Source: Eurostat; own calculations When calculating the number of vehicles per capita, there are signi cant di erences between EU Member States. On average, there were 572 passenger cars registered in the EU per 1,000 inhabitants in 2023, which corresponds to approximately one car per two people, regardless of age. e highest share of passenger cars per capita in 2023 was in Italy, with 694 vehicles per 1,000 inhabitants, followed by Luxembourg with 686 vehicles and Cyprus with 662 vehicles per 1,000 inhabitants. At the other end of the spectrum were Latvia with 415 passenger cars and Romania with 425 cars per 1,000 inhabitants. An interesting trend is that countries with a relatively low number of cars per capita have recently experienced higher growth rates in new vehicle registrations than countries with a high level of vehicle endowment. is trend is therefore contributing to a gradual reduction in the gap between Member States.
