1983 Alcalá

FRONT ROW L-R: Maire Kelley, Helen Vigil, Ann Wachowiak, Cindy Zack, Colleen Hardy, Ursula Jaehn. BACK ROW L-R: Jim O'Brien, Rachelle Smith, Melanie Smith, DianaKelly, VeronicaOswald, SuzanneKnoth, Rick Russell. This was definitely a transitional year for the USD Women'sCross Country Team. The women, in a gutsy performance of talent, snatcheda 3rd place finish at the ending of the seasonat the St. Mary's Invitational, and each individual runner made tremendous progress over the course of a very short season. Since the WCAC Conference covers an area from San Diego to the state of Washington, travelling to major invitationals was the rule rather than the exception;therefore, the runners, women as well as men, were offered an opportunity to see much of California and Nevada. Highlights of the women's season included Colleen Hardy's best time of 19:51 for the 5K on our home course around Fiesta Island, while both Ellen Hughes and Helen Vigil recorded times of 21:15. Individual talents were displayed by the other members of the team, such as in the performances of Cindy Zack, Diana Kelly, andUrsula Jaehn. With continued dedication to excellence this team came a long way, and the future looks very bright indeed.
