Source: data ACEA If 2023 was a relatively successful year for new registrations of pure electric cars, plug-in hybrids, on the other hand, saw a 7% year-on-year drop in demand. e main contributor to this was the drop in demand in Germany (sales halved compared to 2022), also due to the cessation of state support for the purchase of these cars. Support for EV purchases in Germany since 2016 Since 2 July 2016, Germany has introduced (at the Bundesamt für Wirtschaft und Ausfuhrkontrolle (BAFA), the so-called „Umweltbonus“ (eco-bonus) a nancial support programme for the purchase of electric vehicles. Pure electric cars could receive a subsidy of €4,000 and plug-in hybrids € 3,000. Half of the cost was covered by the federal government, the other half by the manufacturers. e aim was to encourage a shift towards more sustainable transport. During the COVID-19 pandemic, support for all vehicles (pure electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, and fuel cell vehicles) registered as of June 4, 2020, signi cantly increased as part of the economic stimulus (there was an increase in cost recovery from the federal government compared to the previous support). For electric cars, the subsidy was up to € 9,000, while plug-in hybrids were entitled to € 6,750 (for electric cars up to € 40,000 list price – above this threshold, the subsidies were lower, € 7,500 for pure electric cars and € 5,625 for plug-in hybrids), leading to a signi cant increase in vehicle registrations. As of 1 January 2023, the nancing of electric vehicles was again signi cantly adjusted and reduced. e focus has been on pure electric vehicles, which contribute more to climate protection. Support for plug-in hybrids has thus been completely
