Fig. 2.17: Total number of registered passenger cars per 1,000 inhabitants in 2023
Source: European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) More than a quarter of a billion passenger cars are already on the roads in the European Union, with the average age of these vehicles already exceeding 12 years by 2022. e average age of registered passenger cars in the European Union is gradually increasing. While it was 8.4 years in 2007, it passed the 10-year mark in 2013 and reached 12.3 years in 2022. ese gures indicate both a slower renewal of the eet and an ageing of the eet, with the average age of vehicles varying considerably between Member States. Luxembourg, which has both the highest number of new registrations per capita and the highest number of passenger cars per 1,000 inhabitants, has the lowest average age of registered passenger cars in the EU in 2022, at 7.9 years. Denmark and Austria follow with an average age of 8.9 years. In general, Western European countries have a lower average age of passenger cars, while the former Eastern Bloc countries and Greece face a higher average age of vehicles. Greece (17.3 years), Estonia (16.6 years) and the Czech Republic (15.9 years) have the highest average age of passenger cars. It is noteworthy that between 2015 and 2022, the average age of passenger cars decreased in ve Member States, namely Latvia, Poland, Romania, Lithuania and Croatia, which may indicate a positive trend of eet renewal in these countries. is decrease is indicative of an increase in the share of new vehicles in some regions, although at the level of the European Union as a whole the overall trend shows an ageing of passenger cars in use.
