Fig. 2.14: Share of AC and DC chargers and total number of chargers in the EU as of September 2024

Source: EAFO; charging AC (Alternating Current); charging DC (Direct Current) Internal combustion engine cars still dominate in the EU, and petrol or diesel (depending on the country) is still the main fuel for all registered passenger cars (cars in use). e highest share of petrol cars is in the Netherlands (85% in 2022), followed by Cyprus and Finland with more than 70%. Lithuania and Latvia then have the most diesel cars (66% each). Despite the European Union’s e orts to reduce CO emissions and promote low emission technologies, the share of alternative fuel cars (including LPG, CNG, etc.) in 2023 remains low in most European countries. EU countries where alternative fuel passenger cars (nowadays alternative fuels are seen as a cleaner alternative and thus mainly battery vehicles, but in many countries other fuels such as LPG and CNG are also used) have a signi cant share include Bulgaria (14.3%), Italy (10.3%) and Sweden (10.1%). Among the European rst movers is Norway, where the share of alternatively powered passenger cars is almost one quarter of all passenger cars, almost all of which are battery electric vehicles (99.9%).
