USD Football on Sunday morning TV? Never! Yet there we were, 17 point favorites against the Occidental Tigers on nati al CBS television. As a result of the NFL football strike, USD, along with seven other Division III schools, had the unique opportun to perform in front of millions of football-starved fans. Announcer Hank Stram visited the school, andcame away impressed with our affable atmosphere and scenic campus. CBS paid USD $15,000 for the honorof showing the epicstruggle. And what a struggle. The Tigers turned the tables on the T ros, subduing them 34-20. Despite statistical superiority in ne every department, USD's offense neverseemed to getuntracked, while the defense showed a fatal tendence to give up the big play. Undoubtedly, Oxy's home field advantage played a big role in their win.Said Running Back Jerome McAlpin: "It seemed as if they hada million fans there. They put microphonesin front of their stands." McAlpin won the coveted "Barkman Athlete of the Week" award for his 100-yard rushing performance, and Mike Rish accepted for USD the Chevrolet $1000 Sports Scholarship for his usual outstanding pass receptions. It may have taken thirty years, and it may take another thirty years before it happens again, but having the Toreros on television was an unforgetable experience. Ed Garvey, welove you.
