Overcoming the loss of several key personnel, the Toreros anxiously awaited the 1983 season. Returners for Coach John Cunningham included senior catcher Steve Sciacca and senior leftfielder Andre Jacas. At the corners, sophomore Laci Nagy- pal returned at third base while sophomoreEric Bennett started at first base. Up the middle senior second baseman Bruce Tomlinson and sophomore shortstop Paul Van Stone were back to clogup the middle defensively; fifth year man John Mullen was back in rightfield. FreshmanDavid Jacas earned a starting position and was drafted inthe thirteenth round by the New York Mets. This season's success depended on the new pitching crew. Besides returnee Chris Ciampa, CoachCunningham counted on Junior College transfers Mike Fazekas and Russ Applegate. Other returnees were s niors Kevin Cammall and Sophomore Bob Cannady while newcomers to the staff included juniors Ken May and Eric Sweet, sophomore Mark Hawblitzel and freshman Casey Morales and Ed Dauer. Coach Cunningham stated at the startof the season that "we'll have to play sound fundamentals and fight and scratch for everything. As always, we will be competi­ tive in the Southern California Baseball Association." (They sure were)! »
