Women in the Trade Union Movement

Days: 1

Date: 30 April - 1 May 2019

Location: Quorn Grange Hotel

From the Match Women and the Suffragettes, to the Dagenham strikers and the Women Against Pit Closures; Women have always been central to trade unions and the fight for a better world. Indeed, Trade Unions fight for equality for 3 million women, every single day. However, while the gender pay gap has narrowed, women still earn an average of 18% less than men. At the same time, and contrary to media stereotyping, union membership among women is now higher than it is for men. Indeed, the ‘average profile’ of a British trade unionist is of a 40 year- old, degree educated, professional woman. This two day course, held at Quorn, and aimed at experienced Reps, Equalities specialists, and branch activists, will include discussion of:

• The roots of the struggle for recognition and equality • Discrimination against older women, mothers, single- parents & the vulnerable • Modern day Gendered occupational segregation • Organising women in part-time and insecure work • Physician heal thyself? The lack of senior women in the Labour Movement • Encouraging participation

• Women’s committees and representation • Women as the agents of union revitalisation
