2.2.1 New passenger car registrations by brand in the EU Despite the problems and challenges associated with the coronavirus crisis, the Volkswagen Group has maintained its market leadership in new passenger car registrations. With sales of around a quarter of all new vehicles in the region in 2023, equivalent to more than 2.5 million passenger cars, the Volkswagen Group has consolidated its position as the largest player in the European automotive market. e Volkswagen Group has held the top spot for a long time, with a one- fth share of new registrations in the EU in 2006. Second place was taken by Stellantis (which was formed by the merger of the former PSA Group with the Fiat carmaker) with an 18% market share. e Renault Group came third with 11% share. In 2006, VW was followed by the PSA Group with a 13.3% share, and three groups with a tenth share (Ford, GM and Renault). In addition to economic developments and the above mentioned crises, the exit of the United Kingdom from the European Union (in 2020) has had a major impact on the development of the total number of registered passenger cars in the European Union.
