Welcome Time is a valuable commodity, both in terms of how we spend it and how we track it. Head to our deftly curated list of 2018’s Top 50 Watches on p75 for time well spent. Our resident watch expert, Roberta Naas, has carefully selected the crème de la crème of the horological world and categorized them into distinct sections such as astronomy, chronograph, minute repeaters and ultra-thins. We are very excited to introduce a dedicated Style section this issue, where we will explore the latest trends, highlight stylish destinations and what its equally stylish travelers pack, as well as the best watches and jewelry on earth. Also making its debut is our ladies’ watch page, where we will showcase howmarques respond to the growing number of women watch collectors. Whether it’s releasing a grand complication (sadly, still few and far between for women), launching a caliber in a ladies-only timepiece, creating new gemstone-setting methods or introducing a brand’s first-ever women’s watch, we are excited to see how the industry evolves. And our commitment to strong, original photography continues with our cover story, shot on location in New York City, and the addition of a regular accessories shoot. In our Influence section, Ian Callum, the doyen of car design, talks about the future and how electric and autonomous vehicles are the next big thing. We also hear from the man responsible for some of the world’s most recent record-breaking watch auctions, Aurel Bacs, and why he thinks watch collecting is undergoing something of a renaissance. For those looking to get away this fall, we’ve found the best suites in Paris, sourced exceptional yachts you don’t have to wait years to get your hands on, and compiled destination guides to Montreal, Mexico City, Basel, Vietnam and Vienna. We round off this edition with some stargazing, both from the serene seas of the Indian Ocean, and for the more intrepid among you — 200 miles above the planet. As always, if you want to comment on anything in this issue, drop us a line at editorial@elitetraveler.com

MILLION AIR

Take off Welcome aboard and welcome to the world of Million Air! The winter season is fast approaching, and the holidays will soon be upon us. During this time of reflecting on the great gifts we have, and for the people we are especially thankful for, I would like to personally thank all of our front-line ladies and gentlemen. These are hardworking and dedicated people, whose importance is often overlooked as we rush through the FBO. Not only are they central to every flight’s safety, but these fine folks are always on stage, as they understand the vital role they play as an extension to your personal and corporate reputation. Hospitality organizations, like Million Air, are different from traditional manufacturing organizations in many ways. For starters, the people "manufacturing" a service experience are not hidden away in an authorized-access-only factory floor. They are on stage at all times while they are producing first impressions, greeting (and at times entertaining) guests, transferring luggage and valet parking vehicles. Employees in the hospitality industry, like those in most service industries, not only have to be capable of producing the service experience; they must do so while guests and customers are watching everything live as it is happening. Your travel experience and that of your guests is greatly enhanced or detracted by the attitude and style in which we greet your aircraft. Delivering an experience is much more complicated than merely training employees to do their jobs, it also requires having good interpersonal and problem- solving skills. The hospitality product cannot be packaged and put on a shelf for purchase. It is ever changing and defined anew in the mind of each traveler every time an experience is created. Traditional organizations rely on policies and procedures to ensure proper command and control of the employees producing the products. True hospitality organizations must substitute culture and empowerment for command and control, as there is no way to anticipate and plan for every conceivable desire and requirement that each unique guest will bring to the hospitality experience. Thus, benchmark hospitality organizations spend considerable time and money teaching a culture value system so that when a guest wants something that isn't discussed in the training manuals or can't be done by the book, the employee will know how to respond to that guest, will want to do the right thing and will be empowered by the organization to create the best possible experience. It is even more impressive when you add moving aircraft, rolling fuel stock, high value assets and the most distinguished audience in the world. We wish your travels to be fun, and we hope all your business endeavors are successful.

Keep ’em flying…

Tallahassee has more than 78 miles of canopy roads

The old Capitol of Florida

When you think of a true southern city, Tallahassee probably doesn’t come to mind. However, Florida’s capital city will have you thinking differently by the time you leave. Kickstart your visit by getting into the southern spirit with a visit to Mission San Luis, a reconstructed Apalachee-Spanish living history museum and the only reconstructed 17th-century community in the southeast. There are plenty of hands-on activities, including archery, archaeology site tours and historical presentations. Tallahassee is also the place to take in the full beauty of the southern cities. Drive down Centerville Road and get lost in the breathtaking canopy of trees that surround you — one of eight stunning canopy roads that cover more than 78 miles. Alternatively, you can take in the sights on foot in the historic neighborhoods between Call Street and

College Avenue. The moss-covered trees, ancient cemeteries and historic homes, including the famous Civil War–era Knott House Museum, make this area truly special. If you’d like to see more greenery still, head to the Alfred B Maclay Gardens State Park, which has various nature trails that are perfect for seeing the tropical flora and fauna — there are hundreds of camelias and azaleas. Blooming season is from January to April, with the floral peak in late March. Being the capital city of Florida, Tallahassee is also naturally home to the impressive Museum of Florida History. This state-themed museum opened in 1977 and houses artifacts and exhibits that tell the story of Florida’s vast history. Also be sure to check out the permanent exhibitions covering World War II and Florida in the Civil War.

Diamond Suite at Hotel Duval

WHERE TO EAT Head to Cypress Restaurant, where fresh Mediterranean cuisine meets sophisticated Southern American fare. Tallahassee natives David and Elizabeth Gwynn own this popular restaurant featuring fresh seafood and local produce. The brunch menu contains classics, including steak and eggs, while the dinner menu is packed with creative culinary fusions. Try the grilled yellowfin tuna with plantain and chorizo hash, tropical fruit salsa and tiger sauce. There is also an impressively long cheese menu and nightly happy hour. 320 East Tennessee Street, Tallahassee +1 850 513 1100 cypressrestaurant.com WHERE TO FLY A full-service, state-of-the-art FBO, Million Air Tallahassee, will provide guests with various amenities and services. Enjoy a game of pool before takeoff or hold your business meeting in the ramp-side conference room that can be catered upon request. A private bathroom and shower are available, as are Mercedes crew cars.

ASTONISHING AUTOMATON

In time for its 280th anniversary, famed Swiss watch brand Jaquet Droz presented its unique Signing Machine, a project four years in the making. Signing machines, though unusual to come by, date back to the age of Thomas Jefferson, and have been used by prestigious figures and heads of state to remotely sign important bills, documents and letters. Jaquet Droz’s latest creation harks back to the illustrious talent of founder Pierre Jaquet-Droz, whose passion was designing watches and automata — mechanical devices set to follow predetermined instructions that imitate movements of a human being. Taking inspiration from Jaquet-Droz’s famous automata from the 18th century — the Writer, the Musician and the Draughtsman, now housed at the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire in his hometown of Neuchâtel, Switzerland — the Signing Machine has been updated and perfected to carry out consistent signatures, personal messages in any language, or sketches in one fluid motion. Made of 585 parts, the mechanism is wound by a lever on its side before springing into action, and must be reset after two signatures. Ensuring no one can access the magic of your machine and forge your signature, a four-digit security code is required before use. The complex device is made entirely by hand, including the programming of the signature and optional decorative elements, such as hand-engraving atop the stainless-steel case. Housed in smartphone-sized portable casing, the useful automaton is designed to travel with you across the globe wherever business — or leisure — takes you. One thing’s for certain, the Signing Machine will become a revered part of your collection for years to come. From $367,500, available at Tourbillon Boutique in San Francisco. HITCHED LIVING

Explore with complete freedom and flexibility; no pilot, predetermined destination or schedule is necessary. A new era of customized, purpose- built travel trailers from Living Vehicle, Airstream and Land Ark allow you to traverse the world with the luxuries of home and on your own terms

Land Ark Drake

In an effort to truly challenge the trailer marketplace, Land Ark’s Drake is more high-concept home than recreational vehicle. Named after English sea captain Sir Francis Drake, the roughly 350-sq-ft RVIA- certified 30-ft abode includes two loft spaces — one suitable for a king-size mattress, the other a queen — as well as a flex room that functions as a closet, bedroom, sitting room or storage area. The trapezoidal exterior sacrifices aerodynamics for aesthetic; its corrugated black metal siding with 14 dual-pane windows is striking. The interior is filled with white-washed pine walls and ceiling, as well as a 10-cu-ft stainless-steel refrigerator/freezer, LP gas cooktop with cast-iron top grates and full 30 x 60 inch Kohler bathtub/shower. Drake lacks a traditional RV feeling, a welcome respite from the increasingly popular #vanlife trend. Co-creators and owners Joni and Brian Buzarde opted out of traditional mobile plumbing; the good news, no RV toilet paper and truly luxurious fixtures. The bad: it’s impossible to dry camp as there are no black or gray water tanks. “Consider Drake to be a nicely equipped modern house built to RV specs,” says Brian Buzarde, who added a septic tank and set of solar panels to his Drake, which currently resides off-grid in Marble, Colorado. At 13,000 lbs, Drake is on the heavy side and would need a dedicated tow vehicle, and there’s a four-month window from order to delivery. From $139,900, landarkrv.com

Escape the limitations of a crowded hotel and get lost in the backcountry, all while maintaining the option to respond to emails with an omnidirectional Wi-Fi antenna. Create uninterrupted views of mountain ranges or desertscapes away from paved roads, with the convenience of a washer/dryer. The brainchild of Santa Barbara–based architect Matthew Hofmann, who left his firm to renovate vintage Airstreams (he’s updated more than 400) and design his own mobile space, Living Vehicle furnishes the possibility for well-appointed on- and off-grid dwelling. Four 150-watt roof-installed solar panels, a 100-gallon freshwater tank and two 30-gallon propane tanks power the nearly 8,000-lb rig. Whether you’re using it for long-distance travel or weekend escapes, Living Vehicle comfortably sleeps six adults thanks to its EuroLoft in-ceiling bed, U-shaped dining area that converts into a queen space and separate bedroom that can double as a sitting room, should the sofa sleeper option prevail. With a duo of deck options in the form of a three-foot clamshell or a six-foot extended patio, seamless indoor/outdoor living is encouraged. Hofmann has already delivered two dozen units and is manufacturing just as many orders. From purchase to delivery typically takes two months. Peak Americana meets European minimalism in the Globetrotter, Airstream’s newest premium travel trailer. Globally recognized as experts in the segment, the longest-tenured recreational-vehicle manufacturer in North America partnered with UK-based Astheimer Limited, fusing the iconic riveted-aluminum profile with contemporary aesthetics not typically found on the beloved silver bullet. AirstreamGlobetrotter

Handcrafted Italian cabinetry as well as Franke, Grohe andMoen finishes and fixtures add a layer of sophistication. Panoramic windows, a curved headboard with a Tuft & Needle adaptive mattress, radius slim-fit doors and low-profile backlighting style the space that blends Airstream’s utilitarian elements with refined sensibilities. Adventure seekers have equated Airstreamwith the great outdoors for more than a half-century, but this collaboration marks a step for the brand into an intentional lifestyle that surpasses mere practicality. While it can easily adapt to on- or off-grid residing, the 28-ft trailer features a 1,000-watt pure sine inverter, separate shower and optional 50-amp A/C unit with heat pump. Weighing in at just over 6,000 lbs, the Globetrotter is one of the lightest in its class, meaning most SUVs can handle the tow. From$99,000, airstream.com

TAKE THREE/// ULTIMATE TOW VEHICLES Cadillac’s Escalade, Lincoln’s Navigator and GMC’s Sierra 2500 Denali HD combine brawn and luxury, capable of towing your new digs to even the most remote locales

CADILLAC ESCALADE ESV PLATINUM At its core, Cadillac calls Escalade an SUV with the capacities of a full-size truck. Its new 10-speed automatic transmission with a 7.39 gear ratio spread apportions the engine to run at a lower rpm on the highway, adjusting shift points in a manner similar to the tow/haul mode. The result is greater fuel mileage, as well as a smoother, more precise gear-shift quality. Coupled with the 6.2-liter V8 VVT with direct injection, Escalade tenders a trailering rating of 8,100 lbs. Triple-sealed doors keep exterior noises out while the Bose Centerpoint Audio System supplies 16 surround-sound speakers, including five custom-tuned speakers across the instrument panel and front doors. From $93,795, cadillac.com

LINCOLN BLACK LABEL NAVIGATOR Although its max towing capacity of 8,700 lbs is quite impressive, the Black Label Navigator enters opulent territory with its Pro Trailer Backup Assist technology — a program that uses radar and cameras to steer the vehicle to self-park in reverse while the driver controls the braking. It’s possible to program information for several trailers into its memory system. The pre-installed trailer brake controller provides a precise module that allows for time-delayed and, if need be, automatic emergency braking. A twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 and seating for eight, including a 24-way multi-contour set of front seats with power thigh extender, ensure each

GMC SIERRA 2500 DENALI HD Trailering with intent, the GMC Sierra 2500 Denali HD offers a range of specifications to maximize heavy-duty hauling. The Duramax 6.6-liter turbo diesel V8 engine delivers acute power with both a 2WD and 4WD option, as well as a fifth wheel/gooseneck towing alternative. Therefore, the max trailering can range from 13,000 to 14,800lbs. Keenly focused on hauling, the Sierra’s hitching options include heated, power-adjustable mirrors with LED rear guidance lamps that are integrated into each mirror, enhancing trailer visibility when backing up. elite traveler SEPT/OCT 2018 30 Yachts by Thea Halstead

Amore Mio has an incredible top cruising speed of 30 knots, this is equivalent to over 34 miles per hour

ULTIMATE VELOCITY

Sports yachts pack serious punch. They’re built with performance and speed inmind, and are ideal for those looking to zip around the Riviera or Caribbean— fast. But if you’re torn between a super-speedy vessel and a larger yacht on which you can host parties, entertain your friends and family and spend a fewweeks of the year on board, which do you prioritize? This is where a builder like Heesen steps in. It creates high-performance yachts that can reach incredible speeds, but in the size and finish of a luxury superyacht. So, what performance-enhancing design and build elements go into creating something that behaves like a sports yacht, but looks and feels like a superyacht? There are a few options, but they all involve serious tank testing, years of research and development, and a group of yachting-mad engineers with brains that in no way work like mine. Amore Mio , a 147ft yacht built in 2016, is an example of Heesen taking its technological prowess to meet the needs and demands of a particular owner who uses the vessel as part of a larger fleet. Heesen gave Amore Mio her impressive speed credentials (30 knots) by minimizing the internal volume. Unusual for a yacht of this size, she has no third deck, so she is not only lighter but has a more streamlined shape that is aerodynamically perfect to speed around in like a rocket. For some of its larger superyachts, such as 229ft Galactica Super Nova and 180ft Laurentia , Heesen turned to industry experts Van Oossanen Naval Architects who developed a Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF). This FDHF is basically a hull that has been designed and built to cut through the water in the optimumway to reduce drag and anything else that will slow her down. It not only ensures a yacht can move faster, but it also makes the journey smoother and encourages fuel efficiency (a term you don’t often hear in yachting circles). Another innovation that Heesen uses is the Hull Vane. This harnesses waves to produce power. As the yacht moves forward, the water flowing over the wing produces lift and thrust and helps propel her along. So whether you’re after a smaller sports yacht, or something that offers a bit more space, builders like Heesen incorporate advanced technology to ensure that you don’t have to sacrifice speed for comfort. A Mad Hatter’s tea party at 40,000 ft is sure to keep your little ones entertained

Aviation Adventures in the sky by Samantha Coles

Traveling with children can be challenging. They’remost likely hyperexcited about going on a trip and in need of entertainment, whereas you’re looking to relax or catch up on paperwork . Nannies do their best to keep them amused, but options can be limited when you’re 40,000ft in the air. That’s where VistaJet comes in. Last year, the aviation firm reported that one in four flights had a child on board. So, in order to keep children thoroughly entertained, it has launched a whimsical new program called Adventures in the Sky. This collection of themed parties and activities has the assistance of a cabin host who has been trained at the prestigious early-years education and childcare institute Norland College. This specialized training means that all hosts are fully capable of recognizing the needs of traveling families onboard. The cabin host will be joined by an entertainer from the delightful party-planning extraordinaires, Sharky & George, who will host the party itself. Created for passengers aged one to 16 years old, the cabin is transformed for the themed party, creating a memorable interactive experience for first-time fliers and seasoned travelers alike. The party options include Alice in the Sky where children head down the rabbit hole into Alice’s wonderland for aMad Hatter’s tea party, a game of flamingo croquet and a game of Tweedledee and Tweedledum’s

Contrariwise. Budding spies can sign up for the Secret Mission, guided by an in-flight spy chief who recruits secret-service agents with an assignment to solve a worldwide criminal investigation. Agents receive training to decipher code, take fingerprints and learn secret messaging and crime-scene techniques. Young cinephiles can create their own movie from script to screen withMovies in the Sky; a fully equipped film crew helps bring the script to life, or children can act out their favorite film. Whichever program your child chooses, you can be sure the journey will be just as much fun as the destination. vistajet.com

As the holiday season is fast approaching, there’s no better time to invest in a family-friendly jet. Whether you’re flying between states to visit relatives or going on a further-flung vacation, these aircrafts can get you there TAKE TWO/// FAMILY- FRIENDLY JETS

HondaJet Elite At this year’s EBACE in Geneva, HondaJet revealed significant upgrades to its HA-420 Hondajet, just 30 months after the jet was first unveiled. Perfect for short-range flights, the HondaJet Elite has an auxiliary fuel tank, meaning its range has increased by 17 percent, allowing a range of 1,437 nautical miles — the furthest-flying aircraft in its class — but it’s still fuel-efficient and emits fewer greenhouse gases than similarly sized aircrafts. There are also a number of improvements to the cabin: a new engine inlet (for reduced high-frequency noise), a belted lavatory and a small galley with coffee machine. The jet is available in three new color schemes: Monarch Orange, Ruby Red and Ice Blue. From $5.25m, hondajet.com

Gulfstream G500 If you’re heading further afield, the GulfstreamG500 combines incredible speed with significant range — it can travel 4,400 nautical miles at Mach 0.85. With more time in the air, cabin comfort is a necessity. The G500 is large enough to carry 19 passengers and can sleep up to eight, and the 41-ft interior cabin can be designed to your specifications. There’s also ample baggage space with fold-down shelving and space that can be configured for your ski gear, golf clubs or full-to-the-brim suitcases. The interior is pressurized to no more than 4,850ft, even at a maximum altitude of 51,000ft, and 100 percent fresh air is replenished every two minutes, meaning the dreaded effects of jet lag will be lessened so you and your family arrive feeling refreshed.
