alternatively, you can take in the sights on foot in the historic neighborhoods between Call Street and

College Avenue. The moss-covered trees, ancient cemeteries and historic homes, including the famous Civil War–era Knott House Museum, make this area truly special. If you’d like to see more greenery still, head to the Alfred B Maclay Gardens State Park, which has various nature trails that are perfect for seeing the tropical flora and fauna — there are hundreds of camelias and azaleas. Blooming season is from January to April, with the floral peak in late March. Being the capital city of Florida, Tallahassee is also naturally home to the impressive Museum of Florida History. This state-themed museum opened in 1977 and houses artifacts and exhibits that tell the story of Florida’s vast history. Also be sure to check out the permanent exhibitions covering World War II and Florida in the Civil War.
