M EDICAL E XAMINATION G UIDELINES

If the district decides to require an applicant to pass a medical examination, the following rules should be followed:

1) Medical exams must be job related and consistent with business necessity, narrowly tailored, and uniformly applied. In addition, for pre-employment/ drug/alcohol tests, a “special need” must justify the test.;

2) Medical exams must follow a conditional offer of employment and be conducted prior to the commencement of work;

3) All entering employees in the same job classification must be subject to the same inquiry;

4) The results must be kept confidential;

5) The examining doctor must be provided with a copy of the job description; and

6) The district should require the examining doctor to notify the district of all tasks the employee cannot perform without undue risk of harm to self or others.
