This one day course, held at Quorn, is aimed at more experienced Reps (with at least 12 months experience) who are – or who wish to become - involved in negotiating satisfactory outcomes with management for a range of workplace issues from Health & Safety to pay bargaining and arguing the case for union recognition and release time. At the end of this course you will be able to understand the negotiating process and will have had the opportunity to practice and develop your negotiating skills. The specific areas that this course covers are, as follows: • An understanding of a range of collective bargaining issues relevant to the participant’s own workplace and sector

• The ability to recognise a range of appropriate sources of information relevant to the bargaining, negotiation or consultation process • An understanding of where Employment Law supports access to, and use of, information for bargaining, negotiation or consultation • A recognition of different negotiating styles and approaches • The ability to negotiate as part of a team • The ability to recognise the strengths and weaknesses of the union’s negotiating position

Community Organising

Unions do not stand outside society but are located at the heart of civil society. This one day course, held at Quorn, looks at the building of networks and alliances outside traditional structures in order to harness and amplify trade union power behind new social movements and formations. Community Organising is very much learned by doing – so this will be a practical course for trade union activists that covers three basic building blocks:

• Identifying and Developing Leaders through Alliance Building • Identifying Community Organising Issues • Community Organising Campaigns – and analysis of their power & potential

Workplace Organising

This two day course, held at Quorn, is intended for union Reps and activists interested in actively campaigning in order to grow and strengthen their union. There will be a component of peer led, group assessment and, by the end of the course, the participant will aim to have produced their own Workplace Organising Plan to serve as a guide to action upon their return to work. The course content includes consideration of, and engagement with:

• Industrial and Political Context • Workplace Mapping • Collective Organising

• Building the Union – asking workers to join • Getting Help – asking workers to get active • Workplace Communications • Planning Organisation
