April 1 1983: We opened Danny’s Speed Shop in 1983. 400 square foot retail space with a small machine shop area in the back. Who is Danny? Well funny thing is, there is no Danny. There never was, just the 2 founders Ron and Tom. Danny was a nickname for both of us, kind of a inside joke. We hated the name from the beginning, but learned how to make it work.

1986: Danny’s Speed Shop was incorporated under the new name, D.S.S. Inc., otherwise known as D.S.S. Racing. We outgrew our first shop and moved to 7011 W Belmont Avenue in Chicago. We never thought we would fill up 5,000 square feet. Having room for 3 of our race cars in the front window of our store was nice. Better yet we had about 3,000 square feet of shop!

We started D.S.S. Racing with $3,500 and no fear of hard work. From there we have grown into a state-of-the-art manufacturing company with customers worldwide. Founders (pictures from left to right):

1990: After renting for the first seven years, it was time to buy our own building. We needed space to expand our manufacturing business and operate our new Pro Stock Racing operation. Pictured is the retail portion of our new 5,000 square foot building in Lombard, Illinois.

1991: Ford Boss Pro Stock Engine in our assembly room just prior to our Lombard location’s Grand Opening open house. Our race engine building and racing experience is what makes us who we are. The experience we gained is invaluable and has inspired and enhanced our products immensely.

FX pistons feature the patented X Groove Skirt design, which reduces damage caused by fuel wash down and break-in debris for superior skirt, cylinder and ring life. Thinner ring grooves maximize ring land width and reduce radial groove depth which drastically improves the strength of the piston in the vulnerable ring land area. Advanced ring land features improve the effectiveness of modern piston ring technology. Low volume top land contact reduction grooves, second land pressure accumulator groove, third land oil accumulator, skirt top oil accumulator which works in conjunction with the drain backs and X Groove. Record Setting Performance all season long! The Patented “X Groove” is a standard feature on our FX and Custom XR series pistons. Engine builders have worked for decades to optimize ring seal. Improved ring seal means more power and efficiency. Fuel wash down and break-in debris have always been the enemy of ring seal. D.S.S. Racing developed and patented the “X Groove” system to reduce the effects caused by fuel wash down and wear debris. The X-shaped groove sweeps excess fuel and foreign matter into the oil drain-back holes on the down-stroke and into the side relief on the up-stroke. This sweeping effect keeps the debris from getting trapped between the piston skirt and the cylinder wall, where it would normally cause scoring damage. With exotic fuels, blowers, turbos, and NOS running at today’s power levels, ultra richmixtures are required and commonplace. The X Groove’s sweeping action combats the damaging effects of these applications. Groove

“We tore down my shop car’s motor, the pistons, rods and crank are MINT. You’d never think it has 6 seasons of abuse at 1000+ H.P. How does the “X Groove“ work?

On the down stroke, excess fuel wash down and debris are swept into the “X Groove” and exit through the oil drain- back holes, keeping the protective oil film intact on the skirts and cylinders.
