EDITORIAL

Welcome to the 2014 edition of the United Counties League Review – the thirty first edition of a series which started back in 1984, and the third to appear on line.

The 2013-14 campaign was another interesting one, although all three championship contests ended with emphatic successes for the eventual titleholders.

In the Premier Division ambitious Spalding United won their first seventeen games to set a hot pace, and ended up twelve points clear of a Huntingdon side playing only its second top flight season. The Tulips’ reward is a return to the Evo Stik Northern Premier League after three years with us, and they look geared to enjoy further success at the higher level. Few would bet against them repeating the exploits of fellow recent promotees St Neots and Kings Lynn by making it back to back promotions. In Division One a much changed Oadby Town side bounced back from a near miss in their debut campaign to carry off the championship in fine style, their prolific goalscoring feats making them the highest scoring club in the national league system. They also set a points record in the league’s 119 year history, and fell just short of the goalscoring high. Eynesbury also made amends for their narrow failure to step up twelve months earlier by taking up the runners-up medals this time round, and Harrowby also secured promotion in only their second season. Huntingdon were the cup team of the year, winning the League Knockout Cup in one of the most thrilling finals in the competition’s history. They also carried off the Hinchingbrooke Cup and enjoyed their best ever run in the FA Vase. On the national stage Wisbech shone with a run to the FA Vase quarter finals where they were narrowly beaten by eventual winners Sholing, while AFC Rushden & Diamonds had another good Vase run as well as enjoying a memorable debut season in the FA Cup before bowing out at Conference South Dover. At reserve level the season was dominated by Cogenhoe and Peterborough Northern Star. The Cooks eventually retained the Reserve Division title while Star took the Reserve Knockout Cup. Both successful managers have moved on to first team posts and their progress in Division One will be monitored with interest. After a couple of seasons with a high level of club movement the league has experienced a greater degree of stability this summer with just one club in and one out. Joining us are East Midlands Counties League champions Thurnby Nirvana who become our fourth Leicestershire club. We welcome them to our competition. While changes have been few this summer the Football Association will continue to monitor league boundaries and step six is likely to be an area of focus during 2014-15. With this in mind it is important that member clubs obtain the necessary ground grading to maintain their status and the last year has seen a number of clubs carrying out facility improvements to that end. The 2014-15 campaign sees the launch of a new under 21 division, comprising a mix of clubs whose first teams play in the league, higher level clubs and educational establishments. It will be interesting to monitor the progress of this new venture. A further innovation for the new season is the first UCL groundhop, which will run alongside a similar event for the Peterborough League in the opening weekend of August. It is hoped that will prove a success and will run on a regular basis in seasons ahead until all clubs have participated.

We’ll be back in the summer of 2015 to cover the events of the 2014-15 campaign. Have a good season!

LEAGUE REVIEW

PREMIER DIVISION: EMPHATIC SUCCESS FOR SPALDING

After narrowly missing out on promotion in 2012-13 Spalding boss Pat Rayment assembled a powerful looking squad of proven higher level players and the Tulips went on to justify the favourites tag with an emphatic title victory. Spalding won their first seventeen matches, including a sequence of nine clean sheets between August and October, leaving the rest of the title aspirants in their slipstream. Early on Deeping looked their main threat, bouncing back from an opening day defeat by AFC Rushden & Diamonds to go fifteen games unbeaten and plundering goals galore. Cogenhoe also started well while Huntingdon again performed well with the promotion of Seb Hayes to the hot seat after Ricky Marheineke’s move to Histon proving seamless. AFC Rushden & Diamonds were left playing catch up after early season cup successes, but when they ended Spalding’s winning start with a 2-1 Halley Stewart Field victory on 14 th December it looked like the race might open up. Diamonds lost their next match at Boston though and when Spalding saw off Deeping on Boxing Day they realistically had one hand on the title. Injury ruled out the prolific Andy Tidswell early in the new year but the goals were shared around by Spalding who went unbeaten until the championship was theirs. The title was confirmed on 25 th March when only possible challengers Huntingdon were beaten 2-1 at Cogenhoe. Spalding did lose to Huntingdon home and away in April, two results which helped the Cromwellians secure second place ahead of Diamonds who were left to rue five home losses at the Dog & Duck. The division’s second highest scorers Deeping pipped Cogenhoe to fourth place on goal difference. Newly promoted Sileby lost all their title winning team and manager Glenn Botterill in pre-season with replacement boss Scott Goodwin putting together a very young side for the start of the season, while Harborough again struggled after their great escape the year before. Goodwin’s previous club Long Buckby also had to start again with a programme of rebuilding under Phil Mason while Boston Town were surprise early season strugglers and Newport Pagnell also had a tough campaign after losing several of their squad to higher grade football over the close season. Managerial changes were the order of the day for several of these clubs, and in some cases the changes worked the oracle. Incoming chief Nathan Collins steered Boston Town away from danger, and it was a similar story at Sileby where Daren Young brought in much needed experience to secure a second top flight campaign for the club. Stewarts & Lloyds handed Kevin Byrne a first managerial chance but after his departure at Christmas a side light on firepower lost several key players and a youthful squad failed to win in the remainder of the season, eventually finishing ten points adrift at the foot of the table. Long Buckby had seemed out of danger until docked six points for fielding a player under suspension, and with their fixtures well advanced they faced a nervous finish to the season. Gradually they were overhauled by Newport and Sileby leaving the second relegation place between Buckby and Harborough, who made progress following the early season arrival of Rob Dunion and Gordon Kyle at Bowdens Park Eight points from their last five matches saw the Bees move out of the bottom two, thanks to a 3-2 last match success at Sleaford. With the division short on numbers Buckby were handed a reprieve though and maintain their ever present membership of the Premier Division.. The battle to avoid the drop was rather more open than events at the top of the table with a third of the division involved in the relegation scrap.

DIVISION ONE: RECORD BREAKING SEASON FOR OADBY

After narrowly missing out on promotion in their first season of UCL football, Oadby bounced back with a record breaking campaign earning them promotion to step 5 while claiming a host of new bests along the way.

Eynesbury, who had also played their part in an enthralling 2012-13 title race, also booked a promotion place twelve months on with Harrowby also getting the nod to step up after a third place finish in only their second season back in the league. The Poachers took over top place early in September and were never headed again. They started the season with a 17 match unbeaten run, and after losing under the Burton Park floodlights in November, went through their remaining 24 matches without defeat. Their goal tally of 159 was the highest across the country in the National League system and just one shy of a league record, while their points total of 109 set a new high for any division of the league. Oadby’s blend of youth and experience made them a class apart in the section and they clinched the title with four games to spare, Jack Lane’s goal of the season contender at Northampton Spencer giving them the vital three points on 8 th April. The Poachers then went on to complete the season with the only unbeaten home record in the division and an eleven point margin of triumph. Rovers had the better of the two meetings of the pair with a home draw and away win, but as the season reached the business end there was little between the two. At the end of March Harrowby held a ten point advantage from four matches more, but the season’s final month saw Eynesbury make light of a heavy fixture programme to win all nine remaining games and overhaul their rivals for promotion. Northampton Spencer had a busy end of season after again suffering a host of mid season postponements, but nonetheless secured a top four finish with near neighbours ON Chenecks also enjoying a good campaign to finish sixth. Three new clubs were making their bow in the league, and they enjoyed varying degrees of success. Lutterworth Athletic, transferred from the East Midlands Counties League, made a bright start with ten wins in their first twelve matches, but were unable to match the consistency of the top three, falling away to finish a very creditable fifth in the table. St Neots Saints also started well and earned plenty of plaudits for the quality of their football, but a 42 match campaign proved a little too testing for their youngsters and they ended the season ninth after failing to win in their last eight outings. The runners-up place was contested by Eynesbury and Harrowby with neither out of the top three from September apart from a four day spell in November when St Neots Saints slipped above the Arrows.

Peterborough Sports were unbeaten in their first four matches, but as the season progressed they struggled for consistency and ended the campaign in a disappointing 16 th position.

Woodford, forced to seek demotion on the eve of the season due to illness which forced their manager to quit, had another campaign to forget. Personnel changes in the dugout and on the pitch hardly helped and their only highlight was a 2-1 success at Blackstones in their thirteenth match which brought them their only points of the season. The battle to avoid the second re-election place involved Lincolnshire neighbours Blackstones and Bourne, with Bugbrooke also battling for survival. Both Stones and the Badgers finished the season well leaving the Wakes ten points adrift in 21 st place.

RESERVE DIVISION: COGENHOE RETAIN CROWN

With reserve team numbers continuing to fall for the 2013-14 campaign, all the remaining teams were brought into a single reserve section for the first time since 1983.

The change presented clubs with a much heavier programme of games, while the Reserve Supplementary Cup competition was consigned to the history books.

The format change proved popular with clubs, despite a mid season spell of bad weather which created a busy end of season period for all.

The season soon developed into a two horse race for the title, with Colin Cooper’s reigning Reserve Division One kings Cogenhoe going up against a new look Peterborough Northern Star side under the management of new boss Raff Mazzarella. Cogenhoe had kept their squad together and sent out an early warning to would be contenders, starting the season with an 8-0 demolition of Desborough and following up with a 7-3 win at Olney. The goals slowed after that, but the champions extended their winning run to six games before dropping their first points in a home draw with Oadby.

The Leicestershire club had won Reserve Division Two in their first season in the league, and the early weeks of the new season saw them emerge as challengers with a twelve match unbeaten start which yielded 32 points.

Star lost at home to Eynesbury early in September, but were otherwise unbeaten when they first crossed swords with the tabletopping Cooks on 19 th October. Goals from Joe Moore-Papworth and Josh Sanders gave Star a 2-1 victory, and Oadby’s unbeaten run had ended two days earlier when Stewarts & Lloyds won 2-1 at Freeways Park.

It didn’t take long for a three team contest to become two as the Poachers picked up a mere two points from a five match sequence without a win in October and November to slip out of contention.

Cogenhoe’s response to their defeat at Chestnut Avenue was a run of eleven straight wins through the winter months. Star more than matched that, despite a couple of cup runs which could have proved a distraction, extending their own victory sequence to seventeen games by the beginning of March. Cogenhoe’s home draw with Chenecks on 1 st March looked to have handed Star the momentum, but eight days in March proved decisive as the Peterborough side lost to Bugbrooke and drew with both Stewarts & Lloyds and Olney. Cogenhoe made no such mistakes as the season approached its finale and they wrapped up the title with a 2-1 home win over Star on 12 th April, goals from Callum Beech and Colin Cooper avenging the Cooks’ only reverse of the season.

The Cooks went on to create a new points record in reserve football of 105.

A distance behind the top two Eynesbury came through to take third place, aided by a six point deduction imposed on Oadby for fielding a suspended player.

Raunds finished at the foot of the division after two managerial changes in the first half of the season. A month’s break in mid season enabled them to regroup and complete their fixtures, seven points adrift of newcomers Long Buckby who themselves were ten points below Olney.
