Find the GFTU course for you The GFTU offers a range of courses, from foundation level skills (in Maths & English) to practical training for union Reps; right the way up to the equivalent of degree (Level 4) and post-graduate (Level 7) options. Some of the courses (those run in conjunction with Leeds Beckett & Newman University) are externally validated and carry formal course credits, some do not. All delegates who successfully complete a course will receive a GFTU certificate suitable for framing. In order to help you find the right course for you, this brochure is colour coded. Yellow tabs denote Foundation Skills: These are entry level (1-3) standard, which seek to communicate essential knowledge and skills, which are geared towards practical outcomes and the ability to apply that learning in everyday situations. These courses are not geared towards specific occupations or industrial sectors. Red tabs denote Developing Skills: These are geared towards Levels 1-3 (roughly GCSE – A Level / Apprenticeship / NVQ equivalent) and concentrate upon conveying a good understanding of the subject to hand; and the ability to gain and apply a range of skills, knowledge and understanding of ideas, processes or themes at a detailed level. This section is aimed particularly designed for the skilling of Reps to be able to organise and represent trade union members in the workplace. Green tabs denote Advanced Skills: Geared towards the equivalent of Levels 4-7 of national qualifications (and equating to Higher Apprenticeship & NVQ levels to degree and graduate level, and postgraduate study). These are aimed towards experienced Reps, trade union officials and managers and provide the opportunity for professional development, the communication of high level knowledge in the fields of work and study, and the framework for the development of original and critical thinking.

Access to Learning Everyone has a right to learning. ‘Disability’ only becomes a problem when learners have to face inaccessible courses, classrooms and institutions. GFTU’s focus is, wherever possible, to remove barriers to education; this includes the ongoing development of inclusive teaching and learning strategies. This includes access to teaching rooms and Quorn Grange Hotel facilities, specific accommodation designated car parking spaces; the production of course materials in specific formats (Braille / large print / coloured papers & overlays); assistive technologies; and the modification or adaption of equipment (hand held, illuminated magnifiers etc) and the provision of hearing induction loops.
