Fig. 2.12: Market share of electric vehicles (BEVs and plug-in hybrids) in the EU in 2023
Source: ACEA, Eurostat; own calculation Ensuring an adequate infrastructure of charging stations for electric vehicles is put in place is essential for the successful and rapid development of electromobility. Although the network of charging stations in the European Union is gradually expanding, only a few Member States have adequate facilities for EV charging. e Netherlands was the best-placed EU country in this respect as of September 2024, with 102.2 charging stations per 100 km of road. is was followed by Luxembourg with 79.7 stations per 100 km and Germany with 52.5 stations per 100km. At the other end of the ranking are countries where there are on average no more than 3 charging stations for every 100 km of key roads, including motorways, national and municipal roads. ese countries not only have a lower density of charging infrastructure, but also a lower market share of new EVs. is can be attributed mainly to the underdeveloped infrastructure, which negatively a ects the development of electromobility in these countries.
