Source: ACEA; BEV – Battery electric vehicle An important component monitored for newly registered cars is the division by powertrain. e pressure on electromobility, and the e orts of car companies to avoid heavy nes for non-compliance with emission limits (more on this issue in sub chapter: Regulation and support for electro-mobility in the EU), the number of newly registered electric vehicles, where the term electric vehicle is used to refer to pure electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), has also come to the fore. Hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) are also included, but these are only registered in single units per year in the EU, so they are virtually not re ected in the statistics. e focus is therefore on pure electric passenger cars, which although the number of newly registered passenger cars has been increasing quite rapidly in recent years, sales remain below expectations. In 2023, 1,539 thousand pure electric cars were newly registered in the EU (a year-on-year increase of 37%), with the highest absolute sales in Germany (524 thousand), France (298 thousand) and the Netherlands (114 thousand). At the time this study was prepared, data was only available for the rst eight months of 2024 for new passenger car registrations. In the rst eight months of 2024, the number of new car registrations in the EU increased by only 1.4%, with slight decreases in France (0.5%) and Germany (0.3%), for example. In August 2024, pure electric cars accounted for 14.4% of the total car market in the EU, compared to 21% in the same period in 2023, representing the fourth consecutive monthly decrease (against an increasing trend in 2023). Registrations of plug-in hybrids also recorded a signi cant drop of 22.3%, while the combined share of petrol and diesel cars fell slightly to 44.3% compared to 45.1% last year.
