New life was pumped into the program as Head Coach Rick Russell and his assistant Jim 0 O'Brien actively sought new recruits from within the USD student population. Themajor goals of the season were achieved as USD was represented by a full contingent of runners for each meet of theyear, and injuries were kept to a minimum despite the numerous newcomers to the sport. The highlight of the season was the team's trip to San Francisco for the WCACConference Championships. Peaking at just the right moment, the men climbed out of the c llar to move up two notches to 6th place. Some notable performances this yearwere exhibited by Shawn Delaney in his personal best of 32:48 at theconference meet, where he claimed 4th B lace overall. Rick Strobel's 35:59 on Mission Bay's course, 'ave Goddard's 38:33, and Bob Winter's early season 36:19 10K rounded out the season. Freshmen Andy Smith, Tom Christ, and Joel Chavez all made good progress as well. With a few recruits next year, anda committment to run ning during the ofT-season, this young team shall be running stride forstride withanyone, a force to be reckoned with in the future.
