Although the Toreros finished 4-5, they were in every ball game in the fourth quarter,except maybe the Oxy game and the final against St, Mary's. The highlight of the year had to be the Toreros appearance on national TV against Occidental on Sunday, October 3rd. Their biggest victory of the year had to be their convincing24-7 win over Cal Poly Pomona, aDivision II school. Final individual leaders forthe Toreros were Jimmy Smith in rushing (454 yards and5 TD'son 97 carries), Eric Sweet in passing (135 of 248 for 1804 yards and 9 TD's), Michael Rish in receiving (40 catches for 637 yards and 6TD's), Phil Spencer in kick-ofT returns (22.2 avg. on 13returns for 289 yards), Phil Spencer in punt returns (9.5 avg. on 15 returns for 142 yards). Chip Jarvis and Craig Carlyle ininterceptions (3 each) and Bob Loxzi in scoring (54 total points). Special teams did an excellent job all season, especially on punt return coverage as they allowed only 60 yards on 23 returns foran outstanding 2.6 return average. Eight all-time USD records were altered this season with field goal kicker Bob Lozzi in on four of them, andquarterback Eric Sweet inon three. The Toreros ended up averaging 119.9 yards rushing a game while giving up 129.2 yardsa game. In the passing department,USD averaged 211.7 yards a game to their opponents 144.6. The Toreros outscored their opponents on the average of21.6 ppg to 15.3 ppg. "We are alreadylooking forward to the '83 season. Wehad a relatively young club (lose only 10 seniors), and with all the close games we were involved in, Ithink we gained some valuable experience that can only help us next year. The kids we have coming back, as a whole, have good attitudes and are the type that will work out on their own in the off-season. There is no doubt we'llalways have a consistentwinning program year in and year out," stated Coach Bill Williams.
