Bishop Blesses Statue on Historic Site

The thrilling story 8an Uiego' s birth was retold in Serra park on Pre- sidio hill Sunday afternoon when His Excellency, Bishop Charles Francis Buddy blessed a statue of Padre Junipero Serra. , Bishop Buddy stands before the mi- crophone near the statue. To the left of the bishop is seated the Rt. Rev. Msgr. John M. Hegarty, pastor of St. Joseph's Cathedral. By his side is Anton May- rhofer, oldest parishioner of the Cathedral parish. At the extreme right of the statue is Percy Broell, park superintendent and master of ceremonies. The Serra statue, done by Arthur Putnam, was one of the three historical figures completed by the sculptor before his death.

'Inspired Work' "Let us not forget that the estab- lishment of civilization along the California coast was not the work of a cool, calculating business man, but, rather, that of the inspired Franciscan, Father Serra who would let nothi1:g stand in his 'way," Fath- er Tunbms said. "Wonderful men 1i k e Father Serra come into the world, do their work and pass on. Other heroes come to take their place. Many men pay lip service to the great who have gone on, but few, indeed, are the men of today who will pause to do more m honor of the glorious d~ad than to speak in wordy eulo- gies. And an eternal debt of grati- tude is owed to the men who erect monuments and build parks to honor those who have done great things for humankind. ."This i_ntrepid apostle of Califor- nia, .Jumpero Serra, led a life of service, of unselfish devotion and sacrifice. The faith of Junipero Serra was reworded, and therefore we '.11so shall be rewarded for oµ; services to humanity, and for our steadfast faith in our God " the brown-habited monk concluded.

Simple Ceremony The ceremony was a simple, but colorful one. The brilliant vest- ments of the bishop and the dean the simple black cassocks and whit~ surplices of the altar boys, the black habits and hoods of the votive sis- ters who were present, all bespoke the many facets of the church that was represented by Junipero Serra when he won his fight to have a col- ony established on the site where the group wa.s gathered yesterday afternoon. But a touch of romance was add- ed by the rough brown robes of the Franciscan brothers, the same sort of simple garment that was worn by S~rra, with the same knotted rope girdle about their waists. Roads around the steep hillside on which the park is situated were jammed with the autos of visitors. The Serra statue, done by Arthur P utnam, was one of three historical figures completed by that sculptor before his death.

STATUE OF SERRA RECONSECRATED BY BISHOP BUDDY "The glory and glamour of the days that are past," were some of the words used to describe the heri- tage_ left to San Diego by Father Jumpero Serra, when one of the I rntrepid missionary's own order of ~t. Francis, Fathe_r Turibius, super- ior of the Franciscan seminary at Santa Barbara, preached the dedica- tory sermon at the reconstruction of the Serra statue yesterday after- noon by the Most Rev. Charles Francis Buddy, bishop of the Roman Catholic diocese of San Diego. The statue had just been re- moved to a new location at the head of an earthen amphitheater that wa~ the location of Father Serra's first chapel in California Attending the bishop was the V~ry Rev._Msgr. John M. Hegarty, Vicar Foram, dean of St. Joseph's cathe- dral. T~e Federal Music Project 1iVPA choir, under direction of Charles Marsh. sang sacred hymns; George W. Marston spoke; Percy C. Broell, Serra park superintendent, was mas- ter of ceremonies.
